3 out of 5 eggsIt is an ok router

Pros: -Easy to set up
-Easy to configure Guest Wifi connection

Cons: Drops WiFi frequently. Firmware upgrades do not help.

Other Thoughts: Have had this router for a bit more than one year. Had I known that it will drop WiFi so frequently I would not have bought it even for $40 I found it on Newegg.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: cost, documentation (with some exceptions), a default 'setting' card is thoughtfully included on the bottom of the router, reliable operation (so far),

Cons: none for our application as a bridge

Other Thoughts: We bought this to upgrade our 2.4ghz N bridge. We had concerns buying an AC866 router with 100M ethernet switch ports. Unless my math is greatly in error 100M ethernet should be able to transfer data at more than 90% of of the full rate of AC866. But in our location we have never achieved more than about 60% of the nominal rated wireless data rate. The 100M ethernet switch ports should be more than adequate to bridge anything that comes wireless.

Further, the HRD1166D converts the 1gb WAN port to a 1gb LAN port when placed in bridge mode. We already connect our pcs to the bridge with a 1gb switch. The 100M ethernet switch ports are simply not relevant when the WRD1166D is used in bridge mode.

A word of caution for those who tend not to read manuals front to back. In bridge mode the default IP is not as in router mode. In addition to setting the switch on the rear to "bridge", the admin will also have to implement the "WB" settings with a browser to complete setting up the HRD1166D as a bridge.

The HRD1166D has clean, well made design, clean software interface, clear, accessible manual that could benefit from a FAQ, or 'how to' section. We look forward to many years of reliable service.

5 out of 5 eggsBUFFALO Airstation AC 1200

Pros: Clean design, Stable connection, Simple user interface.

Cons: None that I can see.

Other Thoughts: Compared to all the high-priced 802.11ac routers out there, this ac router comes with minimum bells and whistles, but a good performance and solid design. I got it on sale from newegg for $29.99, that is an excellent price. BUFFALO products are mostly well known in Japan where they come from, but not in North America. I have been very happy since I got it and installed it. I definitely do recommend it.

1 out of 5 eggsHorrible router

Pros: NONE!

Cons: This is the worst router. It overheats and stops working after about a day. Then I need to restart it. My super old Linksys wireless G router was so much better. I made the mistake of throwing out the box before testing it. I just threw money in the garbage.

4 out of 5 eggsBuffalo AC1200

Pros: Bought it for the purpose of wireless bridge. Works great as WB in 5 GHz band.

Cons: Manufacturer could be less stingy on wireless bridge documentation! If not having enough technical knowledge, I can't see how someone could set it up. For that, I take one egg off.

5 out of 5 eggsgreat entry-level AC1200 router/AP/bridge

Pros: - inexpensive
- ac1200 speeds
- simple firmware that supports router / AP / bridge modes painlessly
- gigabit WAN port

Cons: - does not support 3rd party firmware like DD-WRT / openwrt / tomato
- 10/100 lan port speeds

Other Thoughts: I am using this as a standalone access point to support the multitude of wireless devices my family now owns and it is perfect. Since we now have several devices as well as a couple of wireless-bridge access points that use the 5ghz band this will provide the bandwidth they all need. I am giving this 5 eggs since it can provide ac1200 speeds and router / AP / bridge modes at such a low price (I got this for 2 benjamin notes during the black friday sale) no other router can even come close even at 2x the price which mitigates the cons listed easily.

some additional specs:
- MediaTek MT7620A (2x2:2,bgn, switch 10/100-LAN/WAN)
- MediaTek MT7612E (2x2:2,an+ac)
- RAM 128Mb

2 out of 5 eggsCheap for a reason

Pros: Worked as a basic router. If you do nothing but plug and play over wireless this may be for you.

Cons: 10/100 LAN on an AC1200 router is just laughable. It's been close to a decade since Gigabit LAN entered the home! 10/100 LAN does not translate to "Ideal for high speed media streaming and lag-free online gaming".

Port Forwarding didn't work at all for me. Tried it, made sure to follow directions from their manual. Played with it for hours to try and get it working. Updated firmware, the whole 9 yards. Had to return it. I ended up buying another router for about the same price and guess what, port forwarding worked find. Won't be buying buffalo again soon.

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: small, unobtrusive case. easy setup for stnadard use using factory firmware.

Cons: no DD-WRT firmware version available for this unit

Other Thoughts: This model is very different from the WZR-1166DHP which does have a version of DD-WRT firmware avaiable. My mistake in ordiering it.
