Features

Features
PureVoice
In today's connected home environment with Internet file sharing, video streaming, on-line gaming, Ooma's PureVoice Technology delivers clear audio even if substandard calling conditions exist. Ooma PureVoice Technology is composed of four key components.

Advanced voice compression
Ooma uses an advanced voice compression algorithm that reduces bandwidth consumption by 60% over standard VoIP technology. That leaves you with more bandwidth for all other online activities and increases the likelihood that your voice traffic will be delivered properly by your ISP.

Wire-speed QoS
Even though Ooma uses only a fraction of the bandwidth of standard VoIP technology, preserving voice quality requires that those packets arrive on time. The Ooma Telo prioritizes voice packets without slowing down the rest of your network. This way you can enjoy crystal clear calls even as you're uploading your latest video clips.

Adaptive redundancy
Packet loss is the enemy of VoIP - it can cause voice to sound stuttered or garbled. The Ooma Telo detects packet loss on your Internet connection and automatically sends redundant packets to boost the clarity of your phone call.

Encrypted calls
Ooma takes your privacy seriously. We use the same encryption technology governments use to protect classified data to protect your conversations. This makes Ooma even more secure than the traditional landline.

5 out of 5 eggsWOW! Works Great! Saves Money!

Pros: Switched to Ooma when it first came out because Vonage business rates kept going up and up. Obviously, since I switched to Ooma when it first came out, I didn't buy from Newegg because they didn't carry it at the time. If they did I would have, I buy everything from the EGG! Any reviews that say that their support is bad can't be totally accurate. I have called twice. Once to ask a few questions and once with a small problem and both times it was a good experience and they were very helpful.

Cons: I seriously can't think of one con. I'm really trying but...... I can't even make one up.

Other Thoughts: If you want to save money, get this. The only thing that might be a problem is your internet company. With AT&T, if I cancel my land line, my internet charge goes up but what I did do was to get the most basic phone line possible. No long distance or anything like that and I never use that phone and it's cheaper to have internet service and one phone line than it is to have just the internet service.

5 out of 5 eggsEasy setup and management interface

Pros: Reliability:
I've owned the Ooma for about a year now, and I haven't had a single issue with it that wasn't related to an ISP outage.

Ease of Setup:
Installation was a breeze with one caveat which I will explain in the cons section.
Porting my number from my old landline provider took a few days but went through without a problem.
I ran through the trial of Ooma Pro which was excellent for dealing with telemarketers, and perhaps I'll end up paying for it.

Ease of Management:
The web interface for management is very straight-forward. It's quite the "set it and forget it" type of appliance.

Price:
When I bought it, I paid around $180, but considering how much I paid my landline provider I've long since made up for that in savings.

Cons: Susceptibility to interference:
When I initially setup the Ooma, I was getting a lot of static in the calls. I purchased some insulated telephone and ethernet cables, but there was no change. Eventually I used some power-line adapters to connect the Ooma in another room. At my house, I've converted an end-table into a mini wiring cabinet for my router, switch, NAS, etc. I initially setup up the Ooma on top of this cabinet, but apparently it was too sensitive to the interference from my wireless router I'm guessing.

5 out of 5 eggsOoma is better than I expected

Pros: The setup was easy.
Ooma Customer Service ported my number very easily and quickly from my lan line carrier to the Ooma Service. The cost of the port was $39.99. The sound quality is great and there is no difference in the quality compared to the lan line.
Ooma provides E911 Service, which some providers don't. The cost for me is $3.78 a month. It's got many great features such as the ability to black list numbers to prevent the robodialers and other telemarketers. There is built in caller id, call forwarding, emailed transcribed voice mail and electronic voice mail. The "my Ooma" site where one sets up blacklisting, call forwarding, paying bills, etc. is easy, intuitive and a no nonsense site. I have made several international calls to the U.K. and was amazed at the cost for international calls ($0.19 per minute) This is far better product than I expected and would recommend.

Cons: The fee for porting the number was $39.99. I am sure there is a way to attach this to your wired home phone lines, but in the mean time, not sure what to do with the old ma bell connectors on the kitchen wall as well as those throughout the house.

Other Thoughts: Bought new cordless phone lines with a single base with 4 phones. Would have otherwise had to wire other lines throughout house.

3 out of 5 eggsTechnically Excellent, But...

Pros: Works as advertised. Very easy setup. Impeccable voice quality.
My only customer service call went just fine.
Evaluated on it's won merits the device is great.
However, the device does not operate in a vacuum.

Cons: Some features commonly bundled with other phone services are extra cost options here. There is a free trial of extra cost services included which confuses the issue a bit. Significant up front cost. Needs inexpensive Internet access to be cost effective. The total monthly cost of extra cost options, amortizing the device, and taxes is still pretty reasonable, not free. IIRC it would have cost me about $14/Month (plus tax) vs $30/Month for Vonage. Not bad at all, but not free.

Other Thoughts: The ISPs available to me for now structure their rates in a way that puts third party phone and TV services at a disadvantage. They price Internet Services alone so high that the difference between that and a "triple play" is negligible. I was expecting to be eligible for a promo price on Internet only service, but it turned out that I was not. Internet alone was to be $70/Month vs $85/Month for "triple play". That's $70 + $14 + $10 (for Hulu) = $94 which is $9/Month more plus the porting fee for less TV programming and fewer phone features. It just didn't make sense. I wound up sadly sending the Telo back.

I think this is terribly unfair and something for the Justice Dept, the FTC, or the FCC to look into, but for now it's the way things are. If I could get decently fast service for $35/Month I'd have kept it in a heartbeat and at $50/Month still would have considered it, but at $70/Month it didn't make sense. So whether or not it makes sense for you may depend on what the ISPs in your area are offering.

I gave it three eggs, but that was a weak compromise between the one egg I'd give because I couldn't use it and the five eggs I'd give based on the merits of the the product.

4 out of 5 eggsSaving Money Now!

Pros: I have had my Telo for nearly two years now. It has been saving me money for quite a while. The voice quality is better than a cell phone but not quite as good as the POTS.

Cons: There is a slight latency that isn't present in the cell or POTS, but it doesn't make it unusable.

Other Thoughts: I am happy enough with it considering all I pay now is the tax.

1 out of 5 eggsTerrible experience

Pros: Actual VOIP service works well, if you have a solid broadband connection (which I do)

Cons: Customer service treats you so nice on the phone (or chat window), but the actual back-end help never happens. Ooma is one of the most inept companies I've ever expereinced, and this is one of the worse purchases I've ever made in my life.

Other Thoughts: I wish I had never heard of Ooma. Nothing but regrets here.

1 out of 5 eggsooma telo

Pros: none, couldn't get the activation code from ooma. Label was mis registered & unreadable. Sent serial # from box for activation code, 5 days later ,no response. I am requesting a refund from Newegg.

Cons: quality control(lack), customer service,OOMA TELO (lack)

Other Thoughts: quality control from ooma telo ? How about the quality of the warranty, should it break down after 30 or 60 days?

1 out of 5 eggsRings and does not answer

Pros: The phone is easy to install. No problems. It will only work state side.

Cons: We couldn't make long distance phone calls to Colombia. We tried working with customer service, and they were making us do things but nothing worked. It would call and it rings the number, but it didn't at the other end. Then we call with a credit card, and they answer and say we never heard you calling. This was not acceptable.

Other Thoughts: They try helping but it does not work like it should. After two month, we gave up and disconnected the account.

1 out of 5 eggsCustomer Service is soso at best

Pros: cheaper than ma bell

Cons: stuttering quality at times,
have to upgrade to premiere service ($120 year) for many of the "available" features,
have to call in to drop the premiere service, quite poor for an "online" company.

Other Thoughts: their automated attendant stinks.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Product

Pros: No phone bill, other than applicable taxes of around $4/monthly
Nicely designed, good ergonomics.
Other than the notes at the initial dial tone, it's indistinguishable from my former land line
Wireless adapter is a winner; allows placement anywhere; no deterioration of voice quality.
Setup is a snap if you read the instructions carefully

Cons: None encountered yet

Other Thoughts: Wish I had bought this earlier; provides significant savings.
