1 out of 5 eggsDONT BUY MSI!!!

Other Thoughts: NA

Manufacturer Response:

Dear JW,

We apologize for the issues you experienced with this notebook.

When you say the display is cracking, do you mean the LCD screen? If so, this is considered physical damage so it wouldn't be covered under any warranty. We can still help you get the laptop repaired, but there will be repair charges. Please contact us if you have any questions. Thank you.

Best Regards,
MSI Review Team

5 out of 5 eggsAlmost Perfect

Pros: Powerful computer in a small package. So far, it has handled all the games I have tossed at it with ease. The machine is also mostly quiet and doesn't heat up nearly as much as I thought it would.

Cons: Resolution. I can't knock an egg off for it since it is specified. I didn't realize how much I would miss 1920 x 1080. But the reality is, this machine can run everything at its native resolution. Most machines at 1920 x 1080 can't handle the graphic requirements.

Bloatware. Lots of it, but surprisingly easy to clear it out.

Other Thoughts: I wanted to downsize from a 17' gaming machine but i didn't want to abandon my games. This machine was perfect for that. I can still play the games (albeit with less of the stunning beauty). But I can also take this think off the charger for more than an 40 minutes. All in all, I am very pleased

5 out of 5 eggsVery good for the price

Pros: I've been looking around for a laptop replacement for about six months now. I wanted a Sandy bridge chipset along with a discrete graphics card that was good enough to play games a little bit when needed and a good enough CPU to last a few years, but the laptop also had to be small enough to move around easily too.

This MSI laptop is THE best combination of all of those factors is this price range.

I've run this laptop though CPU and GPU torture tests and there are no throttling issues unlike the Acers. MSI seems to have installed the heat sinks correctly.

The laptop does have an actual Intel wireless NIC and Bluetooth stack which is nice. The wired Realtek NIC is Gb too.

The screen is acceptable and the price is fair given the components used.

Cons: I don't like the fact that the fan is on all of the time. Granted it's fairly quiet but none the less it's a negative in my mind. The keys seem like they could have been made a bit bigger given the room, they do feel a tiny bit small.

Other Thoughts: I've looked at the recent Acer laptops along with other brands and all of them had tradeoffs of one form or another. (the Acers have massive throtting issues due to heat) This is still the best bet you'll find.

1 out of 5 eggsDon't Get this.

Pros: Good Spec on Paper
Sharp looking

Cons: 1. CPU overheating
2. GPU overheating
3. Battery life is bad. It's more like 4 hours, not 8 hours even on batter saving mode
4. Hard to open optical driver button
5. Loud and Heats up bad whenever you use gt540m.
6. Optical drive shakes and vibrates very bad when you use them. It's so loud too.
7. Bloatwares

Other Thoughts: I had high hopes for this model but it was waste of money and my time. I tried RMA it too and msi just sent back same laptop without fixing anything. That means, there was nothing to fix coz this is the way this laptop is made. I ended up returning this laptop to newegg. I will give you good alternative option. If you want 14 inch slim laptop that has same spec as this one, get Acer 4850tg-6450 instead. It's $150 cheaper, and has better cpu and same gpu. It has optical drive and it never overheats or loud like this msi model. It also have actual 7 hours+ batter life not 2-4 hours like this msi model. I watched 3 hours of 1080p movies and 2 hours of youtube videos and it still had 40% batter life left. It's only $700 so you can use that $150 to get 120gb ssd on it too. Much better value for better laptop. This msi laptop is a big let down. Don't waste your money and time on this and get acer instead. I own 3 msi laptop and I am kind of msi fan boy too but this one is exception.

4 out of 5 eggsDecent

Pros: Fantastic performance - Starcraft II runs very smoothly on high
Good touchpad - two finger scrolling and other gestures work well
2 USB 3.0 Ports
Decent webcam
Turbo battery function - automatically disables anything unnecessary to extend battery life

Cons: Cramped keyboard when it clearly could be larger - causes lots of typos
Touchpad keys are stiff
Front cover is brushed aluminum and it stains easily

Other Thoughts: Overall a good purchase for the price

4 out of 5 eggsGood

Pros: Good Spec for 14 inch laptop.
Slimer and lighter than most 14 inch laptop out there
Good speaker for this size laptop

Cons: Battery life definitely isn't 8 hours+. I don't know how they measured this to get 8 hours+ but even on turbo battery safe mode + 30% brightness setting, you only get around 4 hours or so for wifi on watching youtube or websurfing and 2 hours for watching 1080p mkv movie file. Maybe 8 hours+ is wifi off in standby mode running absolutely nothing. Somewhat high cpu temperature but this isn't a big surprise coz pretty much all the laptop with 2nd gen i5, i7 processor runs 80c+ under full load.

Other Thoughts: It's good portable laptop but I just wish battery life was longer. I could get 7 hours of wifi websurfing and watching youtube videos out of 8 hours+ battery life measured tablet pc(acer iconia a500) so I was kinda hoping to get at least 6 hours batter life on this laptop but well, that wasn't the case. This was very false misleading advertisement coz you will never get even 5 hours+ if you are working on something on your laptop even if you are using just intel integrated gpu not discrete gpu. Shame on msi to lie us. Besides this, this is pretty much everything you can hope for this size laptop.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome so far

Pros: Honestly, for the price, this is an excellent purchase.

- Build quality is great
- A lot of laptop for under $900
- core i5 and 6gb ddr3(upgradeable to 8)
- Widi although I haven't tested that yet.
- Very long battery life
- The feel of the keyboard is great
- Touchpad is responsive
- VGA port as well as hdmi...I still need both, and a lot of laptops are starting to do away with vga ports.
- bluetooth 3.0
- USB 3.0, and plenty of usb ports
- 1 inch thick and I like the look and feel a lot
- Switching between integrated and dedicated graphics happens automagically

Cons: - Runs a little hot, especially while the dedicated graphics card is being used, but it's pretty comparable to most other laptops..especially of this size. And really not that bad, I could still play games while it's on my lap. And no crashes.
-Sound is a little tinny, but also pretty comparable to other laptops.
-Screen isn't the greatest, but once again it's comparable to what else is out there in this price range.

Other Thoughts: From what i've seen the heat and screen are the only things steering people away from this. And I have to say, if you're on the fence...give it a shot. It's been great for me thus far. Its a lot of bang for your buck. I've been able to play deus ex, hard reset, and dead island all at native resolution, and all look great. It also handles my day-to-day with ease. And handles some pretty heavy photoshop work. For the money, I couldn't be happier.

5 out of 5 eggsBest thin & light powerhouse in its price category

Pros: Fantastic specs. Fast, quiet, solid, connectable. Kept ventilated in use and padded in transit, this should last a few years.
No throttling.
NVidia switchable graphics vastly superior to ATI's. Discrete GPU in-use indicator. Display tolerable for design/photo work.
ODD drive is so light, no need to replace it with a caddy for weight benefits.
CPU not soldered in.
Onboard RAID controller, in case you replace the ODD with another HDD or SSD (note that only the main HDD bay gets 6 GB/sec - the ODD connector only does 3 GB/sec.)
Numlock and Numpad keys, Scroll Lock, Pause, Break, etc (via Function key).
Right-Ctrl key adjacent to cursor buttons (not the Windows Context button, which is a major pain to have next to the cursor keys).
Left Shift key is full size, Tab key is large, F&J have bumps for typists, keyboard is 'crumb resistant'. :) No keyboard marks on my display so far!
WiFi and Bluetooth have separate hardware toggles.
Thin & light is no longer feeble & slow. Looks n

Cons: Fingerprint magnet on smooth plastic surfaces (screen and keyboard bezels).
Power button senses the slightest contact while running, and since its touchable from the top and side, you'll occasionally hibernate or sleep.
No LED indicator on ODD to see when its is use. Also, the button to release the ODD is not visible from the top and scarcely detectable by feel, so you'll have to look up close along the side to find it (not so easy in the dark).
Speaking of the dark, this has no backlit keyboard, and the keyboard/function lights along the front edge (visible from above): however, they are just solid LED blocks - without sufficient light above the trackpad area, you can't see the 'legend' explaining what each light represents. In very dark environments, be prepared to brighten the display and tilt the screen to see the keys and lights legend.
Viewing angles very tight, screen dim!
No battery charging toggle.
Right shift is half size.
eSATA and Firewire would be nice in a perfect

Other Thoughts: No OS disc, but you can make a 3 DVD set of essentially the same thing.
As mentioned, without the THX EQ app running, the sound is tinny - not terrible, but lacking any base.
Screen is fairly dark, but colours are saturated unless display turned down to lowest.
Keyboard area wastes almost two inches.
ELANTECH touchpad slowly growing on me. Not the best, but I suggest turning off 3 or 4 of their extra wonky features that no one else has: this is probably what causes problems, and its really not bad.
Like the first reviewer, my battery lock kept unlatching by itself. It never came undone fortunately, but was *always* (never otherwise) in the unlocked position within minutes of locking it. After a week with several removals and re-connecting of the battery, mine is working now too. Weird.
Heavy for its size! Cooling primarily along *front* underside, so get an appropriate cooling pad.
Survived horrible packing job intact! Must be tougher than it looks.

Compared to the rest, its

4 out of 5 eggsNice purchase

Pros: Nice size, slim, DVD drive (I still order and rip CDs), good battery life, discreet graphics, look. Removable battery. 7200 RPM HD. Quiet as long as you don't run heavy graphics. No CPU throtling. Right-angle AC plug goes on the left side

Cons: terrible linux support. For instance, touchpad cannot be disabled via HW switch, only via SW. Nvidia optimus is not supported at all so it runs terribly hot and drains your battery. A BIOS switch for optimus would have been nice. Essentially not a linux machine.
no backlight keyboard
power button is easy to press accidentally.
power brick is too big compared to the laptop size. I understand that we need 90W, but it could be smaller. I'll buy a smaller one.
Second HD instead of DVD drive is advertized, but nowhere to find. I've also though I could remove DVD drive to lose weight, but no.
For 850 dollar I expected good sound. But it is borderline acceptable. Very low. You will need headphones for watching movies.
I runs warm under typical load. And quite hot when using Linux or running heavy graphics. So hot that I'm scared something could burn in there.

Other Thoughts: I was undecided between this machine and a cheaper Acer with similar specs. The Acer is now out-of-stock but I anyway went for the MSI because of the removable battery, which the Acer didn't have.
Screen is glossy but it doesn't bother me as much as I've thought it would.
It is a good buy. I enjoy do not regret it. If you need a Linux machine stay away of this computer (and any optimus without BIOS switch), or you will have to wait until support becomes available.
People complain about bloatware, but I find it average. Nothing that you cannot uninstall.
