3 out of 5 eggscant wake from sleep

Pros: The only mini pci wireless n card in existence. It is also very cheap. Well packaged.

Cons: Being very generous with the 3 eggs here. I like the sleep function on my classic ibm t30 and this card breaks it in windows xp sp3. Have tried all the tips and tricks to get it to work with no luck.

Other Thoughts: considering going back to my old card, but fortunately I only use this computer as my secondary computer at my office desk, so I don't use the sleep function very often.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat for the price

Pros: Delivers fast N speeds
Compared to the card that I.B.M said was the only one that would work in my Think Pad T42 and it saved me a lot of money,

Cons: Did Not come with the user manual they said was in the box
So I had to guess at what ant wire went where and How to set up the card.

Other Thoughts: Aside from my small problem installing & setting it up I would recommend this to to every one including I.B.M Think Pad owners, By doing some research on the web I found out that I.B.M blocks all cards not sold by them so you are forced to buy from them at a much higher price if the cards device id does not match in your laptops bios you get a 1802 Unauthorized network card is plugged in message. There are many ways of bypassing this lock, I just used a small bios mod and I am now able to use any card that fits.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Card once I solved the waking from Sleep issue

Pros: This card is much faster than the card I had to replace. The price is right, considering it is one of the few mini PCI adapter left on the market (Sept. 2012)

Cons: Drivers did not load directly from the supplied disk.
Had to Download the drivers twice, first download was corrupt.
Computer had Major Issues when waking from sleep, RAM and CPU were max'ed out trying to power the card back up or something......

Other Thoughts: I purchased this card completely aware of the waking from sleep issues others were having. However, the waking from sleep issues were really getting on my nerves! Thought I would be OK with just restarting the computer everytime I walked away from it, but it just wasn't doing it for me.

After some research and trial and error. The key to solving the Waking from sleep for me was to turn off the Power Management option in Windows "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power". I turned this off and now my computer wakes up and is ready to use!

After fixing a couple glitches getting the drivers installed and Fixing the Waking from Sleep issue, this has been a good card to extend the life of my completely obsolete laptop

To those that are having issues installing the drivers in Windows Vista or 7, remember to open and run them using "Troubleshoot compatibility"

I gave it 4 stars because it's low price and that I was able to resolve it's issues

3 out of 5 eggsProblems with Gateway MX64XX Series

Pros: Much faster than my 54G card. Physically fits just fine.

Cons: Sometimes it doesn't work. Same issue as User: Replica9000 - 07/11/12.

Other Thoughts: So the card shows it is REV 2 of this model, which uses the Atheros 9002 series chip (AR9223 printed on chip), the old REV 1 seems to have used the Atheros 5416 chip (5008 series).

Problem is, when I boot my laptop, the chip sometimes reports itself as the 9223, and sometimes as the 5008 - which it won't work. So I have to reboot several times until it reports itself correctly. Laptop is a Gateway MX6422 which had a Broadcom 4318 54G previously installed, OS: XP SP3 Media ED. So far tech support is not helpful but is attempting to fix the issue (tech support is in Asia or does not understand English well).

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

We apologize for the troubles you are experiencing with the TL-WN861N. It is very strange that it reports two separate models. We will look into this and see if there is a compatibility issue with that device on some hardware that we are not currently aware of after testing.

Otherwise, this sounds like it could be a faulty device, and we would be glad to assist you with an RMA replacement process.

Please feel free to contact us if you would like to speak to one of our technicians about this.

Thanks for supporting TP-LINK!

Best Regards!

5 out of 5 eggsMini PCI wifi card

Pros: Fit great into older Dell 700m Notebook. Worked under Windows 7 with included driver. Worked with Ubuntu 11.10 boot disk with no additional drivers.

Cons: No native (certified) driver for Win7, but still OK

Other Thoughts: Much easier to setup than the old Broadcomm card. Should have replaced the card earlier. Now Ubuntu can be installed on the old Dell 700m

3 out of 5 eggsGreat, when it works.

Pros: Much faster than my 54G card. Physically fits just fine.

Cons: Sometimes it doesn't work. RMA'd the first one, replacement has same issue.

Problem happens both under Linux and Windows.

3 out of 5 eggsWorked but caused problems

Pros: Installed easily in a Dell B120 that still has XP installed. 300mps was available. Worked very well.

Cons: When resuming from hibernation my laptop would be pegged at 100% CPU usage rendering it unusable. No problems encountered if it was shutdown then restarted. When I went to remove the card to prove my theory, one of the antenna connectors fell off(not broke off) the card(yes I know you must be extra gentle when messing with those tiny connectors and I was) Oh well, there went that.

Other Thoughts: Anyway, the results of the test were the card(probably the drivers) were causing the problem as the reinstall of the original Dell 1370 b/g card caused no problems.
System is back to normal.

5 out of 5 eggsQuick, easy and cheap! Do it!

Pros: This adapter is definitely worth the upgrade at a mere $22. I replaced an old Broadcom BCM94309MP 54a/b/g adapter in an oldie-but-goody Dell Inspiron 8600. (Hard-pressed to give it up as it still has the awesome 1920x1200 screen on it. Hard to find a new laptop with that.)

The Broadcom adapter has always served me well. But I just upgraded to the BEASTLY ASUS RT-N66U "Dark Knight" so the new card became necessary.

I can report that this Atheros-based adapter works perfectly with the Broadcom-based RT-N66U. I am in a different room where my laptop sits approximately 7m/23' away from the RT-N66U. It shows a solid, full-strenght 130 Mbps link speed in the Windows 7 task manager and transfers an ISO file on the LAN at around 7-8 MBps. (Pay attention. That's MegaBytes. Not Megabits.)

For wireless, that's pretty good.

Definitely can't complain for $22.

Cons: Windows 7 threw a single "IRQL_Less_Or_Not_equal" BSOD at me immediately following the installation of the native Microsoft drivers for the Atheros chip. The system dumped and then rebooted. (As usual.)

After rebooting, the system seemed just fine on a normal boot. I haven't had any trouble after extensive testing.

I chalk it up as a random fluke. But I installed the most "recent" drivers from TP-LINK's site just the same.

The driver page asks you if you have the v1 or v2 model. This one is a v2 model as indicated at the end of the FCC ID on the label of the card itself. (Doubt you'll get a v1 from any retailer at this point.)

I say "recent" with a little trepidation as the drivers haven't been updated since mid to late 2009. The drivers downloaded from the TP-LINK site are also not WHQL-certified. (Not that most of us honestly care so much about that, really. Just thought it worth noting.)

Works fine, though. WPA2 encryption is supported.

Other Thoughts: The box the card comes in is tiny: 6½"W x ¾"H x 4"D

NewEgg seems to think that it needs to use a box large enough to fit about 20 of them, though. They pack in plenty of paper around the product to fill the space. I find this rather wasteful. (Note to NewEgg staff: You guys really ought to re-evaluate your packaging procedures for the sake of efficiency and conservation.)

In this box you get a couple of advertisement inserts for other TP-LINK products and a "Resource CD" with the drivers for the card.

The "Resource CD" is the same size as a Gamecube game disc. LOL!

I just thought this was a little interesting.
