5 out of 5 eggsStill a strong contender

Pros: Light, sleek, durable, very portable, powerful

Cons: Only two USB ports. Once in a while I find myself wishing for a third.

Other Thoughts: Purchased this little beast a while back to replace an HP dinosaur which was a laptop in name only. This little Samsung was a good choice and has never given me a moments trouble.

That being said, and in a spirit of full disclosure, when I purchased it, I also purchased a replacement 128G SSD upon which I soon installed Fedora Linux. (currently ver. 21)

Without the notorious extra "weight" of the Microsoft Windows 8 OS, this laptop is snappy fast and plenty versatile enough for even the most demanding user. My interest is both business and graphics work, and with the screen resolution and quality here, it makes a perfect mobile digital darkroom platform for graphics work and photo manipulation, (GIMP, Inkscape, Cinepaint, etc.) which is still versatile enough to run web apps and business software (LibreOffice) with the best of 'em.

In short, yes. I would definitely buy it again, and would do so in a heartbeat.

5 out of 5 eggsSlim, Light, Rugged, Powerful, Perfect

Pros: Slim, Light, Rugged, Powerful. Wonderful high resolution screen, that is very bright. Firm keyboard, with good key layout - feels natural. Large responsive touchpad (I haven't had any of the issues that others here have mentioned). Long battery life (8+ hours).

Cons: OK, one minor quibble: the SD card slot isn't deep enough - a card will stick out from it when inserted, so can't be left in there semi-permanently for fear of it breaking off. But given the size of this machine this is forgivable.

Other Thoughts: I bought this last month at the Microsoft Store on special offer: $1000 for a Core i5, 4GB of RAM, 128GB SSD and 3200x1800 screen referenced here . This is absolutely the MacBook Air killer - same size and weight, but with a touch screen that is higher resolution. In the 4 weeks I've had this laptop I haven't found a thing wrong with it. The screen is beautiful and bright. The keyboard is firm and easy to use. The touchpad is large and responsive. The size and weight are superb, especially for a machine of this caliber. Everything feels like high-end quality on this machine. The "special function" keys are nicely laid out. I've had no problems with the WiFi around the house (both 2.4GHz and 5.0GHz). I spent a few hours upgrading to Windows 8.1 (it was supplied with 8.0), adding other Microsoft updates, installing other software (Google products, MS Office, many utilities, software development tools, and more) and personalizing it to my liking (screen resolutions, themes/backgrounds, power settings etc.). Also added Classic Shell to put the "Start" button (and menu) back where it should be. For general purpose portable use this machine is perfect.

2 out of 5 eggsFIX THE TOUCHPAD!!

Pros: Great screen. Good battery life. Skinny, light beautiful

Cons: Top half of touch pad doesn't work, really buggy.
Have to buy special VGA dongle

Other Thoughts: Love using this laptop, until the top half of the touch pad stops working. I have tried everything to get this issue fixed. I am 99.9% sure that it is a software issue, as putting the computer into sleep and then waking it up again immediately fixed it again... for about 10 minutes. It is right on the edge between usable and useless.

Samsung support didn't help. Seriously Samsung, you need to fix this issue ASAP. This is not an isolated event, I have already read multiple other accounts of the exact same issue online. It is embarrassing that you are shipping a $1500 laptop with a problem that wouldn't be acceptable in a used $100 laptop.

1 out of 5 eggsNot ready for prime time

Pros: -Lightweight, battery life good

Cons: Plagued by a number of issues, the Samsung Ativ book 9 series looks great and has potential, but is not ready for prime time:

-First experience out of the box: Samsung Touchpad has a bug in the driver software and you cannot use the top half of the touchpad.

I returned the unit to the factory and they claimed that they replaced the hardware and motherboard. However, when it came back the samsung ATIV book 9 touchpad bug is still present. Touchpad won't allow use of the top half of the touchpad in Win 8.1.

-Samsung support: When unit was returned for repair, it came back with a dent on the bottom of the unit. Samsung service didn't offer any compensation for the damage they caused on my new laptop.

-Doesn't ship with windows 8.1 so you need to spend the first hour upgrading it to 8.1.

-Hard drive storage: when you remove the bloatware on the PC, you end up with about 78GB of storage. Samsung stores backup of windows, etc in a protected area, making only around half of the 128GB available for your use.

Other Thoughts: If you can, wait to buy the next version of this unit. They are still working out the bugs with Windows 8.1 drivers.

Manufacturer Response:

1 out of 5 eggsbroke after 2 months, while downloading win 8 drivers

Pros: Light, thin, gorgeous (touch) screen, decent specs

Cons: Broke after 2 months of use. Downloading drivers for windows 8.1, left it unattended for minutes, when came back the screen was off, fans were at the maximum, it has been a brick ever since.

Other Thoughts: For the money spent I should have gotten a better deal. Apple would have been a much better option. I will see how the warranty team responds but needless to say I am very disappointed in this product and in Samsung.

4 out of 5 eggsSo far so good

Pros: Fast and light weight. Good battery life

Cons: Screen currently has a bit of the same issue as the Yoga 2, the yellows in battery appear a bit mustard in color than yellow.

Other Thoughts: Overall I really find this ultra-book a great purchase. All four of the main Haswell based devices seem to have some growing pains right now, most are hardware based and some are software.

The Sony VAIO Pro 13 has some WiFi issues, the ASUS has some keyboard issues, the Lenovo Yoga 2 has some WiFi issues as well as color profile issues. This rascal shares the same color issues (yellow) with the Yoga. Of all of them, this seems to be the only one that is limted to a software based issue and software can be fixed.

The core display issue that is common on the Yoga and the ATIV Book 9 Plus is an issue with maintaining vivid yellows in battery mode. Its a bit more noticeable on the Yoga than the Samsung. While noticeable (once you know about it) it's not something you would get stuck on. The assumption is that this will be addressed on both platforms with a graphics driver update and/or color profile.

My unit shipped with Windows 8 (non-pro) 64bit. I did update very easily to 8.1 from the Windows Store. After removing some of the junk software that is packaged with the device I had about 79GB free in the SSD. Not too bad considering I left the recovery partition for now.

The screen res is insane. Out of the box, the unit comes up at 1920x1080 with 125% scaling and it actually looks pretty good. You wouldn't notice that it's set that way. Change it to the native res at 100% scaling and things are very small.

WiFi reception seems strong and the unit fully wakes from sleep before I get the lid opened.

I had originally thought I'd hold out for the 8GB, 256GB SSD, i7 version but I'm glad I pulled the trigger on this one. I wasn't looking for a desktop replacement, just a fast, light, long battery life ultra-book for day to day use.

Daily usage includes includes Visual Studio 2013 and Office 2013. I do not edit photo's or video on the device.

With my usage patterns (screen about 60% brightness, WiFi on, Bluetooth off ), I'm getting a good 7+ hours on the battery. As I have been working through charge cycles I am starting to see the battery life inch it's way up. I will not be surprised to top 8 hours by next week.

For grins, I installed Steam and Civ 5 (about the only game I play) and the game runs pretty well on Medium across the board so for light gaming the HD4400 is capable. One issue I did have was Civ 5 doesn't like the 125% DPI scaling so running full screen games would probably require a regular 100% scaling factor on the desktop - or not.

As it stands, I give this 4 eggs. The fifth egg will require fixing the slight yellow issue. Even with the one small issue, I would certainly recommend this to anyone looking for a forth generation Intel ultra-book.
