* Maximum wireless signal rate derived from IEEE Standard 802.11g and draft 802.11n specifications. Actual data throughput will vary. Network conditions and environmental factors, including volume of network traffic, buildings materials and construction, and network overhead, lower actual data throughput rate. Environmental factors will adversely affect wireless signal range. Wireless range and speed rates are relative performance measurements based on the wireless range and speed rates of a standard Wireless G product. Maximum throughput based on draft 802.11n devices.

2 out of 5 eggsDisappointing

Pros: Good wireless N support. Prompt reply from Asustek support. Very fast free Newegg delivery.

Cons: Couldn't get Wireless G connections to work. N worked in Auto and N only but not Legacy. The manual didn't say anything about Access Point mode.

Other Thoughts: I was unable to get Auto or Legacy settings to work so my wireless devices that work well with our TP-Link B-G-N router to connect to the Asustek. I tried three different firmware versions but had the same problem. Also experienced the nonstop firmware upgrade light blinking. Maybe it knew something but wasn't talking. I emailed Asustek and they got back to me in a day or so. But the instructions referenced an option that's not available on my router. Essentially try this bios, hard reset, and give it a go.
I would hesitate to buy an Asustek product if I thought this was going to happen again. I've never had an issue with TP-Link.

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic little router

Pros: Duel Band / Runs cool once updated with Padavan Firmware
***VPN CLIENT WITH PADAVAN Firmware upgrade***
Good quality hardware especially for the price.
All this for for 20 bux after rebate!?!?!

Cons: Just as other eggers stated, the Asus firmware is pretty lousy and makes the router run hot with un-predictable speeds for the wireless.

Again, just as other have stated, the 5GHZ band is weak at best but 2.4GHz has enough power and range for everything else needed and will stream HD to your TV if it's not too far away say 20-25 feet max. Lower demand devices should be ok but to be fair, the antennas are small and internal so maybe I'm expecting way to much for my $20 purchase.

The stand itself is sturdy enough but it comes out of the slots way to easy. It could have been better thought out.

I give this 4 eggs only because the stock firmware NEEDS to be replaced with Padavan otherwise it would have been a 5 even with that cheesy stand.

Other Thoughts: If you catch this router on sale, BUY IT but make sure you dump the original firmware in favor of Padavan. Just google it, download it, and flash! You're done!

4 out of 5 eggsGood when it works

Pros: -Stylish looking router
-Capable of handling very fast internet speeds
-Nice user interface for setting up your home network.

Cons: -Had a lot of issues with stability in internet speeds upon arrival. Would get constant fluctuations between my max internet speed and 1.5Mbps all throughout the day. It was extremely frustrating.
-The router also kept telling me to download the latest firmware even though it already had the latest firmware(minor annoyance i know, but i just hated seeing the notification constantly)

Other Thoughts: Talked to customer service a few times via email and by phone. Ended up having to do a lot of resetting of the router and reinstalling firmware. It's been working well so far.

3 out of 5 eggsWould buy ASUS router again, but definitely not this one

Pros: Has lasted longer than other routers, very capable features, decent UI, constant firmware updates & fixes

Cons: Had an IPTV issue, but Asus fixed it.
Outer design is very bad - constantly separating from base and tumbling over, no mounting holes
Internal antennas are weak and the entire device must be positioned in a certain way else coverage is bad
Poor coverage spread in two story house
Very, very weak 5GHz band, so weak it is unusable

Other Thoughts: Next time I'll buy a more powerful Asus model with external antennas.

Dear Valued Customer,

Thank you for your time on posting this review, we are sorry to hear your experience with the ASUS router. Please allow me to assist you.

I know that you are somehow disappointed with the routers performance. Have you tried changing the router's settings like the 5GHz channel bandwidth or was the router's firmware up to date? Was the SSID of the 2.4 and 5GHz different from each other?

4 out of 5 eggsExactly what I wanted.

Pros: Replacing an ac750 Rosewill router that support said "must not be compatible" with my Arris SB6141. So far so good. Using just 5GHz and stock UI. No disconnects, adequate wifi speed, range is fine in my 1BR apartment. Unlike my Rosewill ac router, it works great with my Moto modem.

Cons: None yet.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat and cheap alternative.

Pros: - Works well
- No slowdown on the LAN connection. As a matter of fact, it was a tad bit faster than my TP-Link Archer C9 in LAN connection.
- Sleek design

Cons: - Range lacking
- All connections to the right of the router...
- Flimsy stand

Other Thoughts: This is a great router for a small home/room setting. I got this for 20 dollars during the sale and it really cannot get any better for the price. I live in a 2 story house where my living room (router second floor, living room first floor across from the router) is hard to reach even for an expensive router. The range is as expected (at least from what I expected). It's not as great as some of the expensive routers out there, but it does the job relatively well. In the living room mentioned, it gets a little signal, but internet is still there. Definitely not the signal for streaming, however. This is something that my more expensive router can do.

I purchased this as a backup router should my current router fails in the future. For 20 bucks, I will think of it as an insurance... after all, my family cannot live without the wireless internet even for a day.

5 out of 5 eggsLow cost, not overkill 11ac given my ISP is 110/10Mbps

Pros: No dorky antennas. Works well without, in 1700 sq ft 2.
UI is very good.

Cons: Cables exit on right side. I'd prefer bottom.

Other Thoughts: Great example of avoiding poor return on investment of 11ac routers..
Samsung S6 phone maxes out ISP speed one room away from router.

4 out of 5 eggsLike others, lost 5GHz in a couple months

Pros: 2.4GHz band is carrying our whole house
Looks stylish

Cons: 5GHz band was weak, died in a couple months

Other Thoughts: As other reviewers reported, I lost the 5GHz band in a couple months. But the remaining band is servicing our household well enough. It services a laptop, 2 tablets, 2 phones and a Kindle. Usually not more than 2 devices in use at once. It's been in service for over 1 1/2 yrs.

1 out of 5 eggsA piece of garbage....Their customer support just as bad. Newegg Customer support came through 5 Eggs for NewEgg

Pros: New Egg CS Thanks so much for the help...they care about customers where Asus does not.

Cons: Never worked out of the box....

Other Thoughts: I have worked on computers since 1978 and the call with Asus Customer support has to one of the worst experiences I have had.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Thank you for your time on posting this review, we are sorry to hear your experience with the ASUS router. Please allow me to assist you.

Can we have a detailed information about the router's issue? may I know the steps that you have tried to try to make the unit work? When you connect the power adapter and pressed the power button of the router how is the LED indicator of the router? was it lighting up? If you have a case number can I have a copy of it for me to check and review your record.

4 out of 5 eggsNight and Day

Pros: Snappy performance with Padavan firmware
Inexpensive dual-band router

Cons: Unbelievably bad stock firmware, even with current upgrades

Other Thoughts: I played around with this router and stock firmware, and was ready to send it back, but went ahead and tried Padavan - WOW! The difference was dramatic, I use a variety of iPhones, Androids, Dell and Lenovo laptops, iPads, and desktops, most of which use 2.4Ghz. I was using a Cisco E2000 router, and this one gives me much better download speeds in a two-story home, with ranges up to about 30 feet. I have only used this for a day, but strongly suggest using the Padavan firmware. There is a huge difference, not only in performance, but in the speed of moving through the administrative menus. So far, so good. I haven't used the other features yet, but am using this for my main wireless router. Speeds went from a variable 2 - 12 Mbps before the Padavan upgrade to a steady 45+ Mbps afterward, using a cable provider who promises 50 Mbps. My wireless download speeds are close to what I get coming off the wired ports. Also, the Padavan upgrade is simple, download the firmware, and upgrade easily through the admin menu. For the price, I can't imagine a better deal - only a Jackson after rebate. I would probably give this one star with the stock firmware, though, and five stars after the Padavan upgrade (so far, only used it for one day).
