1 out of 5 eggsSonic wall TZ

Pros: set up was OK

Cons: Now owned by DELL service contract that I paid extra for is worthless waste of money. No clear English spoken. Each month it go's down and after 3hrs and many changes were back up. But every month! Its crazy. I will be looking for another firewall when my extended contract is up. Its typical DELL sales are good service is horrid

Other Thoughts: Look at other options, a company who has true American speaking service techs

5 out of 5 eggsGet this for your Small Business!

Pros: Easy to setup if you have prior experience with general off-the-shelf linksys, netgear, buffalo routers.

This is a major upgrade over those regular routers you find at your local retail store.

This thing protects your organization from a vast number of network threats!

Cons: Easy to configure, but you may need to google some of the not so common features that are available in the firmware.

Only 1 SSL VPN License included, but has them for $40 so not a big deal.

Other Thoughts: Purchase the licenses from, I found them to have much better prices than sonicwall and other websites. We paid $320
for 3yr comprehensive Gateway Security Suite which covers most of the licenses you should be using. We also got the 3yr SonicWALL Enforced Client Anti-Virus & Anti-Spyware for $298 (5-user). That makes this purchase roughly $300/yr including the price of the router if you only use it for 3yrs.

That's a very cheap price to pay to protect your small business network of 5-users or less.

Make sure you configure it properly, if you don't know what you're doing, then hire an IT professional. The firewall is only good if it's configured properly. One wrong open port or weak password and you open the door for hackers.

5 out of 5 eggsEasy to set up

Pros: - Good brand reputation for security
- easy wizards for noobs like me

Cons: no cons that I can see..

Other Thoughts: I'm not an expert in firewalls and networking. The setup wizards worked very well, and made it possible for me to set up this firewall on my fixed IP domain network. I was able to save the important info from my dying Netgear, so I had all the IP's, etc. that I needed to input. I also ran a wizard that allowed me to easily set up ftp access to one of my network servers. It couldn't have been easier! I was very impressed with the firmware and interface, etc.

I was sick of crud Netgear hardware burning out after only months, or a year. I'm hoping this lasts longer. I had a Sonicwall a few years ago that lasted probably 8 years, so I'm hopeful.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat router.

Pros: Great router for small + medium sized businesses.
Highly configurable to handle any scenario.
Very reliable.
Nice add-on features/services for web monitoring/filtering, IDS/IPS, etc.
Multitude of VPN capabilities including smartphone VPN client apps.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: You get what you pay for, it's worth spending more for business class equipment for use in a business environment over consumer/home equipment.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat SOHO device

Pros: Uses the same quality SonicOS as it's predecessor TZ-100. Reasonably easy to configure as a standard router inside a DSL or Cable internet connection. Extremely configurable outside of the standard information needed. I have one of these configured with multiple LAN's; a business network, and an isolated network for our lab.

I have deployed about 100 of these units (TZ-100/TZ-105) for various clients and purposes, and have only had one issue (see below). I would recommend these for anyone who is tired of replacing those junk consumer units every couple years. I have a couple clients using the TZ-100 on a 35 station network with 20Mbps internet with no issues.

Not a CON because of the quick resolution, but one of these newer TZ-105's for our customer burned up a power pack. SonicWall had the replacement to us the next day, so not going to take away an egg for that. (Uses the same power pack as the TZ-100 series, and out of over 100 units deployed, this was the only one that has failed.)

Cons: SonicWall owned by DELL now, so hard to say long term if the quality will hold up down the road. So far, support hasn't changed much, so kudos there. But Dell scares me with their ongoing quality issues in their business PC area, so I can only hope that they do not change their manufacturing or design processes to be like their PC products.

Other Thoughts: This device, like most other SonicWall devices is highly configurable. Venturing outside the capabilities of the wizards (which help you with basic tasks only) will require more than entry-level knowledge of network protocols, routing, etc. As far as what this device can do, it is comparable to the capabilities of equivalent Cisco devices, but at a much lower price in most cases.

I have been using SonicWall for all of my Small Business installations ever since the quality of the Linksys RV042 went to heck (about 3 years~), and have found them to be quite reliable.
