3 out of 5 eggsAcceptable after adjusting

Pros: Works acceptably after firmware update
metal case
simple design
Price

Cons: Setup webpage is pathetic and tedious, completely sad that you have a separate page for IP addressing and DHCP, requires advanced knowledge with the little directions they sent.
Throughput was only 70Mbps before firmware update, which is horrid. The firmware shipped should allow what the specs say.

After firmware update 111Mbps throughput

Other Thoughts: Minus one egg for throughput issues
Minus one egg for setup/design of webpage.

ASUS and Linksys/Cisco have their specs ironed out, apparently TP-Link does not...

2 out of 5 eggsDO NOT PURCHASE

Pros: When it works, it works great.

Cons: You should not have to power cycle a router every 5-7 days to maintain functionality.

Other Thoughts: The problems started right before the end of the Extended Network Return period (Not the fault of Newegg!). The TP-Link Customer service is somewhat spotty, as is the documentation. I have a stable, static connection (fiber optic) to my ISP that has never had so much as a flicker. Then I installed this VPN Router in my network. As said above, you should not have to power cycle your router every few days. The firmware has been updated, without change to the problem. I thought to save some money when expanding my business, but I guess I will go back to Cisco.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat unit for the money

Pros: - fast
- very clear and intuitive configuration UI
- decent logging options
- DMZ
- metal case acts like a heatsink -- unit runs cool
- painless firmware updates

Cons: none so far

Other Thoughts: I purchased this to replace an aging D-Link DGL-4100, which suddenly started giving me problems recently. This unit seems pretty well-made for the price, and reminds me of what Netgear was like 20 years ago, when they made good stuff. Indicator lights aren't as bright as most others are, which is a good thing. Data throughput is great -- I saw a 10 mbs download increase and a 5 mbs upload increase to my broadband speeds by replacing my old router with this and no other changes - seriously! I am running a gigabyte 8-port switch, a LinkSys WRT54GL (acting as a WAP only), a Roku 3 via a Netgear wireless bridge, 2 laptops, 2 servers, a Samsung ethernet laser printer, and a Verizon Network Extender through this and the switch. With media streaming on my server, Roku, and massive downloads via uTorrent, this router purrs like a kitten. For the price, I would consider this an outstanding value for the money. So far very stable with latest firmware. Less than 20 minutes to configure -- the UI is simple, but well organized, easy to understand and navigate. Recommended.

2 out of 5 eggsGreat Router but missing one important feature

Pros: Easy to install

Cons: missing one important NAT feature. 1-to-1 NAT. I searched high and low for an off the shelf router that could do 1-to-1 NAT and was told by TP Link tech support that the TL-R600VPN router supported this NAT functionality but come to find out it does not.

This was a waste of my money and time.

Other Thoughts: If I would have been informed correctly, I would have purchased the correct router...now we are behind schedule on a small business project with an unhappy customer. Waste of my time and money.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Customer,

We are sorry for any inconvenience that this product may have caused.

Unfortunatly this doesn't have 1-to-1 NAT but you will find that the ER6020 does.

4 out of 5 eggsVery good for SOHO users

Pros: Performs very well - both the wife and I noticed an improvement to the overall connection speed to our ISP over our previous cheap, off-the-shelf wifi/router combo. We can now run simultaneous HD video streams while also browsing the web, playing games, and everything else, and this thing doesn't even break a sweat.

Gigabit ports for both WAN and LAN are very nice as well, even though I'm not really taking advantage of the WAN side.

The one feature that made me choose this router over others is the integrated power supply. We have enough wall warts around the house, so being able to plug in directly to the wall is a nice feature.

The focus on security in this device is nice also, with many more options related to the built-in SPI firewall than other home routers, and offers many other VPN related items (I don't currently have any VPNs set up so I can't comment on how well they work).

The router is very easy to set up, and (when you have a working device) gets connected quickly with little effort. The web management interface is quick, and works (somewhat) well on any recent web browser.

Cons: The web interface suffers from some bugs, the most annoying of which is some of the buttons tend to jump around when you hover over them. There are also miscellaneous misspellings, and some of the terminology used for a few of the settings is awkward. Much like other devices in its class, 90% of the settings require a reboot to take effect, and a reboot takes around 60sec. Upon initial setup, this gets annoying. The newest firmware added an option to skip the reboot, so you can make multiple changes and then do one reboot to apply so this isn't as much of a problem.

The NTP settings can be very finicky, and the daylight savings time option is strange in that it takes up to 2 minutes before it will actually apply. At first I didn't realize this and couldn't understand why it kept saying "Daylight savings time is down" when the checkbox had been checked and the config saved. It defaults to China Standard Time, and my ISP refused to connect until I had manually adjusted the time settings so consider doing this before you hook up to the Internet.

The only thing I wish was present on this device was IPv6 support. There are very few wired VPN routers in this price range that offer IPv6, but I hope a future firmware update will add this functionality.

Other Thoughts: First bought this in January 2014. Initially I was very unimpressed with how the device performed and I had a heck of a time getting it to connect to my ISP. It also seemed to reboot at strange times. I initially thought the Feb. 2014 firmware update might fix this problem, but this only had the effect of completely breaking WAN-side DHCP (what my ISP uses). Luckily I was able to still RMA with Newegg, and I received a replacement with a total turnaround time of two weeks.

The replacement runs significantly better and I haven't experienced any of the problems I had with the original one, so it appears the original was a lemon. With the latest firmware update applied, I am very happy with both its feature set and performance.

For those that are curious, both my original and the replacement were the V2 hardware version.

5 out of 5 eggsGood

Pros: Works great

Cons: I have been working with this stuff for years and even I found this a little frustrating to set up but I got it up and running fairly quickly and have not had to touch it for any reason since I set it up!

5 out of 5 eggsNot Bad

Pros: Never had a lock up on this device. The initial firmware version has some port mapping limitations, but subsequent updates by the vendor has resolved it, so I am happy. It is very fast and has decent options. The built in power supply and decent metal case is a nice departure from the wall of wall warts.

Cons: None so far.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Cheap Router

Pros: Good cheap router with VPN. Was fairly reliable. Better than the Netgear it replaced. Nice WebGUI with a lot of options. Better than most low cost routers.

Cons: Cheap router = not the best stability. Still better than most others in this price range. VPN is handy and secure and not too big of a PITA to set up.

1 out of 5 eggsThis 1 is Useless!

Pros: Exterior case is nice. Access interface is fine.

Cons: Will not connect to Service Provider.
Replace a very low cost Trend Net Router and 100GB switch with this unit to gain the GB speed and have everything in one package. While the router seems to recognize the service provider, it never once obtained a connection. Unplug / re-plug / resets all with no result. Service provider confirms they do not receive a request although the 600VPN tells me it is trying to do so.
The older router went back in place - BANG! Full connection and function. Looks like my unit is a throw away!

5 out of 5 eggsSolid Stable

Pros: I have been using this for ~8 months now with no issues at all. I have never had to reboot. Has a nice sturdy metal case with built in power supply. Appears well made.

Cons: None, possibly VPN throughput but that is only theoretical since I have never used that feature
