3 out of 5 eggsNot what I thought

Pros: Looks cool
Easy to setup and change settings
Has a USB storage feature

Cons: The range on this router is not good. My old netgear router from Comcast had much better signal range then this router. I purchased to replace my netgear which was dying on me, I purchased a TP-Link USB wireless adapter and had amazing success with it so I thought I would give the router a try. Nope, would love to send back but don't have the box or anything like that.

I updated the firmware from the website, adjusted the antennas and made sure they were all the way on. Get roughly 20-30% less signal with this router.

Other Thoughts: Pick something else.

2 out of 5 eggsGot two of these

Pros: Well built, good value for the features. So so wireless range (don't have much of a benchmark to compare, but surrounded by concrete and almost no other wifi signals). No significant degradation over time (not that it helps in this case).

Cons: WDS wireless extending was never stable. On any firmware. Constantly needed rebooting, seemed to constantly runs hot.

Frustrating feel like I wasted $200 for a solution that never really worked. Always ended up turning off extended router to fix network. Wireless routers seems to be a gamble regardless of price, you never know reliability today or a year from now.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Router

Pros: I am streaming movies from Netflix in HD. The TV is thirty feet from the router and there are three wall in between. The picture is excellent and no re-buffering.

Cons: The small disk is hard to use in a slot drive.

2 out of 5 eggsGot RMA, still a bad router

Pros: When this router functions, it is fast. Supports DD-WRT.

Cons: There is some sort of flakiness with wireless connections. The connection will cut out for a second on most devices, especially under load. This happened with 2 units and with stock and DD-WRT firmware. Unfortunately, DD-WRT bridges are badly affected by this, and they don't instantly reconnect. Cycling power on the bridge reconnects, or waiting an hour or so the bridge will reconnect. Multiple bridges that work on other AP's have this problem, and different firmware on AP and bridge do not fix.

First unit was defective. It took OVER 2 months to get it RMA'd due to TP-Link's horrible customer service. When you call in they will give you endless 'troubleshooting' tasks to get you off the phone. If they tell you to try something and email them, you'll get a generic response 3-5 days later that indicates they did not read your email. They seem to do this endlessly, and they don't log calls or track incident numbers. Pro tip: Since TP-Link doesn't track your calls or log incident numbers, if you know your device is broken then tell them that you have called repeatedly and already tried every task they give you. If you stick with this for about 10 minutes they will finally put you in the RMA queue and a week later you'll get an email with instructions about how to get an RMA number.

Other Thoughts: See previous review for more details about RMA. This router would probably work as a stand alone unit with some random dropped connections, but will not work with wireless bridges.

Modest wifi signal. At 30 ft through 2 interior walls, 5ghz is 2 bars but still >2MB/s. 2.4Ghz is a little weaker than the last 2 non-N router's I have had, but still easily covers a 2000 sqft house.

3 out of 5 eggsFactory firmware is horrible

Pros: The hardware is great and I bought it for cheap.

Cons: Factory firmware is not so great. It requires a reboot on just about every single change I make. Why does it require a reboot just to do a DHCP reservation?

Other Thoughts: When I bought it, I read about people saying to go with openwrt because it makes it so much better. I ran with the default setting and it seemed to work fine so I decided to leave it that way. After a year, it started having problems with my android phones and tablets being able to stay connected on the wireless. My 4G was more stable than the router's wireless! I even updated the firmware to the latest one from TLP's website and the problems still existed. After upgrading to openWrt, I haven't experienced anymore issues. I should have upgraded a long time ago! On top of that, I DON'T have to reboot after every change! Buy this for the hardware and then change to openWrt, you will not regret it!

4 out of 5 eggsTP-LINK TL-WDR4300

Pros: Great router with many options and should be fine for most users. Has very good range, nice exterior and lights to monitor the network traffic.

Cons: It's big! I built a nice box which is attached to the side of my PC desk and this was the first router that did NOT fit inside it.

Other Thoughts: I deducted 1 egg for some random drops. It was rock solid for a month or so but has required a few reboots lately as it simply lost the connection.

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: When it works it works great. Web interface is easy to use.

Cons: I have had this router for almost a year and i have to reboot it almost weekly for connection to remain stable. I have installed newest firmware. The wireless connectivity with android phones is not that great.

4 out of 5 eggsUpdate after 8 months of use

Pros: Good price decent performance easy to use if you stick to basics. Good price, as some routers with same or similar performance are much pricier. After 8 months of gaming, no problems. I compared this router against an ASUS that was $200.00 more, and could not tell any difference in performance in a house with strong thick walls. Not just wood but cement, wood, plaster, etc.

Cons: 5GHZ wireless weak if not close by. Wife's computer further away from Router. So, she can only use the 2ghz signal. Wish the 5 ghz was much stronger.

Other Thoughts: If you have totally unobstructed path to receiving computer, then the signal will be good, but probably not more than 100 feet or so. That is using only what comes with it. That said, 5ghz is good if you are close with no obstructions at all. Then 2ghz will be good if the computer is in another room and reasonably close. Though I have an engineering degree and have been using PC computer for 30 years, I am still not a wizard with this equipment by any means. I just buy what I think will be good for whatever price. Anyone who needs a stronger signal, try to get the router as close to your computer as possible for wifi. If needed relocate the router plug closer. Check your firmware. IMHO
