HD!
- Pros: *Huge-Jumped 3 inches more than my previous laptop. The entire screen is bright and clear with no bleeding or blemishes.
*The Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound is a lot better than regular laptop speakers. I prefer to watch my DVDs on my laptop instead of the ol' stereo TV in the office.
*HD-Contrary to Newegg's listed specs, this laptop displays at crystal-clear 1920x1080 resolution!
*Great for gaming-It may not be the ultimate gaming rig, but it handled Fallout 3 at high resolution and settings without crashing and with good framerate. I played it at 1280x720 for a smoother ride later on, but it was manageable at full 1920x1080 resolution.
*4 Gigs of Ram make for a smooth Vista experience. Add a high speed 2gb SD card into the 6-in-1 reader as a permanent ReadyBoost drive and it's like you've got 6 gigs of ram instead! (Or near enough...ReadyBoost increases performance similar to how RAM does, but there's a difference between the two)
*eSATA can be used as a usb port, so 4 usb ports in a
- Cons: *No BluRay-The DVD combo drive makes having 1080 resolution a little pointless if you mostly just watch movies, but there's other ways to get HD movies playing on a computer
*Like any other company, Acer packs a lot of unwanted software and games onto the laptop. Casual users probably won't mind it, but I like optimizing my Vista experience as much as possible for better performance while I work
*Too Glossy! You really start noticing the oil on everything. The Multimedia Panel, the screen and border, the top of the casing, and even the keyboard! Makes it a bit disgusting to type until your fingers wear the gloss off the keys on your keyboard enough
*No backup/driver/restore disks! It just came with the laptop, cables, and "the manual" that most users never open
*Bluetooth key but no bluetooth
These Cons aren't enough to deny the laptop 5 stars. For any new computer you should expect to spend a few hours to days making it "yours". If you don't then you're not doing it justice!
- Other Thoughts: When I first got this laptop I immediately wiped it clean and installed Windows Vista Ultimate x64 over it. No more "Empowering Technology" and special offers and games that Acer drowns the laptop in, and it still runs like a champ...no surprise there! I disabled the fingerprint reader.
As of the time of this post, Acer's American support site does not have the proper drivers for the 8930. I recommend you go to Acer's European site instead to download the drivers.
NVidia does not have a download area for the 9600M GT graphics chipset. HOWEVER, you can go to laptopvideo2go(.com) and find updated drivers for this chipset. The site requires some experience with computers and hardware identification, so use this at your own risk.
The software that manages the Multimedia TouchPad is the "Launch Manager" software (found on Acer's drivers page).

- Pros: It is a great computer for such little cost! It plays games like anything Ive ever seen and its very fast. I went around trying to find a good priced computer with a lot of good specs on it and I finally found this computer on Newegg and so I got it! =) great deal this is a must get!
- Cons: Its a little more heavier than most laptops but the 18' Screen is AMAZING

aspire 8930
- Pros: i ordered sat.20 with rush order, newegg delivered thurs.26 from CA to TX. Great screen, everything to specs so far, the baby discovered wi-fi and i was back in trading business in minutes (my previous asus 17'' f7k died on me last friday in the middle of trading stocks). looks great, pretty fast, out of the box works cool, lighter than my died one. so far very satisfied and will write another review after a month of work on it.
- Cons: the little plastic cork on the tubular side falls off, but its just a plastic cover i do not need, and without it, the laptop looks even better, more space-like:)
- Other Thoughts: you know, this feeleng, you sit in the car and u like it or not - i liked this one immediately i got it in my hands, feels cool
Low quality parts. Lower quality service.
- Pros: The computer looks great and was very inexpensive considering the specs. Incredible looking screen and is very large. A great desktop replacement if it wasn't for other issues.
- Cons: Light plasticy feel overall. Fingerprints show very badly on the keyboard and media pad. Overheating issues with 9600m GT. Very quiet even if turned all the way up.
- Other Thoughts: Screen stopped working the first day of use do to a driver issue. This model had no support section on the Acer website for the first three months that I owned it, that included no drivers to download. Recovery dics burned through their recovery software failed even though their software verified that they were successful. This forced me to reinstall windows and track down drivers as it was the third disc that failed to work meaning the first two discs had already wiped the HDD and started installing but would not proceed without a functioning third disc. Calling Acer led me nowhere, they said they had no info about this laptop yet, meaning no recovery discs as well. This lasted for three months before they could send me recovery discs to restore my computer to factory settings. More recently I have found the reason for poor frame rates in any video games that are played, the GPU (9600M GT) is overheating, 106° C, and automatically lowering its clock speed as a protection. - Pros: All is good, just wanted to add a warning. If you use an ATT USBconnect Quicksilver card with this computer: DO NOT USE THE DRIVERS THAT COME WITH THE CARD!!!! If you do the keyboard, touchpad, and sound card will not work. Instead get the GlobeTrotter software from http://support.option.com/att/
This is what I had to do following the ATT customer support and so far works nicely.
