3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Svelte and handsome, like most Acer products. Reasonably high specs for a laptop at the time, yet also among the most lightweight. Relatively inexpensive.

Cons: In the hands of an aging parent this has suffered a shattered LCD and broken screen hinge, each a separate incident. It seems the low price and low weight come at the expense of build quality. The entire exterior is made of flimsy plastic which in most places is simply snapped together, and some of the internals are held in place with only epoxy.

The stock screen is glossy, which looks shiny and clear in a store but in real world use means you need to tilt it at a particular angle to reduce glare.

Keyboard back plate isn't particularly firm, and after a while will collapse inward slightly, causing key-presses to fail to connect.

Other Thoughts: Damaging the screen turned out to be a blessing in disguise. I was able to replace it with a much more usable matte screen.

5 out of 5 eggsFLAT OUT AWESOME!!!

Pros: Besides being light and stylish, what I like most about this laptop are the speakers! I've been looking all around for a laptop that will play my iTunes well and this one does the trick!!! On top of that I really like the speed at which tasks are performed. I don't do a lot of heavy tasks, mainly spreadsheets, word documents, and internet surfing, but it is definitely much faster than my old laptop. If you want a great laptop, I highly recommend getting this one!!!

Cons: Only one hiccup on installation, the wifi profile I created during the registration process (first boot) did not transfer correctly to windows so I had to call tech support to figure out why I was connected to my wifi but not to the internet. It was a simple fix of simply deleting the old wifi profile and restarting the problems after that. Also I a bit surprised that 30 gigs of the harddrive has been partitioned as a restore feature and not available to the user.

2 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Size, weight, and stats look good...if it actually worked. Hopefully my first one was just a fluke.

Cons: Mine was DOA...put in battery and plugged in for the first time per manual but power light just kept blinking; no boot nor did the screen turn on...Called Acer and they said it was defective and would take 10-14 days to repair. Newegg offered an advanced replacement with next day shipping. Newegg is the best company ever...Acer could learn a thing or two from them.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat notebook for the price

Pros: Excellent performance for the money, sturdy construction (better than expected from the reviews I read before purchase), thin and light enough to be carried around comfortably for long period of time, above average battery life, and lastly, very quiet and doesn't run hot when CPU intensifies.

Cons: Flimsy and shallow USB ports! This is my biggest grip with this machine, the ports are so shallow that 1/3 of the plug is extended outward, slight touch will cause the connector to fall out. This brings to my second complaint, 3 USB ports out of 4 are aligned on the right side, exactly where the right hand/wrist movement will cause the connectors to become loose.

LCD is good for watching movies due to slight warm red hue tint, but bad for photo editing. I calibrated it and it's better now but it still has warmer hue than my other laptops.

Other Thoughts: I didn't buy this laptop from newegg since I have $100 coupon to use with another merchant. Overall, it is a very good notebook for the price, I only paid $500 for it so for that price it is a 5-star machine. i3 packs enough power for daily business use and is decent enough when some entertainment is required. I don't play games, so no thoughts on that aspect. And it is a slim build for a 14-inch, probably the best looking one in its price range.

3 out of 5 eggsGood, but not amazing

Pros: Excellent specs for the money, built-in graphics are actually more than adequate. 14" is the largest size you'd be able to comfortably carry around with you. Side vents prevent the laptop from getting too hot while sitting on your lap, and even the $1100 MacBook doesn't have them!

Good quality webcam.

Cons: Battery life under real-world situations like 80-90% brightness while surfing sites like YouTube is about 3.5 hours; even under light use it's about 4-5 hours. Because battery life was my primary reason to purchase this laptop over others, -1 egg.

Too much bloatware! Doesn't matter if everyone else does it; it doesn't make it OK! I decided to install a clean copy of Windows 7, and just reinstall the drivers from the Acer's website, and now everything's alright.

There are no included recovery disks, you must burn all four of them yourself.

The trackpad is too small; I keep running out of room as I move my fingers across it. Increasing sensitivity doesn't help because the trackpad becomes too inaccurate. The multitouch features aren't anywhere near as well-developed as those on my friend's MacBook, to the point that I simply disabled the multitouch features that I was so excited to use.

Annoying glossy screen, quiet speakers, and weak microphone.

Other Thoughts: The appearance is merely OK; the outside cover gets too many fingerprints on it, but looks nice nonetheless.

I know I've really bashed this thing, but it's only in the interest of giving you guys a TRUE idea of what this laptop is like. The 5 star reviews are really misleading when the real thing is just "alright".

Intel's new line of CPUs is coming out soon, with AMD's competitors on the way. If you can survive with the clunker laptop you have now, I suggest you do it so that, in a few months, you can get a laptop with the new CPUs, and thus, better performance and battery life for the same price.

4 out of 5 eggsEasily Replaced my Netbook and some Desktop Work.

Pros: I was looking for something to replace my 2yr old Asus EEEPC and this did just that. The video performance is far superior to the Atom. No more waiting for heavily flashed web sites to load along with full HD video from sites like Vimeo. It is a little heavier but the performance improvement and screen size make it an easy trade off. The only time I hear the HDD or fan is when there is virtually no background noise in the room. It runs cool and the video performance is excellent for everything but heavy gaming (My desktop fills this role). This is the first Intel Graphics Chipset that I am really satisfied using. I even loaded up a couple of Linux games that play just fine at 1024x768.

Cons: USB ports on the LH side of the chassis are to close to the user end of the system. This makes it hard to plug in devices while it is sitting on your lap. The aluminium top cover is a fingerprint magnet. The junk-ware as others have mentioned is really unnecessary. I also don't like the fact that you have to create your own OS backup, this should have been included.

Other Thoughts: To be honest I have not been using the Windows 7 partition much. I shrunk it down by 125GB and installed Ubuntu 10.10. I will say that this is the first Linux install I have ever performed that worked perfectly out-of-the box. No video problems, audio problems, the Intel video driver works perfectly running Compiz. Alien Arena and Nexuiz play just fine at 1024x768. Thanks New Egg.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome for the price, best laptop I've ever owned

Pros: Sturdy build and nice stainless-looking surfaces that make this laptop look like it should cost much more. Keyboard is also very sturdy and easy to clean out. Very light, compact, long battery life (I get about 7 hours), extremely fast for such a small machine and runs everything I throw at it (except graphics-intensive games of course). Good number of USB ports, HDMI is nice.

Cons: Lots of bloatware which does take a few hours to uninstall. But then, I don't think any brand of laptop is free of the scourge that is bloatware. The contrast ratio is really low and colors are rather desaturated, and it takes a while to get used to. I've tried fiddling with the graphics card settings but it doesn't do much good.

Other Thoughts: Despite the bloatware and low contrast ratio, this is easily the best laptop for the price. I compared everything on Newegg and couldn't find a single laptop of any brand that had better specs than this one for the same general price. This is great for business and school, which is what I use it for.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Laptop

Pros: Good build, great weight, keyboard feels good (chicklet type keys) superb power management -- everything that is needed for a portable machine without comprising size. Performance is good and runs everything that is thrown at it. For the price, you cannot beat this laptop.

Cons: Pre-installed with bloatware. Most of the USB ports are on the right side of the machine which may get in the way when using the mouse when devices are plugged in. For some, the touch pad may get in the way while typing resulting in the cursor moving to a different location.

The machine comes with Win 7 Home Premium which is fine for many; however, for domain authentication one will have to upgrade to Win 7 pro. This seems to be a problem because when I downloaded the drivers, the wireless adapter would not install correctly. I called support and they were unable to resolve the issue -- this happened on two machines.

Other Thoughts: All-and-all a great machine for the price. It looks professional and the stainless type finish makes this laptop look as it should be twice as much. I seem to average about 5-6 hours of battery life and it stays nice and cool. I looked at a lot of laptops and if you're in the market, I highly suggest the Acer TimelineX series.

5 out of 5 eggsBest laptop I've owned so far

Pros: 14" laptop with a lot of power
very thin and portable
great build quality
big step up from the standard Acer models
very bright screen
pretty solid keyboard

Cons: screen has low contrast ratio

Other Thoughts: I actually bought the AS4820TG with the i5 and ATI 5650 dedicated. I wanted to write a review mainly on the physical quality.

This is one of the best laptops I've ever owned. The build quality to my surprise is very good. I have owned Acer, Sony , Apple Macbooks, HP, Samsung and Toshiba laptops. Comparing the Timelinex series, this is very comparable to higher end laptops. There is a good amount of aluminum to keep a sturdy feel. The keyboard does have a slight flex to it but nothing too noticeable. The nice thing is that it has some weight to it so it doesn't feel cheap. I use to have a lower end Acer laptop and it did feel cheap but this is a big step up!

The only downside is the screen is not as sharp as I would like. Comparing to some of the newer Sony Vaios, it doesnt have the contrast ratio. Other than that this laptop is almost perfect.

With great battery life, powerful internals, and pretty good build quality I have to say this is by far the best laptop I have owned
