A heavyweight champion
- Pros: While certainly too big and heavy to take on airplanes, this Acer 18.4 inch beauty makes a great desktop replacement. The big and wide display lets me set my Opera browser to 150% zoom and the screen is perfectly filled with very easy to read text. No more squinting! This machine is also so much faster than my old laptop. Even things like downloads go so much faster now. Part of that may be that the Acer picks up a much stronger signal that did my old machine. The Dolby Home Theatre, which is included in all the machines in Acer's 8930 line, gives a very nice sound for a laptop.
In summary, particularly for the price that I paid Newegg for this machine, I am very pleased. I think of this machine as a heavyweight champion of laptops.
- Cons: I had been thinking of waiting for Windows 7, but am wrestling with Vista instead. Fortunately this machine is still fast even with Vista. The CineDash controls left of the keys is an innovative idea for audio-visual controls but does take some getting used to. The advertised 500 gig hard drive is actually two separate drives, a C drive with 226 gig and a D drive with 220. Will have to figure out how to make the best use of that D drive.
- Other Thoughts: Also, this was my first purchase from Newegg, and they shipped very quickly and packed it well. I will certainly buy from them again.
Wow, this is a large laptop
- Pros: Fast, big screen, upgradeable. 1GB of dedicated video memory. My last laptop didn't even come with that much main system memory! I took off the back cover it is very Upgradeable. You can add another 2.5 Laptop hard drive, Empty Pci-e slot, Looks like you can replace the video card. There are a number of different models of this laptop. My guess is all of these different parts are interchangeable. Swap out DVD for Blu-Ray when the price drops enough to make it worth while. Maybe even upgrade to a quad processor.
- Cons: Need a Sherpa to carry it around for me.
You might need your own table at the local coffee houe.

Simply Phenomenal
- Pros: This laptop is simply incredible. The screen is a thing of beauty, as is the rest of the laptop. I've seen a few others complain of the weight, but I have no trouble hauling this around. It slightly argues about fitting into my backpack, but I manage to make it fit every day. The size is easy to adjust to, except any time you use a different laptop you might feel it's a bit small. Battery life is great, I can easily last upwards of 3 hours with some load, and I can still have upwards of 2 hours playing any game. The media control is a nice touch. Second hard drive slot on bottom for easy upgrade, and it looks like a lot of other components can be easily upgraded too. For the price they ask I can't think of a better deal.
- Cons: The media control volume control can be a bit difficult at times. It stinks you can't use it for whatever media player you choose, it's pretty much just for the Windows ones. Occasionally I want a better processor, but the one they have does plenty good enough.
Great Value & Great Performance
- Pros: This laptop is the best deal I was able to find for the specs this had. I just tried a couple of games at the highest resolution and graphics options availible and it was VERY satisfying. The speed is pheonomial and the laptop is very quite and cool. This laptop is underpriced imho. The screen is great, I am astonished by the brightness and crispness and equally please with the audio quality. The "duct-tape" feel to the touchpad is unique, and gives this unit a "rugged" feel. The keyboard is solid with very little give, although the keys seem a little slick. Did I mention Acer is offering a free upgrade to Windows 7????
This laptop seems to handle whatever I have been able to throw at it so far and Acer is VERY QUICK to respond to support questions. I am very please with this product and will be purchasing Acer from now on and continuing to use NewEgg.com for future big ticket items.
- Cons: As other's have stated, the touch controls are a little finnicky, and there only seems to be a low, medium, high setting while using those controls. The sound however is great for a laptop.
- Other Thoughts: I really wish this had bluetooth installed since it does have a button for it, but I am not complaining as there's plenty of other things this laptop has to counter that.
Sweeeeeeeet!!!
- Pros: What a great machine. Vista is Vista, but this is some piece of equipment. Like others have said, bloat ware up the wazoo, but once you get past that be ready to enjoy a very refined and elegantly designed entertainment machine that can handle any multimedia endeavored as well as top of the line demanding applications. A powerful work horse and a play thing all in one beautiful package.
- Cons: Not much to mention other then no restore cd/dvd and a quarter drive full of bloat ware.
- Other Thoughts: On another note(this wont do anyone who purchased before 6/28/09 any good) Everyone else listen up. If you go to the acer website at /windows7upgrade/. You can register for a free windows 7 upgrade when it is officially released later this year. If you are not able to enter your serial number use this number to call support.1-800-816-2237 Use the phrase “windows 7 upgrade to get to the right place in the voice response system. I personally had quite a tussle with them to get them to do it. My machine had a MFD of 03/03/09. The tech and I got into a match, because of the pre 6/28 MFD they didn’t want to give up the update. The wording on their website doesn’t mention MFD only purchase date. I got really bent with the tech and demanded to speak to a supervisor. Never got a super but did get the upgrade.
