2 out of 5 eggsWell...

This review is from: Edimax EW-7822UAC Wireless AC1200 Dual-band USB 3.0 Adapter, Complies to Draft 802.11ac Standard, Delivers More Than Two Times Faster Wi-Fi Speed Than 802.11n, With Adjustable Foldaway Antenna for Optimum High Performance

Pros: Good strong speeds. Sort of.

Cons: This reincarnation of the adapter has issues that I didn't experience with the older version. It falls apart. Ordered two of them, they sat in a desktop case and still managed to fall apart. Like they open at the seams and get all kinds of wobbly.

Connections start off strong but begin to degrade if getting hammered on, like say in online games or real large downloads.

Other Thoughts: First gen version served admirably. This, not so much. Replaced them with another brand and have had none of the above mentioned cons.

Manufacturer Response:

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Performance for an Inexpensive 2T2R Adapter

This review is from: Edimax EW-7822UAC Wireless AC1200 Dual-band USB 3.0 Adapter, Complies to Draft 802.11ac Standard, Delivers More Than Two Times Faster Wi-Fi Speed Than 802.11n, With Adjustable Foldaway Antenna for Optimum High Performance

Pros: Cheap price and very good performance!

In 802.11ac USB network adapter tests on SmallNetBuilder, this adapter received almost as high a score as the top-performing 2T2R ASUS adapter, but at roughly half the cost.

It performed for me as advertised on a couple different Windows 7 x64 PCs, both on USB 2.0 and USB 3.0. It even worked perfectly using a 1m USB 3.0 extension cable.

I am able to do large file transfers, folder syncing, video streaming, etc. over Wi-Fi with zero issues.

Cons: As other reviews have stated, the included CD is not the best driver. Download the latest from Edimax's website.

The default driver settings are suboptimal (for example, beamforming is disabled by default), and need tweaking after installation (see Other Thoughts).

Other Thoughts: The driver settings that worked best for me at the maximum 867.0 Mbps were (on Advanced tab of adapter settings in Device Manager):
BeamCap = VHT BEAM TX|RX AND HT BEAM TX|RX
EnableAdaptivity = Disable
LdpcCap = VHT LDPC TX|RX AND HT LDPC TX|RX
QoS Support = Support QoS
StbcCap = VHT STBC TX|RX AND HT STBC TX|RX
USB SF Mode = Disable
WiFi Config = Performance
Wireless Mode = IEEE 802.11 ac

The documentation states that the speed will be reduced on USB 2.0 connections. This is expected, due to the bandwidth limits of USB 2.0.

My router is a NETGEAR R7000 running DD-WRT Kong.

Note to those having trouble connecting at all to 802.11ac routers: This could have nothing to do with your adapter at all, and merely require tweaking your router settings' channels or extension channels, especially if you have a static channel setup. This is a more technical topic, but if you google "802.11ac Poor Performance - Super User" there will be some helpful info about channels and troubleshooting. In my case, I experienced problems as others have described, did some tweaks on the router to use a higher channel group, and all is well now.

3 out of 5 eggsDriver Roller Coaster

This review is from: Edimax EW-7822UAC Wireless AC1200 Dual-band USB 3.0 Adapter, Complies to Draft 802.11ac Standard, Delivers More Than Two Times Faster Wi-Fi Speed Than 802.11n, With Adjustable Foldaway Antenna for Optimum High Performance

Pros: USB 3.0

Cons: Driver has significant impact on throughput and they can't seem to get it right

Other Thoughts: First off, don't just plug it in and let Windows install the default driver. I did that and got slower speeds on 80MHz channels than 40MHz channels. Then I went to the Edimax website and downloaded their latest driver. After about a half hour install, my computer presented a BSOD. After reboot, it seems the driver installed fine and I was able to get 300mbps+ real throughput. A couple weeks later, Windows overwrote the driver in a Windows update, back to the Edimax website I go. This time around the install was much quicker (~5 minutes), but the throughput wasn't there this time. I'm getting ~100mbps real throughput. I ended up installing the Intel 7260 in the same computer and get 400mbps+ real world. I think once they get the driver issues figured out, the unit will function fine, but an average user may not realize they should be getting the driver from the manufacturer rather than Windows and they also may not realize that Windows Update will overwrite the driver.

I'm running a Core i7 with 8GB of RAM and a 128GB Samsung 840 Evo SSD, the unit is plugged in to a USB 3.0 port that has verified higher throughput with other USB 3.0 devices so it doesn't appear to be the computer at all.

4 out of 5 eggsEdimax EW-7822UAC

This review is from: Edimax EW-7822UAC Wireless AC1200 Dual-band USB 3.0 Adapter, Complies to Draft 802.11ac Standard, Delivers More Than Two Times Faster Wi-Fi Speed Than 802.11n, With Adjustable Foldaway Antenna for Optimum High Performance

Pros: Good looking, sturdy, works great. Running on Win 7 64, and Linux Mint 16.
My Router is only N-300 but it holds it @ max speed no drops, rock solid connect in both OS's.
Fits snugley, securely into usb port.
This runs so much better than G I'm grinning, and I havent even got it on usb3 yet.
Seriousley I have been downloading linux OS's and it's fast !
My modem/router are on 2nd floor this is in 1st floor living room dealing with multiple lights, tv's dvd's dvrs other computers and no interference issues, I even occasionally talk on the ham radio and it just keeps a solid connect !!!
I have a Antec black case with white Led fans and blue action Leds, so the white/blue of this fits like a glove.
There is a flip style antenna for better range but it works for me either up or down.(its more like a flap).

Cons: No cap for the usb connector.
It fits good in front usb header but if connecting in rear ports (mobo) it will block at least 1 other port.
Getting it to run in Mint took some research and a little code adjusting(very minor)

Other Thoughts: Arrived Quick (2 days B4 ESD). Packaging was good.
Got it on sale ! It is white with blue Led, easy to see.
I had a usb cable from an older usb dongle and it works with that for rear usb port with no loss.(usb ports are at premium on my puter).
I have yet to try the usb3 functinality as this box is only 2, but that will change when i get my adap.card (shipping soon i hope)
Linux;
The most correct directions/code were in the Mint Help/Forum, several other helps/forums didn't quite get it right, but helped enough so i could figure out the needed adjustments... although the issue could be mint 16(Petra)64 was very new at time. The MFG site does have linux help.

2 out of 5 eggsDoesn't Work Properly

This review is from: Edimax EW-7822UAC Wireless AC1200 Dual-band USB 3.0 Adapter, Complies to Draft 802.11ac Standard, Delivers More Than Two Times Faster Wi-Fi Speed Than 802.11n, With Adjustable Foldaway Antenna for Optimum High Performance

Pros: Cheap for the tech specs. Provides USB 3.0 and AC1200 technology.

Cons: I'm hoping there's some remedies to my woes with this device so far. I had read about using the standard Win 8.1 driver and the QoS fixes prior to purchasing and thought I'd have some solid ground for quick remedies if I ran into trouble.

Unfortunately neither of these have fixed the problems I have. I've tried this device on 2 PCs running 8.1. So far, it will only connect on the 5.8GHZ band (which I find odd) and not the 2.4. When attempting to connect to the 2.4, it will either error out or report I have the wrong password (which I don't). When on the 5.8, it takes a while to connect then about 30s-2mins to get past limited connectivity on the wireless and be functional. When I get past that, it seems like it might work fine for a while and then intermittently stop functioning while under activity or disconnect.

I'm using an Asus RT-AC66U router which works beautifully with other devices on the network. The QoS is NOT enabled on the router either.

For the sake of trying, I reset the router to factory specs. It makes no difference.

Other Thoughts: I'd love to hear from Edimax on this problem. I'm going to try to reach out to their tech support. If I can get it fixed, I will update my review with a more favorable rating. I don't understand why a functional 8.1 driver hasn't been released instead of using what Windows comes with. I feel like that could solve a lot of these issues.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear tmazz,

We are sorry that you have issues with our EW-7822UAC.

You can go to the Control Panel, System and Securities, Windows Update. Check for the optional latest update. You may see our Edimax AC1200 driver. The latest driver is Dec 24, 2013 instead of the built-in Windows 8.1 driver dated on July 10, 2013 provided by Microsoft.

We do not receive your inquiry yet.

In case you have submitted the tech support form on our HQ Site (http://www.edimax.com) instead on our USA site (http://www.edimax.us) and you have not received any reply back, can you please contact our tech support at (408)988-6092 or write an email to " support@edimax.us " directly.

Pros: none yet

5 out of 5 eggsReally good adapter

This review is from: Edimax EW-7822UAC Wireless AC1200 Dual-band USB 3.0 Adapter, Complies to Draft 802.11ac Standard, Delivers More Than Two Times Faster Wi-Fi Speed Than 802.11n, With Adjustable Foldaway Antenna for Optimum High Performance

Pros: Great range, good speed, reliable connection.

Cons: Not worth taking off an egg for this but just a general FYI:

If you are using Windows 8.1 DO NOT use the windows drivers for this thing. As tempting as it may be to just plug it in, the windows drivers will slow the speed of this thing to a crawl after a while. You WILL NOT be happy with it, I promise.

Other Thoughts: I figured I would try this for a build I'm doing involving a makeshift Plex/TeamSpeak server running off WiFi.

Surprisingly pings are insanely low for everyone using my TS server... ...even while i'm streaming HD content to every TV in my house!

Plex content also buffers on all my Roku devices near instantly regardless of the media size and stream quality.

5 out of 5 eggsNo more Lag

This review is from: Edimax EW-7822UAC Wireless AC1200 Dual-band USB 3.0 Adapter, Complies to Draft 802.11ac Standard, Delivers More Than Two Times Faster Wi-Fi Speed Than 802.11n, With Adjustable Foldaway Antenna for Optimum High Performance

Pros: Great strong connection, and decent throughput.
Put this on my gaming desktop that I take around with me and never had an issue dropping connection or a bad connection.

Using windows 7 home 32-bit on i5-4670 and MSI board.

Cons: Drivers were hard to find online initially.

Other Thoughts: Haven't used at the higher frequency yet.
