Perfect for light tasks and new users
- Pros: Excellent price for a laptop! $450 is a steal. It's perfect for doing light tasks like checking your email, typing a paper, making excel sheets, and surfing the web. It's also extremely thin and has a relatively big screen.
- Cons: It comes loaded with your standard HP crapware that you have to uninstall before the laptop starts to perform like it should. But once you've sorted out the piles of garbage that comes with it, this laptop works flawlessly.
- Other Thoughts: I bought this for my grandma for doing what I mentioned above in the pros section. I would recommend getting a travel mouse that has a roll-up cord, unless you like using the pad. I would also recommend getting a wireless router so you can surf the web anywhere in your house.
Hardware is great, Software is not!
- Pros: After UPS delivered this laptop, the first thing I did was format the hard drive and install Ubuntu. I did plan to do this even before I ordered it. Now it is a good performer and feels much faster than other laptops I have used with MS Vista. In my opinion no laptop would preform well running Vista. Before I ordered the laptop I had planned to install more memory but after running with the 1gb that comes with it, I don't think I will need more. In the past I have set up three computer similar to this for other people and I was not impressed with there performance. This laptop however is an exception to that rule. My only other concern is the battery life, a battery upgrade will take care of that I'm sure.
- Cons: Vista!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great Laptop
- Pros: Good value for what you get. Nothing wrong with this laptop at all from a hardware standpoint.
- Cons: Comes with Vista and bundled software from HP. I removed Vista from my system immediately.
- Other Thoughts: I installed windows xp SP3 on this along with opensuse 11.0 linux. Windows xp sp3 is working great. Most of the drivers were easy to find except for the audio, which was tough but I finally got the right drivers for it. On linux, the only thing that doesn't work is the Atheros wireless card, but that's not surprising.
