5 out of 5 eggsbeats the competition

Pros: better than other similar models specifically trendnet

can be set up to pull a dhcp from central sever and allow clients to do the same other brands had to have a static set

can take a url as ntp server other brands couldent

later firmware out of the box 1.3.2

can download a config from one and use it to setup others easily

Cons: 1 out of 5 did not function correctly

Other Thoughts: can be used with a plastic low voltage mounts(either for an outlet or fan/light old work pancakes) from home depot for ceiling tile mounting. just drill different hols in the mounting bracket. I just put some sheet metal screws in the metal grid of the dropdown

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Range and strong signal

Pros: The appearance and physical mounting is good. I was able to easily get it installed using PoE to power. This feels very much like a business class device. For a 2.4 Ghz system it pushes a pretty deep signal. I set this up in a very cluttered 2.4 Ghz environment and it was able to stretch 25 ft retaining a -50 to -60 dBm signal. It’s 300 I tested this using a Samsung Galaxy S4, ASUS Zenbook with a 2x2 radio, HP Laptop using a 2x2 USB WiFi NIC, and a 2x2 from Killer. Connection remained solid between all devices when moving through various rooms up to 30 ft. from the AP. This device appears to be all about range and if you’re in an area with little WiFi clutter on channels it’s excellent for keeping a strong connection.

Cons: The configuration menus didn’t feel as intuitive as I’d like. Configuring WDS was trickier than I expected and I ended up just using it as a straight AP. Not all of the menu items are informed in detail in the GUI. It took some playing with options to get what I wanted.
No 5Ghz. With 2.4 Ghz so limiting missing a 5 Ghz simultaneous radio makes this hard to push unless it’s going into a large warehouse or physical location that has no other WiFi around.

Other Thoughts: While I retained a connection which is the point of this the speed never hit 300 Mbps. I used inSSIDer to monitor my connection and the NICs always register around 150 throughput or less. This is due mostly to various networks. Given the area I installed has at least 15 other networks around this isn’t the fault of the device but of the 2.4 Ghz only limitation.

You’ll want to grab the manual for best use so you can fiddle with various settings with better detail as to what you're doing.

I have almost no channels I can swap to that won’t have other wireless traffic and given that a 5 Ghz option is extremely important. If you are in an area such as an apartment or large scale office building, check your traffic using WiFi Analyzer or inSSIDer.

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: This is a business class device, It works well as an access point. It also has decent range. I was able to access the network from over 100 yards with three bars, After plugging it in and connecting it to the network my wireless devices were able to see it almost immediately . Good price. It is very versatile and has great features for a business.

Cons: It is not for the average home user. At the current price it may be tempting for the home user that needs an access point or wants a repeater to extend the range of their wireless router. If you do not have above average knowledge of networks or know someone who does, I would advise against it. The quick start guide appears to be written for a windows XP user. The users manual is minimal. It is definitely aimed at businesses that have knowledgeable network assistance In order to configure the device you first have to change the IP address and subnet mask of your computer. Of course this means that your home computer probably won't access you wired network without changing it back. Then you can open your browser and enter the Access Point IP address. The manual (you will have to download it) will give you a preview of what the configuration pages look like, but not much else. As a universal repeater, It is apparently not compatible with some wireless routers. It appears to be not compatible with mine as I was unsuccessful in getting it working, no matter what I did. I searched for a hardware compatibility list. I didn't find one.

Other Thoughts: The EnGenius EAP9550 is feature rich. There are many folks out there that love it. I encourage you to do your homework before buying to make sure that you need this. If you need just need a repeater or extender to improve the range of your wireless network, there are other choices available that are very simple to configure. If you have a need for a device like this and have the networking knowledge or the time to learn, at the current price, it is definitely worth a look.

3 out of 5 eggsdoes the job, though less than what is advertised

Pros: Boosted the signal to everywhere in my house, even in the opposite corner of the basement (repeater is on 2nd floor above-ground). Fast internet for gaming.

Cons: Although the Access Point/Repeater did boost my range astronomically, it did not carry the same internet power that my actual router did. Had a very noticeable bottleneck when it came to downloads.

Other Thoughts: Although it is advertised as a repeater as well as an access point, the product did not act as a repeater. I have a Comcast Wireless Gateway and, through Tech Support at EnGenius, came to learn that this product is NOT COMPATIBLE as a repeater for my Gateway. This came as a shock and I was very disappointed, though it still worked as an access point.

I gave this 3 eggs because although it supercharged my internet radius, the power of it was much less and it DID NOT work as it was advertised.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Thank you for purchasing the EAP9550.

As a rule, the farther the range from an access point, the lower the throughput rate. Some things you may try to do to improve throughput, make sure the EAP9550 and your wireless gateway are on different non-overlapping channels such as 1, 6, or 11 to minimize interference. The placement of the AP, where there are least obstructions in relation to the client device is also a big factor. If using encryption, use WPA2 with AES only (WEP or WPA with TKIP are considered legacy forms of encryption) in order to connect at higher speed modulation rates.

Regarding the repeater function, EAP9550 is designed to be used as a WDS repeater with another EAP9550. Using WDS is a not an IEEE802.11 standard type of connection. If you require a universal repeater that will work as a repeater with your Comcast wireless gateway, we recommend using the ERB9250 or ERB300H.

Sincerely,

EnGenius Customer Support Team

5 out of 5 eggsGreat unit for the price

Pros: Well made, sturdy, easy to install, easy to configure. The signal strength is higher than I thought it would be. Seems to be a good value for the price. Under $100. Looks great on a drop ceiling. No ugly antenna. RANGE, baby.

Cons: None that I can think of

Other Thoughts: Set up 3 in a "roaming" environment using POE in a government office setup. They look very professional and work well. I have had no complaints and have not had to do any followup work. I'm thinking about getting one for home. Seriously, they are strong and reliable and blend in with all the other stuff that is on ceilings.

Did not break the bank. I wanted the lowest price unit that looked the best and had the potential to perform at commercial grade reliability, meaning no rebooting. This seems to be that unit.

1 out of 5 eggsVery unsatisfied

Pros: Easy to install/configure

Cons: Unreliable. Very limited capacity.

Other Thoughts: I manage a small network for a private school in Dallas. Our setup is very unsophisticated, and we've been using WAP54Gs for wireless access. We got a grant for a bunch of iPads, so we decided to upgrade two of the WAPs, and this product looked like a good, economical alternative.

I've had trouble with both of the EAP9550s. Both of them seem to stop working after being in operation for a period of time. I just power-cycle them because that's easiest.

This weekend was the worst experience I've had. We got 12 new laptops and I was running MS Update on them. After getting four laptops signed onto the WAP and downloading updates, the WAP stopped responding to new connection requests. Rebooting didn't help. I resolved the problem by getting one of the old WAP54Gs out of the closet. It handled 12 laptops simultaneously with no trouble.

Manufacturer Response:

2 out of 5 eggsNot quite as advertised

Pros: Appearance and ease of set up was awesome

Cons: Power is not as powerful as one would think after reading the description and wattage. I thought with the power that this transmitter put out it would go over a block away before the signal was lost. So I quickly 'rough' installed it in my basement near the floor joists and took a stroll around the house with my iPhone checking for signal strength. I went outside and walked in front of my garage which is about 50' away line-of-sight and lost signal. After checking the perimeter of my house the signal was gone or nearly gone anywhere outside. I was disappointed, but thought it was because it was in the basement. I recently moved it into my garage. Now I don't have a huge house. It's a ranch of about 1800 sq ft so not huge right? The signal is nearly lost in the other end of the house and completely gone in the finished basement bedroom directly below that area. It looks like when this thing dies or I get other priorities taken care of this device will no longer serve a purpose and will get an allegedly better wireless transmitter. Not worth the money for the wattage you are expecting.

3 out of 5 eggsIt's OK.

Pros: It has a sleek-looking form factor and is easy to get up and running. I have it connected via powerline adapter to my primary router in the other corner of the house, and it definitely extends my range nicely.

Cons: The problem is the older, cheaper WRT54GL I had upstairs had better signal on the other side of the downstairs, and devices kept trading back and forth. Also, I bought this to replace a Zyxel device and expected significantly better but only got incrementally better.

Other Thoughts: I still have this connected as a separate SSID but now use it sparingly, as I've replaced the WRT54GL with an AWESOME ASUS RT-AC66U. I don't really see a lot of value in this device, as similar devices are maybe 80-90% as good for half the price.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect

Pros: Perfect for what I need at my home. Currently have two in service (will be adding a third) in a Wifi roaming arraignment. I am using 2 of the 4 SSIDs (one for private access, one for public access), separated using VLANS. The setup of the access point was easy and self explanatory. Also, I am using PoE. That works like a charm. As others have said, the LEDs can be turned off, which is a good thing because they are quite bright.

Cons: None yet.

Other Thoughts: If you need a simple, attractive AP, this is the ticket. The PoE and VLANs are a huge plus.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Product. Wrong Application

Pros: Easy to use, many advance features, great range

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Customer said they had a managed switch that supported VLANs....they didn't, so the multiple SSIDs with VLAN tagging wasn't implemented.
