2 out of 5 eggsFirmware Issue

Pros: The QOS on it seems to be working as intended
Ultra fast wireless connection as advertised
The feeling of having 4 wireless networks :)

Cons: Where the wireless connection has always been great, I've seen performance drops in directly connected situations. After about 3 months I upgraded the firmware (as suggested by the router's software) ever since then the dhcp seems to stutter, and stop wanting to route entirely.

I tried factory resetting it, but it comes back up with the same version as before. As of right now it's stopped routing entirely.

Other Thoughts: I've requested an RMA from the seller twice, with no response. Very unprofessional.

If I receive an rma and the new one operates as intended I'll change from 2 to 5 eggs!

Manufacturer Response:

2 out of 5 eggsWorth the price?

Pros: It was really fast when I first got it. The wifi connection is really good.

Cons: It been less than a month and it keeps dropping my connections. I notice that there's also a fan on the bottom but never seen it spinning at least once.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear DJ, we want to extend our sincere apologies for the issue you have experienced. We always recommend ensuring that your router is up to date with the latest firmware, as this may easily resolve the issues you are experiencing. If you have already done so and are still experiencing these issues, in the interest of troubleshooting, you may want to reset the device back to factory default, as this will remove any residual configurations that may be causing conflicts within your network from an update that did not fully reset upon reboot of the unit.

If you feel at any time that our support team can be of further assistance in providing you with a positive resolution to your technical concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us directly at (855) 842-5370, or via our support website at: http://support.wdc.com/contact/contact.asp?lang=en&ct=networking

1 out of 5 eggsUnreliable router

Pros: 7 Gigabit ports, 2 USB ports, nice web configuration interface.

Cons: This router is simply unreliable as many other reviews have stated. At first the router would need to be power cycled once in a while, then every week, and eventually every day. I've tried rolling back the firmware from the latest version to every previous version. I performed a factory reset with every roll back to no avail. The fan on the bottom of the router has never turned on to my knowledge. In fact, I think there is something fundamentally wrong with either the thermal sensor or the coding in the firmware that dictates when the fan should activate. There are a ton of reviews and comments in the WD forums from users saying that the fan never turns on. I would have tried to send the router in for a warranty return, but I don't think it would have helped because I believe the router is unstable by design. This router will simply start to fail after a few months. This is the most unreliable router I have ever purchased.

Other Thoughts: Note any review giving this router five eggs. They probably haven't owned the router for more than a couple of months. If I had reviewed this router shortly after purchase I'd probably give it high marks as well. I purchased this at a retailer without reading reviews which is something I rarely do. I mainly purchased it because of the 7 gigabit ports. If you need 7 gigabit connections just buy a standard 4 port wireless router and a five port switch. The router and switch I ordered to replace this hunk of junk cost me $63 dollars. It's a single band wireless N router, but I don't need dual band in a 1000 sq ft apartment.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Andy,
It is unfortunate that you are experiencing problems with your Router. We understand your situation and will gladly replace your in-warranty device due to these concerns, as we stand by our products and their associated warranties.

2 out of 5 eggs50/50 reliability

Pros: I waited a year to write this review.

+1 - Fast, state of the art when it came out. Easy GUI.

Now see Cons

Cons: I waited a while to write this review.

On Firmware 1.07.16 ( Fri 12 Apr 2013) which is year old but still the latest firmware. I have had FastTrak QOS disabled for some time now in hopes it would fix issues. It hasn't.

Upon receiving the N900 router, I was excited as it seemed pretty state of the art. I bought it as a replacement for a TrendNet that had died after 3 years. Within 2 weeks, I started noticing some issues with this router.

Before I begin, I used inSSIDer (great tool) to analyze local Wireless networks to make sure I was on a clean channel when I received this router. There is only one other network from a nearby house (I'm in my own house, not an apartment). Once in a while, the WiFi network would drop - external tools and graphs showed drop in packets from my bedroom. Upon restarting the router, the signal would be back to normal.

Everything I've read indicates it overheats.

One thing I've also noticed is that the router's web services sometimes dies but the router remains functional. For example, tonight http://192.168.1.1 would not load when I was physically connected (cat 5e cable) via my desktop. I restarted my router and can now access the web service. Very frustrating.

Other Thoughts: I'm staying away from WD routers until they get their act together.

Manufacturer Response:

1 out of 5 eggsNot Worth It

Pros: Fast - When it works.
Easy to Setup

Cons: Unreliable - Drops internet connection.

Other Thoughts: Having super good luck with WD Drives in the past, I jumped at the opportunity to try out their router offering. Unfortunately, after about two months of owning the router, it began randomly dropping internet connection every couple days, worsening as time went on. I sent in for a warranty through WD, which was frustrating since I had to do on my phone since the router was useless. Got the replacement router, which worked well for about two weeks, but now has done the same thing as the original, but in a way shorter timeframe. Super disappointed, time to try a Netgear!

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Customer, we apologize for the continued inconvenience you have experienced with your device. As a troubleshooting step we recommend disabling the FasTrack feature, and also to ensure that you are getting a more stable connection you can try using a static IP for your WAN/ISP configuration. Please use the following link for more information.

3 out of 5 eggsIt's great on paper

Pros: 1. 7 Gigabit Ports
2. dual band wireless
3. has built in fan

Cons: 1. built in fan does not work
2. unit overheats
3. no DD-WRT

Other Thoughts: I wanted to love this router but it's got issues it's been the worst router I have ever had but it is fixable!

This comes with a built in fan which most routers don't have but it never comes on and the unit overheats!

Here's what I did to mine:

1. I rewired the fan to the back of the power plug so that it runs!

2. I drilled holes in the cover above where the fan sits

3. I added thick feet on the bottom to give the fan more air circulation room to help aid in exhausting hot air out the bottom vents.

Now I have an awesome router!!!

2 out of 5 eggsBig Disappointment

Pros: Easy setup, Nice options. One of the fastest routers I have owned.

Cons: Over-heats and fails when an external drive is added to it. Needs to be reset periodically to maintain fast internet speeds. Mine totally failed in only 5 months of use.
Doesn't work with WD drives (Go figure, it's a WD unit)

Other Thoughts: BIOS is up to date, Unit is placed in a cool spot (since it runs hot) and being in the coldest room it still failed (65 degree average). The ext drives tried were WD's which overheated the unit and caused it to fail within an hour. (Tried them on the first day of use) So I used it without them since it gave good net speeds, until now. The first 3 months the Wi-Fi was without problems but then began having a hard time to connect to my servers to stream videos.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valiant, we apologize for the inconvenience as this is not the intended experience for this product. We understand your situation and will gladly replace your in-warranty device, as we stand by our products and their associated warranties, and it is unfortunate that you are experiencing problems with your Router.

1 out of 5 eggsWould be great if it worked

Pros: Great features: dual band N, 5 GHz, 2 USB ports for hard drives, 7 (7!!!) gigabit ports

Cons: The router is too unstable and unreliably for the great features to ever be usable. The wired connections work great, but the wireless is absolutely worthless. Once or more a day, the router requires a restart due to stalled wifi connections.

In a 600 square feet apartment with 4 wireless devices and relatively few nearby competing devices, this should not be a problem.

I believe there to be a memory leak or processes not dying out. After a bit of wireless use, the router no longer functions. The connection is there, just no data will pass through.

Also, no idea if it's a problem with the phones or with the router, but both my iPhone 5S and a Galaxy S3 always have trouble with the router, even when my laptop is connecting fine. Somehow, considering it's two extremely widely used phones from two different companies, I imagine it's the router's fault.

Other Thoughts: If you get a (very) good deal, and you're looking for a wired-only router, this might be worth it for the high number of ports and USB slots. Otherwise, avoid it at all costs. It's been nothing but a $100 brick of disappointment and frustration.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear User, we apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you. As a troubleshooting step, please try to setup a static IP for your devices on the LAN and Router's WAN settings. This will potentially help to establish a more stable connection. We also recommend ensuring that your router is up to date with the latest firmware. Assistance in how to update your routers firmware can be viewed on page 66 of the user manual provided by the following link.

http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/library/UM/ENG/4779-705072.pdf#page=70

If you have already done so and are still experiencing these issues, in the interest of troubleshooting, you may want to reset the device back to factory defaults, as this will remove any residual configurations that may be causing conflicts within your network from an update that did not fully reset upon reboot of the unit.

5 out of 5 eggsgreat

Pros: I've had this router for 6 months now and so far no problem. The wireless range is great. I have no problem picking up signal in the bbq area behind my house. It's great! Even having 3 desktops, 1 netbook, 1 blu-ray player and 2 iPhones going, it holds up great.

Cons: none

1 out of 5 eggsTerrible Product

Pros: Speed is great when working. But internet drops continually all the time.

Cons: Internet drops out all the time. Sent one back and they replaced it with another that did the exact same thing. And yes I did reset to factory specs and installed latest firmware. Tech support was no help at all.

Other Thoughts: After I had one replaced I purchased a different brand router, I needed one right away for our small business and could not wait on the replacement to come in. I assumed the replacement would be fine and did not open it for about one year. When I did try to install it I had all the same problems as the first one. I called WD and asked to have it replaced but they refused since I had it about a year before opening it. WD knows about the problems with this router and apparently refuses to fix the problem or offer an alternative. This has definitely changed my view of Western Digital in a very negative way. I will not purchase another WD product if I can avoid it and I had been a very loyal WD customer up until this point.

Manufacturer Response:
