I received a version 2.2 unit.  If you're building a PirateBox beware of turning off the unit prematurely.  The TP-Link web admin interface will mislead you.  I bricked mine.  It's recoverable, but extra work.

Otherwise looks like a very nice product.

Question 2

Is the small USB port on the side a micro-usb (such as on Android phones), or a mini-usb (such as on a Garmin or Tom Tom cord)?

I believe it is a Micro USB port. It is the same as the one on my Galaxy S4 phone.

Question 3

Two part question: Will this work with the Verizon 4GLTE USB551L? My understanding is that I can plug in this usb modem and transmit the wireless signal to other devices, is this the case?

If that modem is Linux compatible,  then maybe? 
Otherwise yes, if the modem works, then this device can be set up to act as a wifi router, and will use the modem for getting to the internet.

Version 2.  If you're going to put OpenWRT on it, 4MB is really tight.  Also version 2 of OpenWrt doesn't run reliably, so you'd want to run version 1 anyway.

My TL-MR3040 routers are version 2 of the hardware.  There has only been one firmware update released since I purchased my routers and I have not updated yet.

Question 7

Does the internal software allow me to setup a VPN connection to allow any mobile device connecting via Wi-Fi to utilize the VPN connection?

I don't know about the stock firmware, but if you flash OpenWrt to it, I suspect you can.  Though that'll take some work since the version of OpenWrt for this device doesn't come with their awesome web-based configuration.  So you'll have to be pretty handy with Linux and read up on the documentation if you go that route.  I quick search online shows promising results for what I described above.

If in 3G/4G mode while using a USB stick from a carrier, can I set up my own private network (192.168.x.x) and have NAT/port fowarding capabilities using this router?

Yes, it is exactly how it works. You can do port forwarding and triggering, and can even put one of local hosts in DMZ.

Since the RJ45 jack could be use as a LAN or a WAN under 3G/4G mode, If I want or need more signal, I hook the LAN port to a Router that I have with more signal range. Other than that, there is no setting in the router to increase the gain on the antenna.  I hope this was of help. Thanks.

I want to use MR3040 ver 2 in the 4G router mode. Specifically, I have an iphone5S (OS ver 7.06) with AT&T's LTE wireless.  Want to put the iphone in the "personal hot spot" mode and connect the IPhone to the MR3040's USB input port via the iPhone USB charging cable.

According to the TP-link website MR3040 ver 2(only) supports LTE. However, TP-link tech support said that the iPhone tethering mode does not work for MR3040ver2, only works with USB modem stick.
However, in the hot spot mode with USB output, the iPhone is equivalent to a USB modern stick. So I am confused.

Does anyone know the iPhone tethering mode work for this router?

It does not work as "plug and play."  I just tried it.  And trying to configure the router to work with the phone as a modem in the settings, I doubt would work either because of the password and security built into the phone.
