2 out of 5 eggsBad Experience - Couldn't Set Up

This review is from: D-Link DIR-615 Wireless N300 Router, 4-Port Switch, DD-WRT Open Source support

Pros: Free

Cons: Can't say - couldn't set up.

Other Thoughts: Got as a free ad-on when I upgraded my Cable Modem. Didn't need it, but thought I would eventually install DD-WRT and make into a repeater. The problem: I couldn't pass the initial set up. I won't go into details, but it's not my first D-Link product, or router configuration; I've done this before. Nothing worked. Might be compatibility w/ my equip, but it feels more like shoddy equipment that NewEgg foisted on me. You get what you pay for, and since I didn't pay anything, I can't complain - but what a waste of time and energy. Only thing I ever really complained about w/ NewEgg.

4 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: D-Link DIR-615 Wireless N300 Router, 4-Port Switch, DD-WRT Open Source support

Pros: Works awesome especially when you flash it with DD-WRT. This router has excellent value and is capable of replacing Bell Aliant's actiontec router if you load DD-WRT.

Cons: Ethernet is only 100Mbps and through my testing it only hits about 90Mbps but for the price and features once DD-WRT is loaded that is a minor issue.

4 out of 5 eggsIt gets the job done

This review is from: D-Link DIR-615 Wireless N300 Router, 4-Port Switch, DD-WRT Open Source support

Pros: Cheap
Works
Gets the job done

Cons: Stock firmware is junk, the wifi crashed in under a week, luckily this was the week the DDWRT dev's fixed the crashing wifi bug on the Atheros based chips and released the 23720 build
No usb port
No gigabit lan

Other Thoughts: I threw DD-WRT build #23720 and it has run without a issue for a few months.
My neighbor got this for $15 one day as a shell shocker sale
It was the DIR-615-I1 reversion

I set the wifi to run on the 20 MHz channel width for better range (range > speed)
* running on the 20 MHz channel width limits the speed to 144Mbps which after overhead is about 3MB/s

Some people reported wifi crashing on the 23720 build with a high number if wireless clients so i would not suggest this for a business environment's public WiFi

I have also setup a DIR-615-E3 (not from newegg) with that DDWRT build, too soon to know if it is stable on that but when using dynamic 20/40 and turbo 40 channel width my client old's wireless G laptop could not see the access point. i think that laptop has a Intel 3945ABG card in it, both linux and windows had this issue, only wireless device i had was that laptop so i don't know if it was the router or the laptop that was the issue

2 out of 5 eggsREVIEW UPDATE

This review is from: D-Link DIR-615 Wireless N300 Router, 4-Port Switch, DD-WRT Open Source support

Pros: Good construction, and internal wireless chipset. Cost effective wireless router.

Cons: This is an update to my previous review. I have found that the wireless MAC address filter also filters ALL connections to the 4 port switch. Therefore, if you use a non-wireless network printer, it's MAC address must also be in the MAC address table for it to work with your computer. The MAC filter should only filter WIRELESS connections to the network, and not include everything else connected to the 4 port switch. DD-WRT firmware also fixes this. If you don't use DD-WRT, you need to be aware of this.

Other Thoughts: Similar acrhitecture errors occur in other D-Link wireless routers.

2 out of 5 eggsNEEDS HELP

This review is from: D-Link DIR-615 Wireless N300 Router, 4-Port Switch, DD-WRT Open Source support

Pros: Nice package, DD-WRT support. Low price.

Cons: After putting this router in service, I notice that under moderate thru-put that it appears to reboot on its own. This should not happen. During rebooting, connection is lost for a short period of time. This indicates a firmware problem. I suspect that there is a memory leak in the firmware, even the latest firmware from D-Link. DD-WRT firmware fixes this this issue, and makes the unit very usable.

Other Thoughts: Nice unit for the price, using DD-WRT. Unit needs help with D-Link firmware.

This review is from: D-Link DIR-615 Wireless N300 Router, 4-Port Switch, DD-WRT Open Source support

Pros: Daytime is OK

Cons: Bought it brand new with Total Defense bundle. After about 1-2 months used, I have to switch back to my old router due to disconnection happened every midnight. Tried the old one, it worked fine all the time.

3 out of 5 eggsWeak Signal

This review is from: D-Link DIR-615 Wireless N300 Router, 4-Port Switch, DD-WRT Open Source support

Pros: The D-Link DIR-615 has great firmware and administrability. Easy to set up, affordable, and multifaceted.

Cons: Unfortunately, the wireless signal on this router is weak. I tested this router against two others I had in my possession, both of which were simply b/g signal. I had hoped that the addition of the N signal would improve, not weaken, our wireless signal at home. With the little help of some repeaters everything worked out ok.

Manufacturer Response:

We want to thank you for the feedback as we greatly appreciate the input and we are sorry to hear that you were experiencing weak signal with the product. Please be advised that in order to maximize wireless range, be sure to do the following:

* Keep the number of walls and ceilings between the D-Link router and other network devices to a minimum - each wall or ceiling
can reduce your adapter’s range from 3-90 feet (1-30 meters.) Position your devices so that the number of walls or ceilings is
minimized.
* Building Materials make a difference. A solid metal door or aluminum studs may have a negative effect on range. Try to position
access points, wireless routers, and computers so that the signal passes through drywall or open doorways. Materials and objects such as glass, steel, metal, walls with insulation, water (fish tanks), mirrors, file cabinets, brick, and concrete will degrade your wireless signal.

In addition, make sure you have downloaded and installed the latest firmware from www.support.dlink.com. If your problem persists, feel free to contact us by calling 1-877-453-5465 for further troubleshooting. We thank you for choosing D-Link.
