The RT-N53 dual-band router is from the award-winning Black Diamond series of ASUS routers. The dual-band connectivity enables both 2.4GHz and 5GHz wireless transmissions. 5GHz makes content streaming incredibly smooth, which is especially useful when watching videos through Web sites like hulu or other high-definition media sites. 2.4GHz offers compatibility with most devices, and both transmissions can run simultaneously to deliver essential compatibility with performance. Featuring an exclusive built-in 2 internal antenna, the RT-N53 features Ai Radar, for omnidirectional circular coverage as opposed to a limiting horizontal signal for optimal connectivity wherever the router is placed, especially useful for multi-level houses or buildings.

With multi user support up to five SSIDs, connect up to four wireless networks on 2.4GHz and one wireless network on 5GHz. Customize each user's bandwidth and access privileges for each network. The RT-N53 router also features robust parental controls for you to set time and Web site access for each SSID. Product setup is CD free and quick. The Graphical User Interface (GUI) to customize settings is intuitive for users at any level. Boasting a standalone wall-mountable design, the RT-N53 router has a unique lattice glossy style that suits any room or office with a modern appeal.

  • newegg Dual-band Connection for Lag-free Entertainment The RT-N53 doubles your wireless performance and bandwidth with simultaneous 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands, with speeds up to 300Mbps concurrently. While basic internet applications like browsing or file downloading can occur in 2.4GHz, wireless HD content streaming takes place in the 5GHz band at the same time, so both achieve optimized speeds and you get to enjoy smooth, buffer-free HD content streaming.
  • newegg Optimal connections with two internal antennas The RT-N53 features two exclusive internal antennas with Ai Radar omnidirectional coverage which provides optimal connections wherever your device is placed.
  • newegg Multi User Support With multi user support up to five SSIDs, the RT-N53 can provide one wireless network on 5GHz and 4 wireless networks over the 2.4GHz band, which provides separated connection priorities and access rights. For example, High priority and both network (private and Internet) access are perfect for managers, while middle priority and private network work great for staff, and low priority and internet access only for friends and guests. Protect computers from unauthorized access, hacking and virus attacks.
  • newegg Plug-n-surf and Hassle-free Management ASUS QIS and EZ UI offer you an intuitive router setup without reading manuals. Open your browser, then the QIS wizard will guide you to quickly connect to the Internet, regardless of what OS you use. The intuitive user interface provides a graphical network map, making wireless setup, QoS and client management clear and simple.
  • newegg Clever Wall-mount design The clever wall-mount design allows you to mount it onto the wall providing great convenience for your cleanup (mounting kit sold separately).

5 out of 5 eggsTomato

Pros: Thank goodness it supports other firmware options. I put the Tomato firmware on this thing and all of the minor issues I had disappeared. It's beyond stable. My transfer rates have gone up tremendously from my previous router and I couldn't be happier. The Tomato firmware makes this thing truly sing!

Cons: The Asus firmware stinks! Google the Tomato firmware update it and be happy!

1 out of 5 eggsNo Product Quality Control At All

Pros: Good features at a good price.

Cons: This router did not work, it did not even turn on, it was dead right out of the box.

3 out of 5 eggsWell......

Pros: Extremely cheap and better than some I've seen for the under $40 range.

Better range than the older Asus one it replaced.

Cons: I have noticed some issue with the 5G coming and going as it pleases. Also this thing seems to hate my cell phone for some odd reason.

Other Thoughts: You really have to keep things in perspective when you buy something at this price range. I received a functional product and overall I am pleased however I had to put a tad more time into setting the thing up initially. I haven't put any 3rd party firmware in it yet and I too am also confused because this thing doesn't show in the DD-WRT database either. I wanted something a little better then what I had and this fits the bill. So please people don't go spending 15-20 dollars on this and complain that it has some issues. For that cheap of course there are probably problems!

For $20 this thing will probably buy me another 2-3 years of putting off buying something better. For that I am happy.

5 out of 5 eggsCool !

Pros: It works !
More than just basic configurations, which is nice for me as I like to tinker/experiment. I can see why so many seem to have problems though. Have to learn its idiosyncrasies as you go :)
I'm using about 20 feet line of sight 2 channel 5ghz with 2.4ghz turned off. Mostly hovers around -45db.

Cons: Seemed DOA, but after some time trying resetting and dripping some perspiration caused by stress, I pushed the WPS button and then suddenly as if magic wand have waved over it, the lights came on.
Couldn't get IP to access the router after I clicked that set as Access Point mode save. The modem didn't even assign it IP but the wifi worked? - So I reset and just manually configured as a typical access point - gave it lan ip and turned off wan and dhcp and cabled into a lan port from the dsl modem..

Other Thoughts: Hope it stays alive.. I really like it !

1 out of 5 eggsDon't buy refurb....

Pros: I like Asus but this was a mistake, I will never buy refurb again

Cons: it worked just past the 90 days and then it started to drop the 5G once a week or so. then I did a firmware update it worked a few weeks and same thing the n weekly dropouts again, this went on until another update came out it didn't fix it and it is a daily event now to reset the thing... and the whole thing drops now 2.4G 5G and wired every day!!! real wish they could fix this with a firmware update but i don't think they can I will buy a NEW Linksys as the one before this still works but I wanted to get wireless N speeds.

Other Thoughts: Sorry ASUS.... Love your Mobo's and laptops but won't get another router....

Manufacturer Response:

Dear James,

I certainly understand your concern with the router. I do apologize for any inconvenience this has caused you. Please try to return to the old firmware version, then hard reset the router and please create the new SSID/Wireless name for your 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequency. Please make sure that the SSID for 2.4GHz and 5GHz is different to avoid conflict. If you have other issue or concern, feel free to email me at customerloyalty@asus.com and place case # N150530541 in the subject line for a reference.

Manuel

1 out of 5 eggsHorrible Router, Worse Service

Pros: None

Cons: Read the other reviews. Wish I had. Router causes network interference on wired and wireless LANs and routinely locks up after less than a day of use with ANY of their firmware. RMA process was a nightmare. Over a dozen responses back and forth with ASUS, many repeating what already had been said. Finally, they claimed the warranty expired 3 DAYS after the purchase date. Everything about this company is one big bad FRAUD. Go elsewhere.

Other Thoughts: Can't believe NewEgg still carries anything from ASUS. Terrible company!

Manufacturer Response:

1 out of 5 eggsAbsolute garbage.

Pros: None.

Cons: Dual band, but the 5G Band is awful. ASUS actually had the nerve to claim that my device was out of warranty, despite it only being with me for a month! It comes with a 90 day warranty.

Customer service wanted $56 to fix an IN WARRANTY router. They also wanted me to send it out and be without a router for two weeks, which is impossible in this day and age. We have a ton of devices that connect wirelessly.

ASUS makes horrible products, and their customer service are not only liars, but they're inept. Avoid this company.

Other Thoughts: Frauds. Avoid them like the plague.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Dylan,

We want to thank you for your effort in posting this review. I understand that you have issue with the 5Ghz wireless connection of the router. I want to apologize for the inconvenience this issue have caused you. I know how frustrating it is to have an issue and tech support can't help you, it happened to me with my ISP. If you can please check the SSID for 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz make sure their different from each other. If you havetried this, can you please do a hard reset on the router and do not update the firmware version yet. Observe your connection for a few days. For further assistance please email me at customerloyalty@asus.com and put case # N150333546 in the subject line for your reference.
