In today's connected home environment with Internet file sharing, video streaming, on-line gaming, Ooma's PureVoice Technology delivers clear audio even if substandard calling conditions exist. Ooma PureVoice Technology is composed of four key components.

Advanced voice compression
Ooma uses an advanced voice compression algorithm that reduces bandwidth consumption by 60% over standard VoIP technology. That leaves you with more bandwidth for all other online activities and increases the likelihood that your voice traffic will be delivered properly by your ISP.

Wire-speed QoS
Even though Ooma uses only a fraction of the bandwidth of standard VoIP technology, preserving voice quality requires that those packets arrive on time. The Ooma Telo prioritizes voice packets without slowing down the rest of your network. This way you can enjoy crystal clear calls even as you're uploading your latest video clips.

Adaptive redundancy
Packet loss is the enemy of VoIP - it can cause voice to sound stuttered or garbled. The Ooma Telo detects packet loss on your Internet connection and automatically sends redundant packets to boost the clarity of your phone call.

Encrypted calls
Ooma takes your privacy seriously. We use the same encryption technology governments use to protect classified data to protect your conversations. This makes Ooma even more secure than the traditional landline.

2 out of 5 eggsRecent Significant Degradation

Pros: IT WAS a terrific service when originally purchased 3 years ago - worked like a charm, but recently for over a month....... it's been a completely different story!

Cons: Since sometime in June/July 2014, service has degraded significantly. Nearly everyday, the voice mail system fails at least once a day and frequently 2x to sometimes 3x a day - cannot access voice mail and told to wait - "We're sorry. there was a problem processing the page .... please contact Ooma Support"

I contacted Ooma Support at least 50 times, but no response. I've given up contacting them.

Voice mail I noticed will sometimes suddenly appear more than 4 hours after the caller left the message! What is that? Unreliable and unacceptable, especially after listening to all my messages and not realizing that another message came in afterwards!

The Call Log info also frequently fails to manifest itself, and the same "Try Later" message repeatedly appears!

Other Thoughts: It's too bad that after a good start and a great product, Ooma is on its way down. I've been very disappointed over the last couple of months and customer service completely ignores my contact. It's true, "you get what you pay for" and Ooma is no different..... Once you buy their box, you're at their mercy for "good service".....

5 out of 5 eggsGreat phone service

Pros: Free (plus taxes) after the upfront cost of the Telo. Great sound quality. Easy setup.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Understand what the service is before you buy. It's VoIP, or Voice over Internet Protocol. If you have a slow or latent internet connection the sound quality will be poor. That's not Oomma's fault. The service will cease to work if your internet is down. The service is free. Don't be confused by the taxes the government requires Ooma to collect. I've been using VoIP service for 6 years (Packet8, Vonage and Ooma) and this is by far the best service for the cost.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent especially for what I paid

Pros: Buy the hardware from wherever and get free service aside from taxes. Voice quality is great.

Cons: Uses its own VPN type connectivity to the mother ship instead of standard SIP. Makes port forwarding unnecessary and provides encryption but a bit limiting.

Other Thoughts: I got my Telo for the princely sum of $10 at a local donation store. The previous owners did not cancel seevice so I got a free ride for a while. Once they did it was just $10 to reactivate. Not too shabby.

4 out of 5 eggsvery nice connection once it works

Pros: Very clear connection -- flawless performance once set up. Very good feature set. Nice to dump a separate phone bill.

Cons: Bought a refurb, that was dropping packets. Tech support at Ooma walked through every option -- cables, router, power supply, etc. Took about 2 days to determine it was the unit itself.
Ooma sent a new unit to replace, and free shipment of old unit. Now works flawlessly.
The cost savings of the refurb were diminished by the little frustration of debugging the unit.

5 out of 5 eggsOoma is a great product

Pros: easy installation, cheap service

Cons: none yet

Other Thoughts: will have to wait and see how the billing for monthly rates works out. I should be getting for about $5 what I used to pay more than $50

3 out of 5 eggsBeware the "Gotcha's"

Pros: Call Quality. Low monthly cost

Cons: High initial cost. Sneaky High prices gotchas

Other Thoughts: Already this device is overpriced. Know that it sold for $80 just this past November, but the real "gotcha" with Ooma is that they charge you $40 to port you number. $40!? That's more than TWICE anyone else. Cell phone co's charge nothing. Cable companies charge nothing. Magic Jack, Net Duo, even Google Voice charge half that or less. Of course, that isn't indicated here. The other thing is, they really push you towards their "Premium" service, which is an additional $10 a month. Yes, you get Caller ID for free, but want the Caller ID to also display the name of the caller? You have to be A Premium subscriber. I REALLY hate companies who advertise one thing, then nickel and dime you. Particularly when that nickel and dime is $40

Pros: Easy to set up. I ported my number, that ran smoothly. I took a week. I works with my alarm system, a big plus. I dumped Vonage.

Cons: none

5 out of 5 eggsWorks as advertise

Pros: - Excellent Voice quality
- Pays for itself in less than a year
- No monthly payments except for taxes (about $3-$4 NYC)
- Able to block annoying telemarketers (Premier Service only)
- Can check voicemail online
- Can forward calls to my cell if my internet is down

Cons: - Sometimes calls drop due to bad connection from internet
- Somehow got more unknown callers
- Porting my old number was a little troublesome

Other Thoughts: - Premier Service is neat but I rather not pay $10 a month for it. If you are looking to cut down your phone bill, try it out.

1 out of 5 eggsOOMA Telo & Cisco IP Phone

Pros: OOMA makes it very easy to install for the normal consumer
Sleek design and user friendly interface
Website resourceful for setting up device to work with normal phone
Quality is good

Cons: Doesn't work with Cisco IP phones since SIP information is not shared by OOMA. This is the biggest knock to it since it has so much potential.

Other Thoughts: I understand VOIP Service Providers are making money on selling hardware, but they seem to forget that the hardware wars died in the 90s. They should be focusing on services, for example offering a SIP service for an extra cost to the user subscription would make things much easier on us. SIP is a protocol required for some IP Phones such as Cisco.
