Even better deal
- Pros: For the price this is amazing. Fast CPU, fast 7200rpm hard drive, Vista 32 or 64bit with XP pro downgrade. DDR2 800 instead of 667. Wireless 802.11n, blu tooth and eSATA. I purchased the 15.4" version of this for a bit less but the CPU is a bit slower and it didn't come with the 7200rpm hard drive, blu tooth and fingerprint reader.
- Cons: This one just dropped in price right after I purchased the 15.4" version which came with less features than this one. The price difference between the two models now are negligible and with additional feature and a smaller form factor, I'm kinda kickin my self for not waiting a little bit longer before my purchase.
- Other Thoughts: Though it only comes with 2gb of ram, it is one stick instead of 2 making upgrading to a full 4 much cheaper. All you need to do is purchase anther 2gb and you're set.
S300M-2142
- Pros: Shrank the volume to 100/40 (rest belongs to vista/toshiba system partitions). Installed Fedora 10 on the 40gig partition, dual boot is smooth and fast. Laptop is light, doesn't get too hot. Initial battery life run time is around 2h30min.
Inclusion of CD/DVD burning software is a definite plus from Toshiba.
- Cons: Stock is 2GB of ram and 160GB HDD, but these are easily upgraded. The real issue is lack of documentation for this specific model. Seems like a newegg specific special, so finding a QVL for memory has not been easy. Will most likely match S300M-2403 but rather than take the chance call Toshiba first
- Other Thoughts: If it is truly a newegg special, newegg should provide some reference to a QVL for memory.
Was purchased from newegg. (Came in two days, good packaging.)

For college student
- Pros: Professional looking, quiet, my one call to Toshiba support was answered quickly. I liked the opening screen option to load either Vista 32 or 64 business. If you want XP, there is a separate disk to install.
- Cons: None
- Other Thoughts: Purchased for college student. bought the Western Digital Scorpio Black WD3200BEKT 320GB right away to replace the 160 gig that comes with this laptop. The 160 worked fine, I just wanted more capacity. Be sure to look in the Toshiba utility program folder to run their "create a restore DVD" disk. It will have you burn 4 DVD disks in case you need to reload Vista.
Works well with Ubuntu. A great laptop.
- Pros: This is a very fast machine, and a high performer. It works very well with linux, has plenty of USB ports (4), COM port, DVD burner, SD slot and much more. I estimate I get approximately 2.5 hours of battery.
VERY comfortable keyboard that was thought out nicely.
- Cons: Not the most attractive laptop, the internal speakers are the worst speakers i have ever heard, no svideo or dvi.
A bit difficult to get sound working under Ubuntu, but the fix is simple (explained in other thoughts)
- Other Thoughts: I highly recommend this laptop. When I got it I added 2 more gigs of ram, uninstalled vista (be sure to set aside 4 blank dvds to make a backup of the vista restore partition), and installed XP Pro (included), and Ubuntu 9.04.
In order to get sound working, I upgraded to the newest version of ALSA, and placed "options snd-hda-intel model=toshiba" (without quotes) at the end of my /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf file. After a quick restart, it worked like a charm.
Everything else seems to work with linux out-of-the-box. SD slot works, USB works, wireless, bluetooth, etc.
A very excellent choice in a laptop.
Super Satisfied
- Pros: At first I thought it came loaded with a bunch of bloatware, but it's mostly Toshiba apps and some are even useful. Lighter than I thought it would, other techs have commented on it too. Good processor, can't complain about onboard video since it's for work. RDP is a real graphics hog :-p It can play Starcraft on lunchbreaks just fine. Keyboard feels right, touchpad is ok, no problems with the fingerprint reader and nice for not having to remember rotating passwords. Battery life is good, and if you lower the brightness it seems to last forever. Has all the ports I would ever need.
- Cons: Ordered a matching stick of RAM from provantage, took 5 weeks for them to tell me that they were no longer manufacturing it. Ended up just buying a pair of G.Skill from newegg. Lack of documentation for this specific model is a pain.
- Other Thoughts: I'm a field service tech and I purchased this for that reason. I love the 14" frame, very lightweight but provides plenty of desktop space at a decent resolution. I kept Vista for now because I was curious how it would run on a laptop, not that bad :) Runs better with 4 GB of RAM, with 2 it kept locking up my web database ticket system. Overall great machine, would recommend it to anybody for the price it was at, and even now it's not that bad a deal.
