1 out of 5 eggsvery unhappy

Pros: Not alot

Cons: Ive had problems with this the whole time Ive had it. I reinstalled a fresh windows 7 without ALL the bloatware. Because it randomly crashed. Then later I had usb ports go bad. I use this for only work so it sees min. use. I guess im used to Thinkpads ive owned several of them. So now it is out of warranty and i have a expensive paperweight. Good Job ACER I know now not to ever buy one again.

Other Thoughts: I should have pushed the warranty.. Because it had acted up since day one.

2 out of 5 eggsGood deal while the laptop lasts

Pros: This was a really good buy when we got it on sale for $700. Considering the processor and video card, it's a very affordable solution for a college student to use for both college-related uses as well gaming, of which again because of the processor and video card it is remarkably well suited.

Cons: From two to two and a half months after manufacturer warranty (about 10 months after we bought the laptop), we observed increasingly uncomfortable random shutdowns.

The shutdowns seemed to be due to the laptop overheating while playing games, so we made efforts to ensure the laptop was on a surface that would allow for more adequate cooling. Then, the shutdowns continued occurring when doing things such as internet browsing and some multitasking, again seeming to generate unreasonably high heat for the tasks described.

And finally, one day at about approximately 1 year since we had the laptop, it shutdown and no longer woke up. None of the status lights anywhere on the laptop lit up, absolutely no signs of life from the laptop itself.

Memory, hard drive swapped out with known good components, and still no life. All that could really be determined was that there exists some short on the motherboard as the power adapter switches itself off once connected to the laptop.

Other Thoughts: From researching this issue, I've found many cases where Acer users encounter the same problems with overheating, random shutdowns, and then a permanent shutdown. Obviously these are less expensive laptops than competitor brands with similar specifications, but if it's going to die in a year after use, the less expensive price tag is no longer the smarter solution.

Unfortunately from this experience I will no longer take Acer brand laptops into consideration, nor will I advise others to consider Acer brand laptops. Next time will spend a bit more money and get an ThinkPad or Asus, one that will last long enough to get my moneys worth.

5 out of 5 eggsCouldn't be anybetter.

Pros: This laptop is a power horse. I use it to do allot of photography, graphics and video editing and have been well impressed. All the features of this laptop are well worth the money. The over all functionality is great when using Adobe CS3 Premium Suite with no lag or freezing up at all. I use Photoshop, Illustrator, Premier Pro and Sound Forge on a daily basis and this laptop shows no signs of any weak links. The keyboard is very "hands positioning" friendly, the touch pad is great and very responsive too. Plenty of USB ports and the Line in is also great for doing some minimal recording of my guitar in Guitar Rig 3. The volume keys are nice, and the "P" button above the volume is a great feature for me, for a "quick launch" program list that you can pick and choose. I feels great even at extended uses. Video quality it outstanding and better than i had expected. Quiet, and does not get very hot.

Cons: I dont have many negative things about this laptop. Most of which i can live with, But these are some things i find to be a slight inconvenience. The battery life, is by far not its best quality. 4 hours max when using alot of apps or doing any real work, that again isn't a big issue for me. The finger prints on the lid, does not bother me, i just wipe it off. The harddrive could've been a 7200rpm for faster read/write speeds however i plan on upgrading that later. The Speakers are not the best in quality and could've been a little bit better. Make sure you select Playback Devices > Speakers > Speaker Properties > Enhancements > Loudness Equalization. The only bad thing i can say about this laptop is the Power adapter port. It is a bit annoying when laying in bed, or at a chair, it tends to "come lose" and unplug once in a while. Also the fact there is a "Bluetooth" button that has "no function". kinda odd but again doesn't bother me. It says "no device" when pushed.

Other Thoughts: I can't contest to the quality of the built in Mic, or Webcam as i have not used them. Same goes for the VGA or HDMI ports. however, being able to watch full 720P and some 1080P HD movies, Trailers, and other HD content live (like MLB HD Live for games) or Streaming online is great! When you watch Netflix online in HD its just like watching it on your larger LCD or LED tv's, crystal clear, which shows that the ATI 5650 with 1gig of dedicated ram is a must for HD users. The overall weight of the laptop is fairly good. if it was maybe 1 - 1.5lbs lighter but with the amount of features i'm okay with it. This is by far one of the best laptops on the market for under 800$ I compaired to an ASUS and MSI Laptop and my old Acer Timeline but this Acer 5740g-6979 is a beast to reckon with! As always Newegg showed me great shipping. I highly suggest this laptop to anyone weather its for Gaming, Graphics Design, or browsing!! 5 eggs all the way! Just remove all the un needed apps pre installed.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Buy!!! If you're worried about beeping read my "other thoughts"

Pros: Fast little bugger, it tears apart dawn of war 2 and eve online with no problem. I haven't done a lot of multitasking on it yet but I'm sure it could handle it well also. The video camera is nice, I tested it with some skyping to my brother and it had a nice resolution and generally steady frames. Seems strudily constructed and looks sexy on the inside, smooth on the outside.

Cons: No backlight on the keyboard, the mouse buttons seem to have some extra click to them. Attracts cat hair, dust and fingerprints like glue. The bottom gets fairly warm, it has never burnt me but it looks like its starting to burn through the sticker by the fans in just the three days I've had it! Disclaimer: I have been using it pretty intensely and kept it on for over 20 hours straight my first day with it.

Other Thoughts: I upgraded from Windows XP and a four year old, albeit still semi-powerful, desktop. The change is quite nice and I'm really enjoying Win7. The beeping when the charger is plugged/unplugged was quite irritating, but super easy to get rid of. Just go to Acer's website and redownload your audio drivers. Once the computer restarts Windows will automatically install the newer driver and voila! no more beeping. I also got it for 699 flat on sale a week ago, even at its slightly higher price I would still recommend it!

1 out of 5 eggsPoor

Pros: Nice Gaming Graphics, Quick for everything....

Cons: Gets very hot while gaming, fan or cpu makes an unbearable high pitched sound. Got blue screen of death after 5 days of owning it. Had to send it back to Newegg.... :( and pay the shipping to send it back which was 65 dollars!!! very unpleased with acer!

Other Thoughts: Wouldn't Buy this if I could do it all over again!

4 out of 5 eggsUpdate my review

Pros: I don't think they are coming with bad graphics cards. I think the problem is either the CCC software, ATI drivers or the Acer BIOS itself. Which means you don't have to return the computer. Try using all the updates you can and turnoff the "Power Play." If that doesn't fix the problem then maybe the graphics card is defective. Otherwise I think it's just software.

Cons: Graphics card problems - maybe resolved. I called Newegg returns because the don't give technical suppport to see if they had any info about the graphics card problems. They were no help at all, but said try the Acer website. I did try the fix mentioned about turning off the "Power Play" under graphics from the CCC. So far so good. I moved my score up to 4 eggs, because I'm not sure all the updates will work, but I'm hoping they will. I still don't like the single mouse button.

Other Thoughts: Everyone should check their BIOS version. My computer came with 1.09. They have updates to 1.10, 1.16 and 1.22. I updated to 1.22 the latest and maybe that will also help not have the graphic "red checked boxes" appearing. Newegg is not going to be much help here. You have to return it and then they'll check it out, to see if it's really broke. They'll probably install all the latest drivers and it won't fail. So then you'll get you computer back, the same as it was mechanically, and you're out the shipping charges. Save time and do the updates yourself and if it's really broke after that, then send it back. Don't waste time if you haven't done that first.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesomeness

Pros: It's all good! For my first laptop I'm absolutely loving it. Got it on hardcore sale, couldn't pass up the sweet deal!

Cons: Built-in speakers aren't great but really doesn't matter since I can plug in my own. Touch pad is a bit strange feeling to my finger but that's fine, always planned to use a mouse.

Other Thoughts: Just do it!

3 out of 5 eggsSame problems as AS7740G-6364 model

Pros: Same as what others have said.

Cons: You should also look at the AS7740G-6364, with 17.3 in display as I have experienced the same issues with my Acer Aspire AS5740G-6979. I too have had the red "checkered boxes" come across the screen. One person has said there is a fix, which I haven’t tried yet: “To address the issue many people are having: the "checker board screen of death" even after updating the Radeon drivers. I found a YouTube video showing the same problem, and one of the commentators said to turn off the Power Play option in the ATI Catalyst settings.” Two other issues which is also the same: The seesaw touch pad button is hard to press left/right click on the button. It looks like you’re going to eventually break the button in half by pressing it so hard many times on either the right or left side. They just should have just had two separate buttons. Like other people said for the 17.3 in model, the battery life sucks. I too have only been able to squeeze 2 hours of battery life at the most.

Other Thoughts: In summary, I’m hoping I really don’t have a defective video card. I’m going to have to call Newegg and see what they having been doing about this. When they get them back have they determined that they are really defective? If so, I’m going to have to send it back, which I hate to do but I don’t want a defective product.
If the graphics card isn't defective, I would have given it 4 or 5 eggs. The battery life and mousepad button would be the only drawbacks.
