2 out of 5 eggsNice, but problematic

Pros: I used this computer to play Diablo III and to run SPSS. It didn't run like a gaming computer, but it held its own for the size and price. I also installed Windows 8 and it increased the start up and battery life significantly. I think these things are a testament to the computing power of this little, inexpensive computer.

Cons: Has some graphical issues where it began getting pixellated lines across the the monitor. I upgrade the drivers and the OS which seemed to resolve the problem. However, a few months later the monitor began shutting off and the computer would become unresponsive. I eventually learned that if I rested my hand on the palm rest areas on either side of the touch pad, the computer would short circuit, the monitor would go black, and the power button would not allow the computer to shut off. The only way to shut it down and restart was to take the battery out. Even doing this would not always allow it to restart.

Other Thoughts: If this computer didn't have the occasional graphics issue and the major short circuiting flaw, I would have given this 5 stars. But since you cant appreciate the performance with a blank screen and unresponsive buttons, I wouldn't buy this again. So, I gave it two starts because when it works, it works well. When it doesn't, you just have a paperweight.

I am currently in the process of using the warranty. Luckily I was only 10 months in and had two months left when the problem got really bad. We will see how good their customer service is...

1 out of 5 eggsBad right out of the box

Pros: It's relatively light weight given it's fairly generous screen size and battery life.

Cons: Seeing the 4 star reviews from late last year I purchased two of these laptops - one for myself and one for my wife. Both of them had problems right out of the box. Adobe Reader would not install on either one, missing os icons, such as the wireless task bar icon, etc. After three months my track pad stopped working, then my control keys. I then used a usb mouse. After two more months, or just 5 months after purchase my screen stopped working.

My wife's computer started having all sorts of system malfunctions, missing system icons, and inability to connect wireless. And although we were able to get Adobe Reader working on my computer, we never got it working on hers.

1 out of 5 eggsDon't Buy

Pros: Cheap Computer

Cons: The drivers for screen brightness, webcam, volume, wifi, etc are all run out of a program created by MSI, and doesn't respond to traditional techniques in changing it. This results in problems when the program crashes and you want to turn on your wifi.

My webcam stopped working 3 months in
Right click stopped working 5 months in
Shoddy Computer

4 out of 5 eggsIm writing this review from it right now

Pros: Compact, quick start time, nice color, fair price, runs all the programs I need (MS Office, Adobe, internet, anti-virus, etc). Works well with Skype and recording low res video. The power supply is extremely small. The battery life is really about 5 hours with typical use, which is longer than most laptops I have come across. Bottom line: it gets the job done.

Cons: Lots of bloatware needs to be removed, that fan is a bit loud and is constantly on (but at least its working and keeping it cool), and it is a little slower than expected. I didn't really care for the MSIs task-bar thing, so i just uninstalled it. Battery life is not 10 hours as advertized. The battery is a bit bulky for the laptop.

Other Thoughts: I am a graduate student and use it to carry around to class and for basic course stuff (writing papers, internet, excel, SPSS, PPT, etc). I really like it for these types of tasks. I would not buy this if you are going to need a lot of processing power though. Lastly, I read some reviews that it blows hot air out the front. Its really just slightly warm air and it's not nearly as bad as I was expecting from what other reviewers had reported. You can barely feel it. Once again, I have experienced much worse from other laptops.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Perfect size.
Slim and light.
Sexy look.
Wireless gets strong signal.
8 cell battery. This thing runs as long, if not longer, than my AAO722, shows over 10 hours when idle and battery full.
Great netbook replacement.

Brazostweaker works well with this notebook, but fan still runs 24/7 even when super cool.

Cons: Fan always on. Though it's not really loud, in a competely quiet room you can hear it. It's no louder than keyboard typing really. I've yet to find a way to lower the speed, tried bios settings (don't exist) and programs designed for this (Speedfan, others) and you can't seem to be able to do it. Release a bios update for the fan MSI, people who buy AMD like to chose their own options.

Warranty sticker on the back of one of the screws (under the battery).

Can't upgrade Hard Drive without taking off the warranty sticker. Not sure why previous poster didn't mention this when he mentioned the SSD.

Can't upgrade Ram without taking off the warranty sticker, and because there is only 1 Ram slot apparently (check their website).

The weight is actually 3.85 lbs (from their website), not sure why it's listed as less on newegg (maybe for the 4 cell version). Still super light.

Other Thoughts: Really, for an inexpensive "ultraslim" notebook, which this seems to be trying to be, it's pretty sweet. Ultrabooks don't even let you change the battery though at times, let alone HD / Ram. So not being able to change those two without voiding warranty is understandable, but still a let down.

If they let you change the ram and put in an SSD without voiding warranty, and actually did something more with the fan in the bios, then I'd have given it 5 stars. If you don't plan on an SSD, or are OCD about the fan, then it really is a 5 star notebook.

WEI:
Processor : 3.9
Memory : 5.9
Aero : 4.6
Gaming : 5.9
Hard drive: 5.9

The trackpad:

**To use scroll up or scroll down, you "touch" the top right or bottom right, you don't move your finger. Or you can use two fingers and move them up/down. The mouse settings has a little video there to show you. **

4 out of 5 eggsNot Bad, Not Great

Pros: Nice size, nice weight, nice price!

Cons: Useless keypad buttons, seriously useless! Performance isn't what I expected. I installed a SSD in both of these that I purchased. I expected better performance than I'm seeing. It's the CPU that's the weak link, but I know this was built for battery life and can live with it.

Other Thoughts: Overall I'm still happy I purchased two of these. Compared to other thin and lights this is a bargain. Still, how you can screw up touchpad buttons is beyond me. I'm going to have to void my warranty to get in there and make them usable!

5 out of 5 eggsPhenomenal laptop...if you know what you're doing

Pros: The laptop comes with vista installed... but runs SO MUCH BETTER with Ubuntu 11.10. I still am able to get ~7 hours of dimmed-screen battery life with wi-fi enabled. IMHO, this laptop is easily comparable to a newer power-efficient Lenovo, but RUNNING UBUNTU IS A MUST. Average power consumption with brightness set to low and wifi off is around 8-10 Watts of power consistently. That, my friends, is amazing. Most of the power goes to the monitor.
I did a glx_gears test (linux framerate test) and was able to get 375 frames per second in performance mode (pegged at 1.65ghz)...that is pretty phenomenal for a laptop that consumes as little power as this baby does.

Dual monitor configuration is also functional. I use the laptop's HDMI to output to a 1680X1050 monitor and get a
3046X1050 total desktop size (this is the largest possible with xorg-edgers at the moment unfortunately)
Webcam is functional out of the box under Ubuntu 11.10 64 bit.

Wifi also works out of the box.

Cons: Under Ubuntu 11.10 I am unable to get the bluetooth connectivity figured out. Pressing the Fn+F9 (the bluetooth toggle combination) does nothing. All other controls seem to work.

I wish the LED screen had a higher refresh rate. with VSYNC on, the monitor shows choppy graphics. I just leave it off. I seem to get way better performance and battery life without the VSYNC.

The Laptop doesn't come with a CD/DVD drive, but I've found that most USB cd drives work well under Ubuntu with Legacy drivers. I use an ASUS SDRW-08D2S-U and have had 100% functionality. The burn speed for CD/DVD is detected by the system under Ubuntu, and I haven't had any failed disc writes yet... but it still would've been nice to see this laptop have maybe a slim slot-loader combo drive to help it distinguish itself from netbooks.

There are only 2 usb ports, so purchasing at least a 4-port USB hub is a must.

Other Thoughts: The functional laptop software configuration is as follows:
Ubuntu 64 bit 11.10 (using LiveCD)
Xorg-Edgers video drivers (These are the fastest most developed open-source drivers) combined with amdcccle (ATI/AMD Catalyst Control Center).
OpenGL
OpenJDK (Java)
Compiz for desktop environment
Libreoffice for Office applications (ppt, documents, spreadsheets)

I get GREAT results with this configuration, and have saved COUNTLESS dollars with this system. I've done the math, and have spent ~$650 TOTAL on this system. With an equal Windows or Apple system I would've spent nearly $2000 for the same configuration (in adding software of course).

This is my first MSI system, but am very pleased in especially the price point. Kudos to the open-source community and xorg-edgers developers for creating a framework to make ATI's power-efficient Fusion APU function properly under Linux. It's my every-day laptop, and is, with the exception of bluetooth, totally functional.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfectly Awesome!!!

Pros: Awesome. Lighter than I expected. Faster than I expected. Much faster than my dual-core Intel Atom, almost as fast as my old Pentium dual-core desktop. And can run SC II and DAO II smoothly on low settings. Amazing bang for the buck. This is the perfect poorman's ultrabook/gaming laptop.

Cons: The only wish I would ask for is if it was a smidge lighter but for this price, I'm not complaining.

Other Thoughts: I couldn't even find anything close to this at my local Fryes after instant and MIR discounts. I love you Newegg... I love you so much...

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect notebook

Pros: Perfect size and weight. I find a 13-14 inch display size perfect for my 70 year old eyes. The 4 gig of RAM and 500 GB hard drive are more than adequate for my needs. This is my first Windows 7 computer and thus far I am thoroughly delighted. Great battery life!

Cons: Most of the heat from this very conveniently sized laptop notebook exits out at the lower left front corner which can get a little uncomfortable. Venting to the sides or rear would be a nice improvement.

Other Thoughts: Bought this to replace a six year old Compaq laptop and am really pleased. Perfect size to tote around.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat ultra-thin laptop.

Pros: Small form factor with great battery and good possessing power. windows 7 runs with no problems at all. The screen looks great. Great price for specs. 7200 RPM hard drive loads quick.

Cons: speakers have a small sound but its a small laptop.

Other Thoughts: For the price its a win-win laptop. I looked at the other higher price ultra thin laptops and for the price this one can't be beat. The texture of the laptop itself is amazing quality for this price point.
