Ooma "OOMA TELO 2" Free VoIP Home Service

Ooma Telo Free Home Phone Service

The Ooma Telo allows you to call anywhere in the U.S. for free - after purchase of the Ooma Telo all you pay is applicable taxes and fees. The Telo is easy to set up and even easier to use. Simply connect the device to your high-speed Internet and then to your existing phone. You don't need to use a computer or wear a headset to make and receive calls. In fact, your telephone will work as it always has, just without the costly monthly bills. With the Ooma Telo, you'll be calling and saving money within minutes.

Free Calls in the U.S. and Low International Rates

With its sleek design and enhanced calling features, the only thing that's not impressive about the Ooma Telo is the price tag. The Ooma Telo allows you to enjoy free calls within the United States and low international rates, resulting in savings on your phone bills.

Easy Installation with Your Existing Phones

The Ooma Telo has been designed for intuitive and easy installation: simply connect it to your router and your existing home telephone. Most customers are connected and making calls in less than 15 minutes. If you've got any questions, the Ooma support site is loaded with dozens of articles, diagrams, tips, and friendly help.

Get Peace of Mind with 911 Alerts

Going out shouldn't be cause for concern when you leave your kids with a babysitter or when you're caring for a loved one. Gain some peace of mind with 911 Alerts. If anyone dials 911 from your Ooma phone, we'll immediately send a text message to your cell phone letting you know. You'll instantly be alerted that there's a problem, and can respond to the situation appropriately.

Port Your Existing Phone Number

For a one-time fee, Ooma gives you the option of retaining your current telephone number. If you prefer to change numbers, you can choose a new number in almost any calling area in the US at no extra cost.

Exclusive Web Portal
My Ooma is the online command center for your Ooma system. You can check your voicemail and call logs, configure your preferences, upload your Contact List, update your 911 address and much more. Access My Ooma anytime and anywhere that you have an Internet connection, even from your mobile smartphone.

Crisp, Clear Voice Quality with No Dropped Calls
PureVoice HD technology allows Ooma to deliver clear audio even when substandard calling conditions exist. It includes:

Advanced Voice Compression: Ooma uses an advanced voice compression algorithm that consumes over 60% less bandwidth than standard VoIP technology. That leaves you with more bandwidth for your other online activities, and increases the likelihood that your voice traffic will be delivered.

Wire-speed Quality of Service: Even though Ooma uses only a fraction of the bandwidth of standard VoIP technology, those packets need to arrive without delay for optimal quality. The Ooma Telo prioritizes voice packets without slowing down the rest of your network. This way you can enjoy crystal clear calls even as you're uploading your latest video clips.

Adaptive Redundancy: Network packet loss is the enemy of VoIP - dropped packets can cause voice to sound stuttered or garbled. The Ooma Telo detects packet loss on your Internet connection and automatically sends redundant packets to boost the clarity of your phone call.

Encrypted Calls: Ooma takes your privacy seriously. We leverage the same encryption technology that governments use to protect classified data to protect your conversations. This makes Ooma even more secure than the traditional landline.

High Definition Technology: HD Voice technology doubles the fidelity of your phone calls by capturing twice the speech information of a standard voice call (yes, that even includes your landline). When you and the other caller both use an Ooma Telo Handset or other HD compatible phone, your voice will sound more natural than ever.

Sophisticated Technology Meets Elegant Design

The Ooma Telo is a small, always-on, network-managed, secure Linux computer packed with processing power to keep your calls clear and reliable.

Ooma is a full router capable of prioritizing voice data and directing traffic to ensure the most reliable phone service. Features include:

  • USB port supports Wi-Fi and Bluetooth accessories and provides future expansion opportunities.
  • Built-in speaker provides you the ability to screen calls prior to answering.
  • Touch sensitive keypad provides one-touch access to Voicemail and other frequently used features.
  • Built-in DECT 6.0 supports optional Ooma HD2 Handsets and Ooma Linx remote phone jacks for superb sound, security and range.
  • Built-in dual 450MHz processors and 1Gbyte non-volatile memory provides the power for Ooma PureVoiceTM, including HD Voice and Adaptive Redundancy for a more natural sounding voice without stuttering or interruption.

  • High-speed fixed-line Internet connection (cable, DSL, fiber-optic)
  • 256Kbps upstream network speed (384 Kbps recommended)

2 out of 5 eggsRecent Significant Degradation

Pros: IT WAS a terrific service when originally purchased 3 years ago - worked like a charm, but recently for over a month....... it's been a completely different story!

Cons: Since sometime in June/July 2014, service has degraded significantly. Nearly everyday, the voice mail system fails at least once a day and frequently 2x to sometimes 3x a day - cannot access voice mail and told to wait - "We're sorry. there was a problem processing the page .... please contact Ooma Support"

I contacted Ooma Support at least 50 times, but no response. I've given up contacting them.

Voice mail I noticed will sometimes suddenly appear more than 4 hours after the caller left the message! What is that? Unreliable and unacceptable, especially after listening to all my messages and not realizing that another message came in afterwards!

The Call Log info also frequently fails to manifest itself, and the same "Try Later" message repeatedly appears!

Other Thoughts: It's too bad that after a good start and a great product, Ooma is on its way down. I've been very disappointed over the last couple of months and customer service completely ignores my contact. It's true, "you get what you pay for" and Ooma is no different..... Once you buy their box, you're at their mercy for "good service".....

5 out of 5 eggsGreat phone service

Pros: Free (plus taxes) after the upfront cost of the Telo. Great sound quality. Easy setup.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Understand what the service is before you buy. It's VoIP, or Voice over Internet Protocol. If you have a slow or latent internet connection the sound quality will be poor. That's not Oomma's fault. The service will cease to work if your internet is down. The service is free. Don't be confused by the taxes the government requires Ooma to collect. I've been using VoIP service for 6 years (Packet8, Vonage and Ooma) and this is by far the best service for the cost.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent especially for what I paid

Pros: Buy the hardware from wherever and get free service aside from taxes. Voice quality is great.

Cons: Uses its own VPN type connectivity to the mother ship instead of standard SIP. Makes port forwarding unnecessary and provides encryption but a bit limiting.

Other Thoughts: I got my Telo for the princely sum of $10 at a local donation store. The previous owners did not cancel seevice so I got a free ride for a while. Once they did it was just $10 to reactivate. Not too shabby.

4 out of 5 eggsvery nice connection once it works

Pros: Very clear connection -- flawless performance once set up. Very good feature set. Nice to dump a separate phone bill.

Cons: Bought a refurb, that was dropping packets. Tech support at Ooma walked through every option -- cables, router, power supply, etc. Took about 2 days to determine it was the unit itself.
Ooma sent a new unit to replace, and free shipment of old unit. Now works flawlessly.
The cost savings of the refurb were diminished by the little frustration of debugging the unit.

5 out of 5 eggsOoma is a great product

Pros: easy installation, cheap service

Cons: none yet

Other Thoughts: will have to wait and see how the billing for monthly rates works out. I should be getting for about $5 what I used to pay more than $50

3 out of 5 eggsBeware the "Gotcha's"

Pros: Call Quality. Low monthly cost

Cons: High initial cost. Sneaky High prices gotchas

Other Thoughts: Already this device is overpriced. Know that it sold for $80 just this past November, but the real "gotcha" with Ooma is that they charge you $40 to port you number. $40!? That's more than TWICE anyone else. Cell phone co's charge nothing. Cable companies charge nothing. Magic Jack, Net Duo, even Google Voice charge half that or less. Of course, that isn't indicated here. The other thing is, they really push you towards their "Premium" service, which is an additional $10 a month. Yes, you get Caller ID for free, but want the Caller ID to also display the name of the caller? You have to be A Premium subscriber. I REALLY hate companies who advertise one thing, then nickel and dime you. Particularly when that nickel and dime is $40

5 out of 5 eggsWorks as advertise

Pros: - Excellent Voice quality
- Pays for itself in less than a year
- No monthly payments except for taxes (about $3-$4 NYC)
- Able to block annoying telemarketers (Premier Service only)
- Can check voicemail online
- Can forward calls to my cell if my internet is down

Cons: - Sometimes calls drop due to bad connection from internet
- Somehow got more unknown callers
- Porting my old number was a little troublesome

Other Thoughts: - Premier Service is neat but I rather not pay $10 a month for it. If you are looking to cut down your phone bill, try it out.

1 out of 5 eggsOOMA Telo & Cisco IP Phone

Pros: OOMA makes it very easy to install for the normal consumer
Sleek design and user friendly interface
Website resourceful for setting up device to work with normal phone
Quality is good

Cons: Doesn't work with Cisco IP phones since SIP information is not shared by OOMA. This is the biggest knock to it since it has so much potential.

Other Thoughts: I understand VOIP Service Providers are making money on selling hardware, but they seem to forget that the hardware wars died in the 90s. They should be focusing on services, for example offering a SIP service for an extra cost to the user subscription would make things much easier on us. SIP is a protocol required for some IP Phones such as Cisco.
