4 out of 5 eggsAmpedWireless RTA15 Wireless Router.

Pros: NewEgg is excellent. Their customer support and willingness to refund my money for this defective item is outstanding. 5 Stars to Newegg, but One star removed because of AmpedWireless.

Replacement router purchased through AmpedWireless and tested by Steve #109 worked flawlessly as described and expected.

Cons: The router came DOA. Worked with AmpedWireless support to get it to work. Upgraded Firmware, moved around antennas, reset the unit. Nothing worked. Had to send it back to NewEgg for refund.

Other Thoughts: I first purchased this Amped Wireless High Power 700mW Dual Band AC Wi-Fi Router (RTA15) from NewEgg.com. When the router arrived, It did not work at all. I could not get a signal 5 feet away. And the support tech I spoke to was really disappointing. He had me go through all sorts of hoops which did not work. He made excuses that this is a brand new model and may experience issues. He asked me to return it to Newegg and have them send me a new one. I had no confidense that the next one NewEgg sends me would work any better since it would probably be from the same batch that left the factory. He did not give me a feeling that this company knew what they were doing. I decided to return the router to NewEgg who were excellent. They issued the refund right away.

I contacted AmpedWireless to express my dissatisfaction with the product and company. I was contacted almost immediately by one of their Concierge Support Professionals whose name is Steve #109. Steve said and did everything that I would expect from a customer service and/or support professional. He told me to purchase the router through them and he would personally test it before it shipped. I got a much better feeling about the company and decided to give them another shot. As promised, steve thoroughly tested the new router, called me to let me know that everything worked fine and shipped it to me.

The new router came to me quickly. I plugged it in, configured it, and I have to say this unit works as advertised. I am extremely happy with the router, the support that Steve Concierge #109 gave me and have confidence in this company now.

3 out of 5 eggsAwesome hardware - terrible firmware

Pros: WiFi transmitter is amazing

Cons: If you use the wizard set up is a breeze, however if you intend to do any custom settings (renaming the SSID, reserve IP addys ETC...) Make a full pot of coffee, get a bottle of tylonol and have the Tech support number handy!
This unit was the hardest piece of hardware I have ever set up -- bar none! I have been doing routers and networks since 2001. As soon as I updated the firmware - I could no longer log in to the router to finish the config. A call to tech support (see other thoughts on their tech support) netted me the info that once you update the firmware you need to push the factory reset for 15 seconds, reboot the router, unplug the router and restart it again - then viola you can log in - and the new firmware is installed. After that - every single change you make you have to reboot the router - if you do more than one setting at a time you will loose all but the last setting when you do finally reboot.
After I finally got the unit fully configured (2 hours including the call to tech support) the unit ran great - except.... it disconnected each machine, NAS device on my network every ten minutes or so. The DHCP on this unit is TERRIBLE!!!
In the end I reconfigured the router to be a WAP, turned off DHCP and assigned it a static IP after reconnecting my trusty, super easy to configure, not so great WiFi range, super solid network conecting Netgear router . (WNDR 4500)

Other Thoughts: As a WAP this unit excels - and is actually 10$ cheaper then the Amped WAP. I located it on the second floor and now have 5 bars in the 2.4Ghz range almost every ware on the property. At 5 Ghz I have 4 to 5 bars everyware in the house.

A note about their tech support... they are awesome. I called and was greeted by an extremely professional, knowledgeable, courteous person named Sam (#138). He walked me through the initial reset after I updated the firmware clearly and with easily understood directions. Most other tech companies need to take note of Amped tech support.
Final Summary: The WiFi is second to none for signal strength. It is to bad the firmware is so sloppy, this really kills an otherwise solid router.

Manufacturer Response:

micksterjs,

We apologize for the inconvenience that this unit may have caused you. What you are describing is highly uncharacteristic of the R20000G. You should be able to change multiple settings with the 'Reboot Later' option until you reach the last setting change. Keep in mind that all Amped Wireless products do have a 1-year warranty, if you feel you have a defective unit please give us a call to see about getting a replacement unit.

2 out of 5 eggsNot Impressed...

Pros: Easy it setup and has an easy wizard for people who don't know what they are doing.

Cons: says high power, but a cheap wireless that I owe does a better job.

Other Thoughts: higher price doesn't mean better in this case

5 out of 5 eggsNot intended Use?

Pros: So, I bought this ~week it was available via Newegg. I also bought the repeater SR20000G. I am in college and My apartment and my friends apartment is in the adjacent building. He has the repeater and I have the router. Together we split a 100mbps connection. The signal is astounding the 5ghz off the repeater pulls down around 60% of the speed at a distance of 80 feet(Line of Sight). I did have a problem with the first one but Amped was kind enough to send me a BRAND NEW one and not a replacement. The Dyndns settings in the router also makes WOL entertaining for my desktop,HTPC as well as hosting mumble servers and whatnot.
Oh and I can pick up signal as far away as 150 feet from the router and get some connection.

Cons: Occasionally when I ask it to make me dinner it tells me no.

Other Thoughts: this has massive range

5 out of 5 eggsHARDCORE COVERAGE!

Pros: Pros:
• Hardcore coverage!
• Easy setup
• Lots of features
• Dual band
• Guest networks
• Local and Internet USB sharing
• Good QoS options
• Very good firewall
• VLANs
• Static DHCP
• Ships with UPNP and WPS disabled (a good thing to have good security)
• DDNS

Cons: Cons:
• Somewhat slow USB transfer speed in comparison to direct USB connection
• No print server

Other Thoughts: Amped Wireless R20000G review

Intro: The R20000G was extremely easy to setup. 3 steps and in 2 minutes and I was online. It took another minute to configure my WiFi preferences and another for the router to reboot to complete that. All done in 5 minutes. The setup wizard is very well written and detailed.

Wireless performance: I got very good performance throughout my odd mixed construction house. My house was built and renovated through the 1910s the 1970s and a few years ago and it’s always a construction zone with materials ranging from thick plaster to drywall for the walls, lots of metal used in the dropped ceilings with fluorescent lights, thick staircasing, thick floors in some areas, and I got big metal doors. I get solid 5 bars within the confines of the house (1800sq ft) and 4-5 bars 34dBm @ 100% on my back porch and at the mailbox across the street I get 4 bars. I can even walk 100 some feet down the road and still stream videos in HD! I can walk around 200 some feet away and play SD videos. Reading for that: 225ft down the road from the R20000G about 3-4 houses down -67dBm @ 86%
Please note: These readings were taken with the Amped Wifi analytics tool from Google Play.

Xbox Live Performance: No disconnections! They played Dead Space 3 for 4 whole days. Also on Black Ops 2: Zombies the performance was excellent… maintained full green bars through hours of play! Both Xboxes were wireless.

USB Performance: Transfer rates were around 3.5-4.5MBps within the LAN and the same over the WAN.

5 out of 5 eggsGood Product

Pros: This wireless router does offer faster service than my older Netgear products. More wireless range too. The 5.0 ghz coverage is lightning fast. The 5.0 service compared to 2.4 is kind off like comparing Cellular LTE speed to 4G. Easy setup and interface.

Cons: I have a 2 story home and this device would be perfect if put in the center of the home. I am currently limited to where I can put it. Placement is key.

Other Thoughts: I recommend, but don't expect this device to work miracles. You will get better coverage, more range, but placement and channel selection are very important. The 5.0 frequency range is limited. Fast but limited. 2.4 range is very good.

4 out of 5 eggs2nd try update

Pros: This is a retraction of my previous review.
Error on my part and other equipment failure led to review error.
Unit works as advertised now for several days.

Cons: none currently.

1 out of 5 eggs2nd try

Pros: Support speaks english well

Cons: I got a quick replacement by Newegg.
This unit has very low output on 2.3ghz, same level as my Cisco, and NO output on 5ghz !
I have yet to hear from Amped about the first one.
Apparently they shipped a bunch of bad or untested units.

Other Thoughts: This is not a cheap version of their products...

Manufacturer Response:

We are sorry to hear about your negative experience with our router. This is not typical for our devices. If you have any issue with the replacement item, do not hesitate to contact us @ 888-573-8820

2 out of 5 eggsPoor quality, worked 20 minutes

Pros: Gave me the 10db increase I was looking for.
Instructions are decent.
Support was friendly, and spoke english well.

Cons: My unit was unstable, hit and miss to get through setup.
This was confirmed by their support person.
It took hours to get a case number.
I have yet to hear from them with an RMA, over a week !
Main problem is both wired and wireless disconnects for 6 seconds every few minutes... making it unuseable.

Other Thoughts: Perhaps I should return it to Newegg, and try another one.
I lack confidence that Amped will make it right in a reasonable time frame. They claimed at the time I talked to them that they were swamped with calls.
I certainly would not call their support "elite" !

Manufacturer Response:

We are sorry to hear about your negative experience with our router. We try very hard to provide the best support and service to all our customers and we are sorry to hear that you fell you did not get this kind of attention. If it is not too late send an email to techsupport@ampedwirless.com and we will make sure our Concierge can set you up for am RMA.

1 out of 5 eggsDissapointing

Pros: Gives a good boost ... When it works...

Cons: I bought this to eliminate the need for multiple WAPs in my house, and at first it seemed to work.

Every 2 or 3 days the router seems to freak out. It still seems to broadcast its SSID but connections to it fail. Devices already connected to it lose their internet access.

Other Thoughts: Instead of simplifying my wireless network arrangement, I have to keep my old WAPs online along with this WAP, making things more complicated.

Manufacturer Response:

We are sorry to hear about your negative experience with our router. It sounds like the connection to your ISP is dropping. You may not be using the proper cabling to the ISP modem. This model of router is Gigabit capable and needs the proper 8 wire cat5 connection. Verify the cable connecting your model to the router is using gigabit compatible 8 wire cat5.
