1 out of 5 eggsjunk

Pros: Will not post in any computer, windows or Linux

Cons: I couldn't test it due to it not working

Other Thoughts: The idea behind it is awesome. Was going to use this for an untangle, pfsence, smoothwall box, but now am forced to eat the return shipping... joy

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

Perhaps the card was not installed by the system properly.

Did you check if your motherboard has any current BIOS updates?

Have any recent system updates been applied?

Also check that the PCIe slot is clean and clear of any dust or debris.

For any other help please contact Syba support.

Thank you for purchasing one of our products, and for leaving us your valuable feedback.

5 out of 5 eggsFull-Duplex Gigabit

Pros: Upgrades to a network card that truly supports gigabit transfer rates. The conventional 32-bit, 33 MHz PCI bus, on a D945GSEJT for example, is limited to a maximum transfer rate of 133 MB/s or 1.064 Gbit/s. 1.064 Gb/s sounds like "gigabit" ethernet, right? But wait, recall Gigabit ethernet is bi-directional (i.e. full-duplex) and runs at 1.0 Gb/s in EACH direction. It means, in reality, a gigabit card operates at 2.0 Gb/s and needs to be paired with a capable bus to prevent bottlenecks. The mini-PCIe is a 2.5 Gb/s bus that truly supports full gigabit rates. This card is easy to install, auto-detected by *BSD, allows my router to fully utilize gigabit rates and is reliable.

Cons: None so far.

3 out of 5 eggsseems to work, but beware...

Pros: Low cost way of adding a nic to your system. Recognized easily by Windows, but doesn't seem to be usable by Ubuntu 13.10 (probably need to add a new driver)

Cons: My motherboard has two Mini PCI-e slots. One is a short slot, and directly above that is a long slot. This nic will not fit into the short, bottom slot because the set of pins that the wires attach to stick down beneath the nic too far and will touch the motherboard when the card is seated. Also, the wires attach to the top of the nic in a way that prevents the installation of any cards above it.

So, what I'm saying is, this nic has to be installed in the long, upper Mini PCI-e slot, however its a short card and there is no bracket included that allows it to mount in the long slot. I had to buy that separately.

One last problem: some of the wires that connect the nic to the RJ45 bracket are solid core wires, and one wire broke during a gentle install because the wires are so stiff. I had to solder the wire back to make it work.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

Please note that due to the chipset limitation there is currently no support for Ubuntu.

This card should slot into a short mPCIe slot and allow for the cables to be moved for more

expansion.

4 out of 5 eggsSimple, works, no low profile bracket

Pros: Very simple setup.
Common Realtek chipset is well supported.
Inexpensive way to add a NIC to a slot-limited motherboard.

Cons: No low profile bracket.
Pin block attachment looks and feels homemade.
Cables from the card to the brackets aren't very long, though they are sufficient for my purpose.

Other Thoughts: I bought this for a small Atom-based mini-ITX computer firewall as a third NIC. The case I am using happens to has full height brackets, but for small cases the lack of a low profile bracket might be an issue.

Looking at the wires, it wouldn't be difficult to run a network cable directly into block on the mini-PCI card itself, if that's the sort of thing you're into.
