2 out of 5 eggsNot good to use with Smart TV's

Pros: Some may say "you get what you pay for" especially with this router. I bought this to use at my mother's house and was hoping for something simple. I originally was using my old linksys router there and it was working just fine for what I needed. I wanted to change out the Linksys for something else and put this inexpensive TP-Link TL-R402 in its place. All the TP-Link router had to do was take the internet from the cable modem and then go 10' to a PC computer and 10' to a Smart TV. I used the same settings as the Linksys with the TP-Link router. The TP-Link router would keep dropping the internet to just the Smart TV a few times a night making it very annoying watching TV.. The computer internet would be just fine. We would have to power down the router and TV to get this going again. I even tried calling the TP-Link customer service line for help and the Asian women was not that helpful. I finally put the Linksys router back in line and everything is working great, the Smart TV stays on the internet 24/7.. Conclusion, don't use this router for a Smart TV.

1 out of 5 eggsJunk

Pros: Got my money back in 3 days time for just plain being unsatisfied with the product. WENT BACK TO MY OLD ANCIENT LINKSYS HARD WIRED ROUTER, that I had thought was bad but turns out it just needed reset back to default.

Cons: The thing would NOT disconnect instantly from the world of warcraft web site and would just set there and set there and after about 45 seconds would finally DC. I tried everything including contacting manufacture. and they were rude and figured it was because I had built my own system. All other hard wired routers did as they were commanded. A DC happened instantly. So go figure that one out. WENT BACK TO MY OLD ANCIENT LINKSYS HARD WIRED ROUTER, that I had thought was bad but turns out it just needed reset back to default.

Other Thoughts: Stop sponsoring sub-standard to broken products that have rude support and who are convinced that it is YOUR fault that their equipment does not work as they intend it to work. WENT BACK TO MY OLD ANCIENT LINKSYS HARD WIRED ROUTER, that I had thought was bad but turns out it just needed reset back to default.

1 out of 5 eggsJUNK !!!!

Pros: Cheap, nice specs & utility, if it worked, however ....

Cons: Mine was/is defective, drops 49% of pings from LAN to router itself (ping -q -c 1000 <routet-IP>), i.e. 1 per sec. Flood ping failed badly as well .... I will be RMA-ing as of Monday, already bought a more $$$$, hopefully better reliability replacement, we'll see how that goes ....

Other Thoughts: Would have been nice if it worked, nice specs, etc., but mine was a dud .... We'll see how the RMA goes ....

4 out of 5 eggsworks fine for the money

Pros: cheap, once it's locked and rocking it's solid.

Cons: Often, if the router is connected to a machine before the router is started I may have to renew the address of the router to connect through to the modem.

3 out of 5 eggs99% of the time it works all the time

Pros: Cheap, does basic routing well

Cons: Ping drops. If you do a ping test on it from a popular testing website, it will drop 1-2 of the 200 pings. Have gone round and round with TP-Link on this one, and it's the router. Problem seems to come up sometimes when loading sites. If you hit a page request at just the wrong time, the page load will time out. Frustrating to say the least.

Other Thoughts: If you want a basic, cheap router and are not a power user, this will do just fine. I am not that, however. I was just looking for the cheap aspect.

1 out of 5 eggsNot worth the aggrevation

Pros: cheap

Cons: I had this unit connected to a Netgear router, so I could have 1 computer NAT'ed off my home network (for security reasons). This unit kept losing it's IP address - easiest solution was to reboot it about once a day. After a few months, the unit lost it's IP permanently. Not worth the hassle to sort out why.....

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Customer,

Thank you for checking out our Router. We appreciate your review.

In a set up like this; assigning a static ip address to the WAN of the TP-Link would be beneficial. This way you wouldn't have to worry about it loosing it's ip or worry about the DHCP lease time.

If you are still having issues then feel free to contact me directly at howard.he@tp-link.com.

Best Regards!

1 out of 5 eggsJunk

Pros: None

Cons: Smoke signals would be more reliable....

Other Thoughts: This thing has not worked for 1 hour straight, at all. Drops packets every 2 min, locks up, slow down ALL the systems on the router..

And yes, I did all the normal trouble shooting stuff...

Flat out trash, will never by this brand again

Manufacturer Response:

Dear customer,
We apologize for any inconvenience caused.
May I know what Internet connection you're currenting using?
Most ISPs in US are cable or DSL connections. Our routers has no compatibility issue on the majour ISP lines.

We would like to work with you to figure it out.

2 out of 5 eggsNot a very good router

Pros: • Cheap
• Easy to set up
• Amusing Engrish error messages
• Fast Mostly works

Cons: • Will not pass traceroute and there is no way to make it.
• Limited to 99 DHCP addresses
• Loses packets now and again

Other Thoughts: Bought this to replace for an aged Linksys BEFSR41. Was surprised to find out that it will not pass traceroute. I could have lived with the other shortcomings. Ended up re-tasking an old PC with 2 NICs instead. You get what you pay for. Maybe I will try and load WDDRT on it and see if I can salvage the albeit minor investment. If you need a fully functional router, don't buy this model.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear customer,
We are sorry to hear the router could not give you expected features and performance.
The DHCP range is adjustable.
But for the R402M, we don't recommend customers use it as a small business router.
We recommend the TL-R470T+/TL-R480T+/TL-ER5120 instead if the clients are more than 20.

4 out of 5 eggsInexpensive and Works

Pros: Does as advertised.

Cons: Not plug & play. Needs some work to set up.

Other Thoughts: Westell modem must be changed to "bridge" mode for this to work. You also have to know your WAN type (PPOE, etc.)
