2 out of 5 eggsNot worth the effort

Pros: Tablet feels and appears to be solid. The hinged keyboard slide is novel and folds away nicely to use this in tablet mode when needed. The tablet PC is very responsive and sips energy well.

Cons: Upon opening the box, it generally appeared as if the container had been opened before, although the safety seal was intact. Upon firing the tablet PC up, installing my own software (Office 365 and updating Kaspersky to Pure 3.0), I discovered that the Windows key was nowhere to be found. Upon Windows activation, I discovered that the key was in use by another computer.

Hesitant to pull the trigger, given the 29 pages on a different site discussing the WiFi issues, I chose to take my chances when it appeared that the higher-end versions of this tablet PC lacked the same shortfalls as discussed in some recent posts. Unfortunately, I must report that at least in this instance, they have not. In my office, this device was unable to negotiate more than one unreliable (read in-and-out) bar from a node on the same floor and only ~25 yards away (through an open door and unobstructed pass right to the antenna in the hallway). This was with the tablet placed flat upon a conference table with only ~10 wireless users at the time in the building (and none in the conference room). At the same time, my Nokia 920 had all 4 bars displayed. Unfortunately, I had to tether the two to make it through my first meeting with the tablet to take notes.

I took my chances with this tablet PC, and even before performing any type of installs, updated the Sony software as well as the MS patches to no avail. The wireless capabilities of this device, unfortunately, make its hardware strengths moot. If I cannot connect, reliably and capably to routers (attempted to 7 or 8 different routers in different locations, both home, work and local hotspots) with little difficulty, this device offers few benefits for me as a business owner. When coupled with the fact that I received a previously owned/RMA'd/???'d machine which was offered as new, as evidenced by a Windows 8 license key which was already in-use, I too will return this device and let another take their chances.

Other Thoughts: Great hardware setup and many bells and whistles to catch the consumer's eye such as the Haswell i7 processor and very capable touchscreen/stylus pen, unfortunately Sony has stubbed their toe by using inferior WiFi technology, thereby limiting a user's ability to enjoy this product to its fullest potential. It is an all-too-familiar exhibit of a company rushing an unfinished product to be first-to-market without fully testing advertised capabilities. As another author mentioned, this experience has helped me decide between the upcoming Xbox One and PS4. In this case, Microsoft will be receiving two large purchases in their October tablet and November gaming launches.

1 out of 5 eggsSony Duo 13

Pros: Very nice unit. Super fast speed with i7 CPU and 8GB RAM. I really loved the computer and tried two of them from Sony.

Cons: Terrible wireless using internal Broadcom adapter. Worst range & speed I have experienced on any computer. Still no fix from Sony. Tried 2 units direct from Sony but returned both due to awful wireless performance.

Other Thoughts: I would buy this device if I knew Sony fixed the wireless issue.

1 out of 5 eggsGreat Machine on paper, poor drivers or design

Pros: Amazing machine (With exception of issues noted below)

Great form factor

Very thin and portable laptop

Great battery life

Unrivaled specs

Digitizer is a great add on

Boot Time and Standby times are very fast.

Login via face recognition using the webcam worked well most of the time.

Level 2 tech support was very knowledgeable and in fact initiated calls with me to troubleshoot the registry to see if Kaspersky had left registry errors. They also followed up with improvements for the wireless settings.

Cons: Inconsistent touch screen. (Will commonly leave you with drivers in failed Code 43 state meaning, no touch input at all).

Worst wireless range I've ever seen. Anything more than 10 feet and your wireless drops to about 1/2 speed.

Second DUO 13 I had shipped with no drivers installed for the touchpad which meant that the cursor was horribly jittery and constantly got stuck and the clicking worked 1 out of every 6 times. Manually installing Synaptic drivers fixed this. Included Sony Update software did not install the synaptic drivers

Not upgradeable for RAM.
Sony tech support is not suited for handling this product yet. They told me to reseat the soldered RAM in order to troubleshoot the Blue Screen errors I was having.
Touch pad is very small fortunately, with the touch screen you won't miss it much.

Uninstalling Kasperksy when I got the laptop left me unable to use the touchscreen, touchpad or keyboard. It corrupted driver settings and left me doing a system restore within minutes of opening the box. If I redid the purchase I would definitely opt for the Fresh Start option without value add software

Sony also hassled me about the being past the 30 day return policy because they were handling all warranty/return dates based on purchase date which was 2 months before I received the first unit and not the ship date. Being persistent finally got me to a customer service rep that was willing to use the ship date to qualify the return. In fact one Sony rep flat out lied to me about contacting Sony store to verify ship date.

Getting an RMA for the second unit which failed on Day 2 with the same issues was much easier.

Other Thoughts: Hidden in the Sony Control panel is options that override how the screen back light operates. It ignores the windows settings and uses ambient light sensor to dim the screen. Unfortunately it dims it to an almost unusable level so I had to disable that feature and instead relied on the windows back light control.

It'll be a sad day when I pack up the second DUO 13 to send back. It was a great machine when it worked and I can't find any other Ultrabook I like as much as far as specs go.

3 out of 5 eggsVAIO DUO 13

Pros: Built in keyboard is great. Speed is excellent. Stylus response is good. Battery life is amazing

Cons: Wireless card is horrible!!! Does not have range.

Other Thoughts: I have a Samsung Ativ 700. The Ativ's keyboard has a major issue of loosing connection while you are typing which was becoming incredibly irritating so i purchased the Duo 13. Overall this thing is great. The processor lets me work in CAD docs and large PDF's with NO lag. The keyboard and touch pad work well...though the "feel" is not there when you are typing (hard to explain). Sony put a back light in the keyboard which works great!!
The only complaint i really have with this tablet is that the wireless card is horrible. In places (side by side) where i have full service on my Ativ i have only one or two bars on the Sony!!! It also pops into "limited connection" all the time forcing me to disconnect and reconnect to attain internet...
