Ultimate Flexibilty and Maximum Performance with the Hi-Gain Dual-Band Wireless-N Router

Hi-Gain™ Dual-Band Wireless-N Router creates a Dual-Band Wi-Fi network to share a single wired internet connection with multiple users. Compatible with 802.11a/b/g/n networks, the HD45R is an ideal solution to upgrade and improve your wireless experience. The HD45R combines revolutionary Dual-Band technology with removable external antennas to upgrade your overall wireless experience. Boosting speeds of up to 750mbps, the HD45R transmits both 2.4GHz and 5.0GHz wireless signal simultaneously. As a result, it provides a stronger and more solid wireless connection to improve overall performance, such as improving the data transfer speed and reducing lag while streaming or downloading multimedia content (video, music, etc.). Along with wireless connectivity, the 4 Gigabit Ethernet LAN ports provide blazing fast connection for devices that do not have wireless access. The HD45R also offers the latest wireless security features, ensuring that your files and network are safe from outside intruders.

The 2.4GHz is the most commonly used wireless bandwidth. It also has a limited number of bandwidth for multiple activities, such as sending emails, video chatting, streaming movies, playing games, etc. Interference and major backlog to online activities are common in the 2.4Ghz frequency since it is shared by different devices (i.e. laptops, tablets, smartphones, and ever your microwave). The Dual-Band technology provides maximum flexibility for your Dual-Band compatible devices to connect to the popular 2.4GHz frequency and also off-load traffic to a faster less-crowded 5.0GHz frequency.

The image below compares a standard wireless network to a Hawking Dual-Band Wireless Network. In a standard wireless network, all network activities are going through a narrow and smaller bandwidth. Dual-Band Wireless Network let's your traffic follow freely and at a faster speed.

Because the 2.4GHz frequency is the most commonly used, interference with other 2.4GHz networks is inevitable, limiting your network speed and performance. With the availability of the 5.0GHz frequency, users can circumvent this interference and optimize their Wi-Fi connectivity.

A common problem with standard wireless routers is that the quality of most standard wireless networks diminishes significantly past a coverage radius of 200 feet. Anywhere outside the coverage zone will have slow and unstable connections, or even as major as no connection at all. The HD45R is designed to create a network with simultaneous 2.4GHz or 5.0GHz wireless communication that increases data speeds and maximizes your range.

While most standard Dual-Band wireless routers transfer speeds are up to 300Mbps for both frequencies, the Hawking Dual-Band products promote data speeds of up to 300Mbps for the 2.4GHz frequency and 450Mbps for the 5.0GHz frequency. This means users can have more bandwidth and transfer more files in less time.

The HD45R combines revolutionary Dual-Band technology with removable external antennas to upgrade your overall wireless experience.

The HD45R is quick and easy to install using a Wi-Fi enabled device (i.e. tablet, smartphone, Mac or Windows computer). Hassle-free means, there is no Ethernet cable or CD required for the installation. Simply power up the unit, use a Wi-Fi enabled device, and login into the set up page. This installation feature lets you configure and set up the HD45R within minutes.

1 out of 5 eggsSeriously....

Pros: Hawking is boxing the wrong products...see cons.

Cons: Hawking goofed up. I bought 3 of these, 2 from newegg, 1 from another online retailer (since newegg only had 2 in stock) and all 3 came in sealed boxes labeled HD45R but inside of each was a nicely wrapped HD45X. The X is for extender and is not a router, the R is what I needed.... The first thing you will notice is there is no WAN/Internet port like their router would have had.

Other Thoughts: I have bought these routers in the past and actually got the router and they are GREAT. Unfortunately someone at the factory goofed.

1 out of 5 eggsDON'T BUY!! BAD ROUTER....

Pros: -1 EGG, better than none.... (because I have to give at least one).

-Fair LAN connection, that's it.

Cons: -Three extremely low dBi antennas.

-HORRIBLE wireless connection. I am literally 10'-15' (yes, feet, so like 2-3 average person's height away!) and all my devices show poor, if any, signal. I'm better off using my 3G signal from my phone.

-Customer service is non-existent. Emailed 2-3 weeks ago, no response or acknowledgement that I even sent one.

Other Thoughts: I could've bought a LINKSYS router for half the price and much better signal. Don't try new brands, stick with reliable known brands.

Manufacturer Response:

Sorry for your experience. We usually reply to all email inquiries within 1 business day. We also have 24/7 support at 888-202-3344 and we can answer and troubleshoot all inquries as soon as possible.

Did you have the antennas attached and secured? This model has been on the market for over 3 years and we even use the product in the office at ranges up to 100 feet away. You shuold not have had only 5-15 feet distance.
It sounds like a hardware fault. If so, we have a 1 year warranty on all our products.

2 out of 5 eggsNot the best value for the price.

Pros: Great LAN speeds. moves extremely large files (10-20GB) in just minutes to another machine on the LAN. Fairly quick and easy setup.

Cons: I feel there are more cons than pro's.

1) Menus are dreadfully slow after the last bios update, taking up to 2 mins to load a menu page.
2) Each time you save a setting, you have to wait 45 seconds for the router to reset itself.
3) Slow network connection on boot; takes windows 2-3 additional mins to connect to the network after pc boots, on ALL machines in the house.
4) Marginal WiFi speeds, even giving unstable connection errors from 8 feet away at times. 5K unusable from more than about 20' from the router.
5) Port forwarding does not work. BIOS update was supposed to fix this problem but I installed the latest BIOS and no luck yet.
6) Poor phone support; Called Hawking support several times to address some of these issues and all they were able to have me do was reset my router, forcing me to reconfigure it and pretty much wasting my time since I had already read all their support pages and did all that BEFORE I called. Every issue I called about I was told to reset the router, which did nothing. Beyond that they were zero help.

Other Thoughts: This router looks great on paper but the reality of it is that Hawking is aware of the issues this unit has and has done little to nothing to fix any of it.

Manufacturer Response:

Sorry for your issues. It is very strange you are experiencing all these issues. We use the same router in our office
1) It shouldn't do that. The unit we have here is going through each page with no major delays
2) Unfortunately that is correct. The unit does require 45s to reboot. We suggest you make all your changes at once, then do a reboot to mitigate the issue
3) We have smartphones/tablets/laptops that connect to this device daily with no issue like you describe. Try adjusting the DHCP lease time to "forever" under general settings, local network
4) we have devices connecting from over 100 feet away in our parking lot. We suggest you try different channels in case of interference. Also, be sure to be using at least WPA2 AES security for optimal performance
5) We are using a FTP server and several security cameras through the HD45R here in the office. Port Forwarding is working. Are you sure its not an issue with the ISP and/or a firewall issue on your computer?
6) Sorry, we will try to do better.

We believe the router in question may be a defective unit since several of the issues you addressed are not happening here or with other customers. We have a 1 year warranty. Please contact our customer service @ customerservice @

2 out of 5 eggsHmm...

Pros: WAS very fast, awesome coverage on a very large home. Simultaneous dual band. Loved it.

I see the price has dropped monstrously. Now I know why, read Cons.

Cons: Lasted about 18 months. Won't stay connected. 2.4 is dead 99% of the time, 5 band is still working sorta. If you call dialup download speeds acceptable on a 120M capable connection. When it's functioning, which is completely hit and miss. More miss than hit and I can't call it a hit, more of a foul ball.

Not exactly thrilled.

Other Thoughts: Eighteen months isn't what I call a good return on my investment. My old wireless Gamer Lounge served for over four years of heavy punishment.

Mixed feelings on this purchase.

1 out of 5 eggsCurrently Not Working Right

Pros: Sleek, Light design. Price was comparable to what Verizon was going to charge for less of a router.

Cons: Will Update When I Have Moved.
Currently unable to see the router at a distance of ~400 ft. I have the router set up in a lower apartment and trying to access 1 floor above. 2.4 GHz is seen but with poor signal strength, and 5 GHz with 0 signal strength.
The 2.4 GHz band will barely connect and when it does it will not authenticate. Again, I believe this is due to the distance through walls.

Other Thoughts: I WILL UPDATE AFTER MOVE. I will be moving into a house this month. I will update to how it works.

5 out of 5 eggsSimply the best. (period).

Pros: This is a more advanced router giving features that I've only seen in the ones double this price. The biggest pro for me was the ability to forward two different external ports to one local port. Besides that, quality is top notch compared to the many other routers I've ordered. Sturdy build, simple fast interface with advanced options. Never had to reboot, never had signal loss, signal range has never suffered. Has been completely flawless.

Cons: None, nada.

Other Thoughts: Nice to find someone who makes something of this quality. I will keep an eye out for their other products for sure.

2 out of 5 eggsUpdate to: Good, With a few quirks

Pros: -Best range of any router I've owned
-Wide range of features
-External antennas
-Simultaneous Dual Band
-Gigabit Ethernet (Legit Gigabit Performance, 125MBps)
-Has lasted longer than my other wireless routers.

Cons: -Whenever you change a setting that requires the router to reboot (This is mostly all of the settings),
-Wireless performance has become HORRIBLE(See other thoughts)
-Is now refusing to talk to my wireless printer when there were no issues before.

Other Thoughts: Although the issue with my cable modem fixed itself, wireless performance has become painfully slow. File transfers from my home server (Wired, Gigabit Card) have dropped to 1-2MBps. I have tried disabling wirless a/b/g, keeping only N and vice-versa, but theres no change whatsoever. After trying to disable 2.4GHz and then 5GHz there's no change. It has been restarted and unplugged.I have absolutely no idea what's wrong with it.

VERDICT: I do recommend this router if you do NOT do home networking or do home networking through WIRED ONLY. Wireless performance is fine internet-wise(I have a 16Mbps connection). If you have faster than that look at another router.

2 out of 5 eggsWorks well but has several annoying issues

Pros: Fast wifi speeds with dual band for HD streaming to various devices.

Cons: Slow to configure, limited configuration in some respects. Have to wait 45 seconds for unit to reset every time you change a setting. Slow connecting to network on boot.

Other Thoughts: Overall the unit was not terribly difficult to configure, however I don't like having to wait 45 seconds for the unit to reset every time a setting change is made. Also, all PC's connected to this unit take about a minute before the network connects once the desktop comes up. This is not slow boot process, every PC started doing it once the router was installed so you have to sit there and wait for the network to connect before you can go online. Apps that update on boot error out due to lack of network connection. Device frequently resets randomly sometimes 2-3 times a day causing all pc's to lose network connection for 1-3 mins. Checking the Hawking web site, not one firmware update has been released for this unit since it's creation. Hawking built this thing then quickly forgot about it despite advertising it as firmware upgradable. Their web page has literally nothing in the way of support for this model. Even their RMA page is poorly worded an confusing.

Manufacturer Response:

Sorry for your experience. Sounded like you had a bad unit because there haven't been any known disconnect/reset problems with this unit. As for the reconnects,in our testing, we tested 10 different makes/models of computers and they all took less than 20s to reconnect after cold boot/resets. The firmware the HD45R was on was FW 1.11 (shipping firmware) and there haven't been any issues so there's been no new firmware (as of 10/2013). The support link on the page has a FAQ and manuals/QIGs.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Does what it should. Bought this to replace other router that would randomly drop connections and have to be rebooted. Have had a constant reliable connection ever since installing this router. Love the gig-e LAN ports.

Cons: Would be nice to have more control of the device through the UI.

4 out of 5 eggsSlight issue with router, customer service a mixed bag. Overall a good device.

Pros: - Very stable
- Acceptable wifi range
- Dual Band
- Gigabit, N-wireless

Cons: - Having an issue (as another owner mentioned) with the router taking a while to get a connection after booting up. More on this below.
- Have spoken with at least 3 customer service people, two via email, one via phone. Phone CS was TERRIBLE (typical outsourced, no clue what I was talking about).
- Web interface could be laid out better, but it's the first release so they may make some improvements in the future.

Other Thoughts: A review by "Tom P" mentioned there being a 20 second delay in connectivity after booting. I'm having the same problem, but a much longer delay. Every time I reboot the computer, wake it up from sleep mode, or turn it on, it takes a good 45 seconds to 1 minute after I get into Windows before I can get any connection at all. I can't even ping the router. It's extremely frustrating, as it causes all of my internet-connected startup programs (Steam, GoogleTalk, etc) to timeout. Not to mention I can't use my browser during that time. I just sit and wait and mess around on my phone until I have a connection. I have a direct FiOS connection, no modem between the router and my ISP, and I'm using a wired connection, not wireless (for the most part).

The first customer service rep I spoke to via email was helpful and knowledgeable and forwarded my message to the R&D team. He said it was strange and that I was the first to report the issue (I also mentioned Tom P's review).

My problem went away on its own for a month or so, and then came back. I emailed about it again with further technical details and apparently got a different CS rep. He asked if I had a problem with wireless. I said no, other than the fact that Windows said I had "no internet access" for a few minutes, when I actually did have a connection. I thought nothing of this but mentioned it anyway and he basically just replied "that's normal" .. and that was the end of the conversation. Keep in mind my original question was related to wired, not wireless.

The third time around I called. Got through to someone quickly.. but it seems their support is outsourced to India (surprise surprise). The woman I spoke with had NO clue what I was talking about. I explained all of this to her very clearly, and her response was, "So websites load slowly? That's normal." For crying out loud. I asked if they had senior tech support I could speak with, she said yes but refused to transfer me. I am ready and willing to help these guys locate the problem but they're making it horribly difficult. I'm almost certain it's something that can be fixed in the firmware.

It seems like an excellent router aside from this problem. It has a lot of options and features, wireless range is pretty good, small footprint.
