5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Gigabit, small PCI card.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: Works great with Windows XP 64-bit!

The OS picked the driver as soon as I booted up my machine, I didn't need to use the driver software on the included CD.

2 out of 5 eggs... kinda works with Linux...

Pros: Easy installation with Linux; that's been noted.

Cons: I bought 2 of these, for identical systems. One works fine, clearly faster than 100Mbps under load. The other runs at roughly 5Mbps max, despite being configured for 1Gbps. It appears the same, except that it's incurring framing errors (look for a non-zero count for frame: in ifconfig), which to me suggests a bad board. I'm not pushing it; just standard mtu=1500 autonegotiated configuration, which except for the framing errors seems to be fine.

Other Thoughts: I haven't researched them so I'm not sure this VIA chipset is of any higher quality than the Realtek chipsets - both are well supported by Linux. In my experience, Realtek NIC chips have never had this kind of problem.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat non-Windows cards

Pros: Bought 2 to bring my internal network to 1Gb. The following installations recognize the ZyXEL's out of the box:
Fedora Core (4,5)
CentOS 4.4
...probably many other 2.6 kernels
FreeBSD 5.5-STABLE
FreeBSD 6.2-RELEASE

Very good price!!

Cons: Can't push 10-Gbps :-) You may get better performance with a "server NIC" and more CPU "umph."

Other Thoughts: FTP: ~35MB/s
SCP: ~25MB/s
Samba/CIFS: 30MB/s+
...
between 2.8GHz P4; 1.8GHz A64; 2.6GHz A64X2

4 out of 5 eggsCheap and it works

Pros: It connects at 1 Gbps to my router so it works under WinXP Sp2.

Cons: No ability to force 1000 full duplex. Options are only Auto, 10 half, full, 100 half, full.

Other Thoughts: For less than a starter, main and pudding at most casual dining resturants you get a 1 Gbps card for your boards that dont have these built in.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat with linux

Pros: As mentioned by another reviewer, this card works great with linux, using stock drivers. Load driver via_velocity (related driver crc_ccitt).

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: This device does not have one of the low-quality Realtek chips, does not require fiddling, and just works. I can flood ping another box on the other side of the house with another gigabit, and there is never a second ping that starts before the first ping comes back.

5 out of 5 eggsplays nicely with linux

Pros: Moderately priced.

ACPI aware.

VIA Velocity chipset is supported in the linux kernel. Comes with driver source and a user's guide in pdf format.

Cons: I'm still thinking about that. Hold on.........
