Poor receiver
- Pros: Very versatile device that can work in all the ways as described. Would be the answer to several problems I have if reception was better.
- Cons: As a repeater, or access point, I am having very poor experience with this unit receiving signals from the originating wireless router(s). I mistakenly thought the wireless reception built into the unit would be at least as good as my laptop, but I can see many more available connections with better strength on my internal laptop adapter than with the Asus unit. One application I wanted to use it for was to connect an IP camera to my network. The camera is in the carport 30' away with one wooden wall between it and my wireless router. The connection to the Asus unit is marginal at best and much of the time loses connection altogether. As a repeater all I can say is place the unit as close to your router as possible and hope that it transmits well. In my experience it's not much use in extending range, only as a way to connect something to your network that's already in range.
- Other Thoughts: I am very disappointed with this unit's reception after all the promise it holds.
The Best!!!
- Pros: This is a solid little unit. Makes a great wireless adapter without taking up a pci slot. Great reception. Two walls, 20 feet, and another computer, and still delivers 10 meg on 10 meg service. If you want to connect your Direct TV DVR to the internet be sure to read my "Other thoughts". This works much better than the Big Name PCI WIRELESS ADAPTERS I have used.
- Cons: None really, but be sure to follow the directions on how to install and set up. It is not plug and play. I used Linksys Easy link Advisor to help with setting the adapter address and linking to my router. Its' graphical interface is great.
- Other Thoughts: It takes a little understanding of how network hardware works, and how to access and change adapter and router settings, but the directions are good, and once set up this little unit functions great . I used my unit as a wireless adapter for my Direct TV HD DVR to connect to the internet. This can only be done using a LAN port connection, to the DVR and this little unit does the job. I set it to "Adapter", using my computer to get my wireless router to see it, then switched it to the DVR. Then I used "setup" in Direct TV to connect to the internet. Far from "automatic", but the result was excellent. My computer showed a full 10 megs download speed. I connected to the internet to take advantage of the new "On Demand" feature of Direct TV. It turns out it sucks. No free movies of any kind. A complete waste of effort.
Connects my Bravia TV to the Internet
- Pros: Easy, easy, easy set-up.
- Cons: None yet.
- Other Thoughts: I set this up in 5 minutes and I know next to nothing about networks. I plugged it into my PC, went to the ASUS website, and designated the unit as an Access Point. Then I plugged it into my television. Immediately, the television had Internet access.
