5 out of 5 eggsUbuntu 11.04

Pros: plug and play in Ubuntu 11.04. Had it configured in less than a minute. Very compact.

Cons: Didn't auto scan my SSID, had to type in manually. Not a big deal.

Doesn't have a built in hinge so to align the antenna (in the body of the device) you WILL NEED to use the little stand or an extension cable and some duct tape.

Other Thoughts: A hinge and rotator would have been nice built into the device. But the for the price I can't complain.

4 out of 5 eggsNot fully hostapd compatible

Pros: Nice little adapter - works well in client mode. Probably works in Windows too, but who cares about that?

Cons: Hostapd does not play well with it - there are some issues with the rt2800usb driver that create race conditions when stations authenticate using WPA, with the result that devices can only connect about 1/20 or so tries. These issues are probably easy to fix (in fact, some light google-ing will turn up a simple patch for the nl80211 driver that probably would resolve this issue), but since I bought it from a local store, it was easier just to return it.

Other Thoughts: I wouldn't discount the rt2800 driver's hostapd compatibility entirely - but for this adapter, it's a no-go.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks

Pros: Works great.

Cons: The range isn't quite as good as what you get with a typical laptop, but it's good enough for me.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great

Pros: I have windows 7 starter, found it and installed without a hitch. Comes with a base, doubt I will ever use it. Picks up my wifi signal without any issues.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: If you have windows 7 it installs painlessly and quickly. I also like the warranty it comes with, its 72 months long.

Pros: Simple and quick to install using Ralink driver from their website...Large download but allows you to install ONLY the driver. Leave their (and Zonet's) application alone and let Windows handle the networking. Don't use the CD from Zonet at all. Cradle is clever but don't need it. EXCELLENT reception and NO drops...better than wireless in my unreliable HP DV6000.

Cons: The Zonet CD is undersized and confounded my DVD burner--got jammed and messed up my door. I had to take it apart to fix it. Would NOT allow me to install ONLY the driver so I did not even try to install it after reading previous reviews.

Other Thoughts: Ordered on a Wednesday and received following Monday...kinda slow but I was REAL happy to finally get it!

3 out of 5 eggsPoor drivers on WinXP

Pros: Good price at less than fifteen. Compact size. There is a WHQL driver for Windows 7 available out on Windows Update, so on Windows 7 installation is painless and wireless zero config (WZC) works properly.

Cons: Zonet's drivers for Windows XP are subpar, as others have noted. They are tightly bound to Zonet's Wifi "management" program which seems intended to replace Windows' wireless zero config (WZC). Unfortunately, like so many other kooky OEM applets, the "management" program is buggy. It fails to connect to ad-hoc networks, it mangles several WPA security parameters, and the "softAP" feature crumps intermittently. I spent a few hours trying to tease the core driver files out of Zonet's installer, with the hope of bypassing Zonet's "management" program, but I gave up. Also, Zonet's driver is not WHQL certified. Bad form. The driver package posted on Zonet's web site as of this writing is a couple years old and no fresher than the drivers included on a CD-ROM in the box. These drivers are so poor I was ready to return the product, but then I discovered...

Other Thoughts: ... the chip inside this dongle is model RT2870 from a company called RaLink. Luckily, RaLink makes good drivers! Zonet is just failing to pass them along to us, the end users. Surf to , find the right chip, and download away. The drivers there were published in December 2009 and purportedly cover Windows 2000, XP 32 and 64, Vista 32 and 64, and Seven 32 and 64. They are WHQL certified and play nicely with Windows' wireless zero config (WZC). The install program has an option to install a driver and management utility, or just a driver. I recommend the latter. Thanks to the RaLink driver I've been enjoying good performance so far. RaLink spared my dongle from an early demise.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: The adapter has a steady connection with a "very good" signal about 30 feet from the router.

Cons: The Windows XP drivers are embedded into the installation file for the Zonet software, but I prefer to have Windows manage my wireless connections. I had it working at one point by uninstalling the software after copying the drivers to a new location, then having Windows redetect the drivers from that location, but later Windows kept telling me that another program was managing the wireless connection. I had to go ahead and use the Zonet software. Like I said, it is more of a personal preference than an actual con, but that is really the only negative I have found.

1 out of 5 eggsNot Happy With This Product

Pros: Great size, easy to fit onto any desk size.

Cons: I'm pretty tech savy, my ethernet card blew out in my desktop. Didn't want to pay Geek Squad to fix it. Changed from broadband to wireless. Need adapter to make work. Device not compatible with Windows XP, the package doesn't say it is either. Microsoft will not allow it to be installed without a compatability check by them first. They give a warning when you try to install software. Software and product were very difficult to install, created problems for wireless internet router which kept me on phone for 2 hours with techs at ISP & wireless router manufacturer. Next day I had to repeat the process. That is when I discovered Microsoft's warning. It's simply not a good idea to buy this, or any product that hasn't been approved by Microsoft first where the packaging doesn't have the official approval seal from Microsoft if you have a PC. It will never download properly or work effectively. There has to be a reason why they didn't approve it.

Other Thoughts: Desktop has XP, requires adapter to use wireless router. Read reviews on Newegg, chose this based on that. Everyone had same complaint-driver software included not functioning and they were right. You can't download new drivers if you can't connect to the internet which was my problem. This product and software created a host of installation problems and caused my PC to start flickering uncontrollably. Too much time spent on problematic installation, simply not a good value for the price especially if Microsoft warns that it could cause permanent problems for your PC. Now I have to return it and restart process of figuring out what to buy all over again. If I could contact support to get a better idea that would be helpful. I have to say if you have XP on laptop or desktop don't use this device because it is not compatible.
