2 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Good speeds when they worked.

Cons: Bulky
After 2 years they no longer pair together, which means they are worthless.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks with my Netgear XAVB5001

Pros: Works effortlessly with my Netgear XAVB5001 power line adapters which is a real savings.

Cons: As discussed, I'm sure, you don't get 500 Mbps across.

Other Thoughts: Not quite as simple as plug and play, if you have an existing power line system as I did, the ZyXEL power line adapter is simple to set up. First, to configure with my Netgear XAVB5001, I used the Netgear utility to set the password on all units to the default (both systems use the same default HomeplugAV password). Then I removed the Netgear device that was connected to the router and replaced it with the ZyXEL. The two devices immediately saw each other. The speed between them looked about right for my set up (although leaving an unencrypted network appears to add speed between them). That's all it took. I then, of course, created a new password for both systems just in case.

5 out of 5 eggsExactly as advertised.

Pros: Plug it into two plugs, instant network bridge.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I just set them up, so I still need to do some testing on actual performance between the two, but I just wanted to quickly write up a positive review, since there are a handful of negative ones.

-Plug and play - there's nothing to configure.
-Mine are going across breakers and between floors (2nd to 1st) in a home built in 2006.

Between a few reviews about the problems between floors/breakers, I wasn't sure it would work, but it's currently working great. I'll update this review if I have any issues, as well as benchmarks when I get around to running them.

5 out of 5 eggsThe perfect solution for adding to your network

Pros: Easy set up
Plug and play
Very convenient when needed to add netowrk access points

Cons: loose access to plug, but they have new models that address that issue.

Other Thoughts: I have been using this model (1 and 4 port models) since they were released. These devices have come a long way sionce the 1MB poweline models.

There are many factors that contribute to the speed variants that people have been talking about. wire connections to the sockets, UPS devices, surge protectors, arc faults and distance are major factors when setting these up.

These have been designed to work on home power lines, but there are many factors that can slow you down. One you take these factors into account you may be able to increase yourthrough put. The devices and cables that connect the network, access point or router need to be of good quality. The connection to your power socket needs to be secure and you should have a good groud on the electrical system.

Any radio interference (hum) from computers, microwaves or florenscent light will be refelced in the speed. If you are not getting the speed you think you should be getting you can test your lines for noise to see if this is the issue.

I have set these devices up in 1, 2, and 3 story houses with little or no issue. Most of the issues are loose electrical connections at the socket (use due care if you do this yourself). Using a central location close to the power panel is the best place to connect the switch/router if possible.

This product is the best all around answer to extend your network without having to run new network cables.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Gadget

Pros: Easy to set up

Cons: Expensive

Other Thoughts: Other than the price, I really have no complaints on these things. I bought a set to solve a wifi interference problem in my entertainment center with my xbox 360. Had them for about a year and love them.

5 out of 5 eggsSo Many Uses

Pros: Originally purchased for apartment use where Wifi from my 2.4/5ghz Asus router was up and down due to crosstalk from neighbors and distance, not to mention my PS3 didn't operate on N so there was a huge hole as well. Though the speed was only marginally better at the units average speeds it was constant compared to the wifi's ups and downs and had a much greater peak speed. On a 30gb connection I can regularly get 2-2.5mb/s downloads on torrents and my PS3 was typically host when I was playing BO2 and the like even though some friends I was with were on direct Ethernet connections.

Cons: .

Other Thoughts: I have read a lot of the reviews saying these things can be picky (and it made me very hesitant) however I have since used them on an apartment complex built in the 70s, a home built in 82, and a home built in 2003 without issue so I would take some of the complaints with a grain of salt. There will always be someone with an issue due to shoddy wiring in homes but overall these things are a champ when you don't want to or simply can't wire an ethernet cable.

4 out of 5 eggsActual speed tests

Pros: Good product; for technical people probably what makes most sense is some actual speed tests. So here are my results:

TEST 1: Connected in 2 different rooms, passing one circuit breaker, approx. 150 ft of electrical wire:
latency: 7.158 ms
average TCP transfer speed (over 10 minutes): 5.3MB/s

TEST 2: Connected in same room, passing one circuit breaker, approx. 90 ft of electrical wire:
latency: 5.526 ms
average TCP transfer speed (over 10 minutes): 8.9MB/s

TEST 3: Connected in same room, same circuit breaker, approx. 20 ft of electrical wire:
latency: 3.548 ms
average TCP transfer speed (over 10 minutes): 15.7MB/s

TEST 4: Connected in same electrical socket, same circuit breaker, 0 ft of electrical wire:
latency: 4.002 ms
average TCP transfer speed (over 10 minutes): 24.8MB/s

This product will do just fine in a place where direct CAT5/6 is not an option.

Cons: As seen above, connection speed and latency will vary greatly based on copper distance and is a circuit breaker is in the "middle".
