4 out of 5 eggsFeature Pack

Pros: The options for on every mode this router has is amazing. I bought for the 4G capabilities and that along works great, but if you want this device to work as a redundant back up to your wireless devices, it will do that. great product.

Cons: It seems like in the morning trying to connect to 4G, it struggles a little and i have to reboot at least once. The rest of the day its just fine.

2 out of 5 eggsProduct feels half-baked, poorly implemented.

Pros: On paper it looks like it should be amazing but falls short of it's full potential.
+ Battery (user replaceable)
+ Battery can be re-charged with a standard Micro-USB cable
+ USB port
+ Ethernet port
+ Physical mode switch
+ Allows for re-configuration of ethernet port as WAN if no 3G/4G and vice-versa.
+ AP mode works.
+ USB port is only fully powered when in 3G/4G mode. (can be good and bad)
+ Can be used as an emergency USB power source/phone charger if you're desperate. (YMMV)

Cons: Disclaimer:
I do not have access to a true 3G/4G usb stick so as part of my testing I connected a couple EDGE data capable Motorola feature phones that I have used to tether in the past using Dial-Up Networking in windows. Only one was partially detected and even then only the signal strength showed on the router's status page.

3G/4G Mode:
- Limited list of officially verified modems. (seems to use old-school dial-up networking but requires specialized configuration scripts instead of a more robust and universal implementation. Check official device support list before buying or prepare to be disappointed. Contact TP-Link support if you find your unlisted modem works.)
- No support for USB tethering a smartphone. (main reason I purchased)
- Previous products are known to have weak USB power supplies, further limiting compatibility with devices that require more power.
- USB port is only fully powered when in 3G/4G mode. (can be good and bad)

WISP mode:
- Does not support roaming to multiple access points with the same SSID, it locks onto a single AP/MAC.
- Router only broadcasts its own SSID after it connects to a network, because of this you are forced to reconfigure using a wired device, or constantly use the reset button as that is the only time you can access the router from a wireless device.
- Does not appear to support joining an AD-HOC network. (potential workaround for USB smartphone tethering if the phone doesn't support creating an infrastructure based wifi hotspot - which was the reason for my purchase)

AP Mode:
+ None so far.

Firmware:
- Auto refresh can be a annoying if you take too long while configuring.
- Right click menu is disabled throughout.
- Help panel on the right side can be re-sized but not disabled and can limit screen space on small screens.
- Can only configure settings based on the physical switch. No web-based way to access "other mode" options.
- Supports internet time sync, but only when there is an active "WAN" connection. (Not a big deal but can be annoying if using logging features since the time and date get reset if the battery is pulled)

Other Thoughts: The product designers at TP-Link seem to have completely missed the point of giving a router a battery, _Mobility_.
The lack of thought put into this device other than adding a battery is painfully obvious in the firmware and how the device behaves, WISP mode in particular.

Since WISP mode seems to be using some combination of repeater+bridge that highlights the fact that this router only has one wifi transceiver, you'd need two MR3040 connected via ethernet, in order to have a more useful and truly mobile experience.

While there technically are a couple third party firmwares floating around for this device they're not entirely supported and sound high risk/buggy based on what I've read.

- Ethernet port is only 100Mbit. (could slightly limit max wired to wireless throughput)
- USB storage (NAS) support would have been nice.
- 5ghz support would be nice in future products.

Note: I purchased an MR3040 at a local retailer.
I had intended to USB tether my smartphone and provide an infrastructure AP for a tablet which does not support bluetooth or AD-HOC wifi.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear customer,
Thank you for your detailed review and suggestions to the TL-MR3040.
Unfortunately the MR3040 is not designed to tether smart phones or provide USB sharing.

We always appreciate the tech savvy customers like you providing product feedbacks and suggestions to us.
Some of your suggestions will be considered on our products, such as WISP roaming improvment, USB storage, USB output power management...

If you need further info on our products, please feel free to let me know.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Portable Gadget !!!

Pros: I have an apple tablet 2 no 3g that I need to tether. I don't want to use my phone plan since it is just 200mb/month. I bought an internet stick from T mobile and got prepaid broadband card. It worked with no problems during my out of town trip to Vegas. Hurray. Easy to set up. I hope they make a black model. Great job TP-link. Great job N-egg for getting this product.

Cons: None
