4 out of 5 eggsI'm happy

Pros: I got exactly what I was expecting. A big display, High def, a separate number keypad and hdmi out. Gets a lot of attention at airports.

Cons: Battery life, need to install different software like Powerdvd if you want to play your BR's using HDMI out to a hdtv. Lots of Sony bloatware of course, Vista

Other Thoughts: I was hesitant trying Vista for the first time because I haven't heard good things. There are a few areas i'm not happy with but overall it's not too bad.

1 out of 5 eggsSpend your cash on something else

Pros: Looks really nice. The screen is the biggest "buzz" on this beast. But it pretty much ends there for me and this review.

Newegg refunded me the money back after I had two RMA's go bad.

Cons: I bought 2 of these, one for me and one for my wife. She's a graphics consultant and I'm an IT consultant that plays with photoshop and 3ds max.

I spent 8 hours installing my apps, plugged in a usb mouse and the system froze up. Had to remove the battery to reboot the thing. After it came up there was a constant usb notification that I had plugged in something and then removed it. I had never plugged the mouse back in after it froze. I got this message about once every 30 seconds. I couldn't take it anymore, I couldn't use the speakers because of the annoying *ding* every 30 seconds.

I sent it back and got a replacement. New computer... new problem. Now after another 10 hours installing my apps the monitor (yes, the big pretty one) starts mooshing into nothingness. The picture goes away, I have no screen to speak of. This went on for a day or so until I pleaded my case with a newegg manager to get a refund.

I cannot urge you strongly enough to spend your $1500 on something e

Other Thoughts: I'm going to be getting the ASUS M70 instead (newegg item# N82E16834220412). Much better reviews on that one for just a little more cash.

5 out of 5 eggsSONY HAS A HIT HERE

Pros: Great prcessor, great video, Blu-Ray, Vista 64-bit, this system works great. Bought for my son Christmas 2008 and he is so happy. gaming has never been better, except he kills me in Madden 2008. Every inch a power house.

Cons: As with most laptops, sound. However, we added some very small portable speakers and it was 100% better.

Other Thoughts: Larger hard drive spinning at 7200 would be nice.

2 out of 5 eggsCommon problem

Pros: Screen.

Cons: usb device issues

Other Thoughts: Big sorry for Sony. I spent so many hours on the phone trying to resolve "USB device not recognized" issue up to restoring laptop to the original factory state and it was no luck. I ended up with suggestion to send it for the repair. I went to the sony store and those guy couldn't figure what the problem was neither so they sent it to the repair center. It took me almost one month to get my laptop back but when I received it I found the inclosed paper that nothing wrong was with the computer and that they didn't find anything. also their customer service supervisor let me know that he don't care about whatever happened. When I got it back It was no error though. almost two moths later I am having same problem. I am speechless now as I don't know who to ask for this problem because sony is no help at all. No more sony. never.

5 out of 5 eggsAs expected of Sony

Pros: High quality craftsmanship, what one would expect in a good Japanese product. Made of a very sturdy plastic. Basically what I expected performance-wise. Very nice display for a laptop. Stays cooler than I expected.

Cons: Viewing angles on the display could be better, I think that it is a TN panel but as far as I know one would be hard pressed to find a laptop that had any other type of panel. The power LED is annoyingly bright.

Other Thoughts: Good luck finding a bag to fit this thing.

5 out of 5 eggsYes! It is expandable, but...

Pros: Same as on my past two reviews.

The text below is an addendum to the notes on "Other thoughts":

If you bought this computer (as I did) for $1,399, investing an additional $750 will add a secondary 250GB 7200RPM drive and 8GB of RAM. Quite an investment, yes, but an Alienware custom-built to the same specs as this machine will cost you about $3,049 and still be 1.4" inches short on the monitor (with a maximum display resolution of 1440 x 900) and weight about 11 pounds. That's a little over two pounds more than this VAIO, which is also sleeker and thinner.

We're talking about a $950 difference. Almost a grand!!! And the VAIO still offers more display real estate.

The priciest add-on is the memory, but I guess you can always sell the removed SODIMMs and get some money back. So... $750 will get this baby on steroids and add a couple more years of usability. Not bad.

Please read below for further details about expanding this computer's capabilities...

Cons: None really. The more I use this baby, the more I like it.

I still haven't found the perfect backpack for it, though, but that's the fault of the people who make the backpacks. Come on guys!!! Catch up!!!

Other Thoughts: After doing some thorough research I found the answer to my questions:

Yes, you can install a second HD.

BUT... for this particular model you have to buy the following parts:

PART# 1-730-230-11 (M780 SATA HDD2 FPC) This is the connector cable which costs about $82.00

PART# X-2320-154-1 (M780 HDD BRACKET SUB-ASSY) The drive caddy, which costs about $43.00

Ths installation requires considerable technical knowledge so unless you're completely sure of what you're doing, have a qualified Sony tech. do it (which'll cost you about $30).

The recommended HD is Hitachi's HTS723225L9A360 TravelStar 7K320 which retails for about $70 (this is the same drive that comes with the computer). You can buy a different drive at a Sony Store but it'll cost you $130+.

And YES you can upgrade the RAM to 8GB.

BUT... so far the only 8GB (4GB x 2 DDR2 PC2-6400 800MHz 200-pin SODIMMs) expansion kit available costs $525 (available from Newegg). Ouch!

5 out of 5 eggsBe aware of possible expandability limitations

Pros: 4GB memory stock; 512MB nVidia video RAM; 7200RPM drive; beautiful 18.4" screen; Blue-ray drive; very light (considering its massive size); sleek looks.

This one runs much cooler than my previous laptop (a 17" Toshiba Satellite P105-S9339) and is also lighter even though it's larger.

Cons: RAM may not be expanded beyond the stock 4GB; second hard drive may not be installable at all.

Very hard to find a backpack or case where it'll fit snugly.

Other Thoughts: This is the second review I've written about now that I've worked with (and on) this laptop for about a month. One of the key selling points for me was its expandability. Originally, the specs claimed the RAM could be expanded to 8GB. Now Newegg has changed that to 4GB. On the Sony website, however, you can order a configurable AW with 8GB RAM, but I'm wondering if the slots are different as I'm having a very hard time finding 200-pin 4GB DIMMS. You can also buy it configured with two internal hard drives, but upon opening the drive bay of the AW190JAH (although the space is there), I noticed there's no SATA connection. I even talked to a local Sony Store service tech and he wasn't sure whether or not this was possible as the AW series is rather new and unfamiliar to many.

Be aware that you might be stuck with 4GB RAM and no second internal hard drive option. Then again, maybe not. Even so, this computer was a great purchase at $1,399 (price has gone up since 01/16).

5 out of 5 eggsGreat all around laptop!

Pros: Elegant looking, big, nice screen with little or no glare, no backlighting issues, lightweight for size (can be transported easily enough without strain), sound quality nice, love the full keyboard, plays Blue Ray great. Handles games with no problems on high settings, and as a Web designer this laptop rocks!

Cons: This is my second Sony and as with the first, making recovering disks is a pain. USB's quit working when doing updates. Solution: remove battery and let total power drain. Still having some issues with Bluetooth and Fingerprint reader. Lots of unnecessary programs pre-installed but easy enough to remove. I hate bloatware.

Other Thoughts: This is a great machine for the price whether you are a gamer, designer or just novice user. As a side note, finding a laptop bag to fit this bad boy is a little hard.

4 out of 5 eggsNo docking station available

Pros: Does everything a laptop should do - except

Cons: I have not been able to find a docking station that will work with it. Even called Sony support and they did not have one and could not recommend one. Most universal docking stations do not support 64-bit processor.

Other Thoughts: This computer is not very portable if you have to plug in numerous periphials every time you want to use it.

5 out of 5 eggsHappy, and Informed

Pros: HD resolution, Audio, and speed are huge for a laptop!
I am a student (3D animation) use this for Maya & 3ds Max, but mostly it is my After Effects portable tool! oh, and it drives a 37" HDTV with no problems.

Cons: Its Vista, however 64-bit seems to be working even if it is only Home Premium. Would have liked an eSata port for my External HDD.

Other Thoughts: other reviewers, I also do not like getting a PC with NO DVD back-Up, but in reading the Vaio recovery center(seriously look into it) Sony has created a system Factory install that is on the Hard Disk, and it works!-learned that from the tech-support. And it runs from the Vaio Recovery Center.
Now granted there are alot of useless Apps installed, but to get a clean wipe and re-install, took under 30 minutes. Also, after I did that I was able to Shrink the C-drive and gain 100GB(from the 250 total) to partition the way I like for apps and a Page file(did not work before I did the Factory Re-Install). Myself-guilty of writing off how the pre-builts tend to be a pain to get working or having to make my own recovery discs(I build most of my PC's)
But it only takes a small amount of time to learn something New, and patience pays off usually. Kudos to Sony, there Tech-support gets an A (which is big... Asus whom I rely on has HORRIBLE tech-support!) Thanx Again NEWEGG!!!!
