1 out of 5 eggsGood or not, I can't say

Pros: Great looking laptop.
Seemed to have everything my son wanted.
Great price.

Cons: Got blue screen of death. This machine has an intel hd 4000 graphics card built in, along witht he added GTX 670M. I can only suppose that the graphics needed to be tweaked to not use the intel card and use the GTX 670M chip instead. Everytime we tried to play a high graphics game, we got the blue screen of death.

Other Thoughts: I can only assume that this is a great machine if it was in proper working order.
Newegg was helpful in the fact that they would give a new one, if they had it, hich now they do not, so they are giving me my $$ back. Thanks, but umm, I had gotten this for 1299 after the on sale price and rebates, but not I can't touch anything close for under 1600. All and all, this sucks!

4 out of 5 eggsSpace Bar Misses

Pros: Great Gaming, large screen, Everyone comments on light up keys.

Cons: The space bar can not be hit on the ends, it has to be struck near the middle. This makes writing terrible and the space bar gets skipped a couple times or you are constantly looking to make sure you hit the space bar in the center. Gives me a problem with downloading or installing anything. some type of error comes up. Never had this problem with my last laptop.

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Quad core with turbo boost works perfectly under Linux.
Plenty of RAM.
Backlit keyboard (only white on Linux, but still nice).
Button to turn on/off powerful extra fan when laptop gets too hot.
Number pad
Button to lock touchpad to avoid accidental clicks

Cons: SSD is a Transcend TS128GSSD25S-M. The drive performs worse than the average HDD at common tasks, and is only marginally better at small random access. It almost makes me feel like I got scammed when I saw how terrible it was. I replaced mine right away with an OCZ Vertex 4, and the improvement is dramatic. Search Google (or newegg) for more reviews on the Transcend.

Can't control keyboard lights under Linux.
No middle click button
Home and End keys are accessed by pressing Fn+PgUp and Fn+PgDn respectively... Not very convenient.

Other Thoughts: RAID is really nice to have one you replace the horrible stock SSD. Overall works well under my Gentoo Linux setup. With the Vertex 4 installed along with the quad-core i7 and 12GB RAM, this laptop is super fast and responsive with everything.

Also, /proc/cpuinfo and the /sys cpufreq files wont correctly display turbo boost frequency changes. They will just show the CPU being at it's normal speed (2.3GHz) while turbo boost is active. Install i7z to see the true cpu frequency if you want to check if turbo boost is working.

Overall, a very nice computer, but the terrible SSD seems like a bait-and-switch and negates one of the major selling points unless you want to shell out another couple hundred dollars to replace it.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

We apologize for the issues that you are having with this product.
Our products are carefully configured to offer you the best value for its price but unfortunately we cannot satisfy everyone.
The SuperRAID offers you great performance way more than average HDD RAID out there.

In regards to Linux issues you are having, since Linux isn't a mainstream OS yet therefore there's no support for it at the moment. Please kindly understand that many of component manufacturers (LED controller manufacturer in this case) do not offer Linux drivers.
Hopefully, we can provide Linux driver support in the future when the right time comes, and we thank you for your valuable comments.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding the product, please do not hesitate to contact us directly at and we will be more than happy to assist you, thank you.

5 out of 5 eggsDo you research

Pros: I dont own this model but have another msi laptop I was looking for a new one and read the reviews, and to the guy that wanted linux im not sure if he has just started using laptops but before I change anything I do my home work instead of jumping off a cliff and hoping there are no rocks below lol. Word of advise its not msi fault that you did not do your homework before destroying your product.

Cons: none

3 out of 5 eggsMSI?

Pros: Fast for general use and most gaming
Lots of features and ports
Good audio
Decent build quality mostly

Cons: GTX 670m - See other thoughts
Some keyboard keys don't register most of the time and some are incorrectly lit
Killer E2200 is trash (Bios settings don't save/program is useless)
Software CD/DVD drive button (Got to have a program installed for it to open)
Turbo mode is broken (Never worked with or without programs)
Cheapish screen (Ghosting and backlight bleed)

Other Thoughts: I bought this computer solely as a gaming machine for on the go. It's fast and plays them alright, but I feel cheated with the 670m. Partially Nvidia's fault at time of writing because driver support sucks but I am upset that MSI just decided to say Hey! Let's slap in the 675m 3 months after the product has been out for not much reason! I would have definitely waited to buy this if I knew it was going to come with the 675m at no addition cost. The 675m is a good bit faster than the 670m, more cooler and efficient too. But, it's whatever I guess. Other than that the cons I've listed aren't that big of a deal, and some might not have the same issues. All in all, the laptop is decent for the value and does well in most cases so I give it a 3.5/5.

5 out of 5 eggsMSI GT70

Pros: Product was received in a remote location in Northern Saskatchewan within 2 weeks. Although this is somewhat unflattering, that delivery time is less than what I was expecting. The computer was exactly as described and performs fantastic.

Cons: No cons

3 out of 5 eggsMSI fumbles on the 99 yard line.

Pros: Inventive RAID solution w/superlative performance. Ivy Bridge HD4k graphics are decent. CPU is ~10% improvement over sandy bridge mobile. NVIDIA 670m is slightly better than nothing.

Cons: An otherwise stellar machine inexplicably hobbled by MSI's boneheaded decision to go with the 670m instead of the 675m at the very least. The 670m is ~20% slower than the 580m in the gt783r.

Other Thoughts: The lack of a 7970m, now, is also shortsighted of MSI.

To the reviewer whining about lack of install media: Aside from Alienware (at least back in the day), Sager, Clevo, or other highend notebook manufacturers w/wares in the $5k+ range, you don't get pre-pressed recovery media. There's an app on the desktop you launch and choose to burn then or create isos. Not hard. You can't fault MSI for your ignorance. Wrt Linux, the machine works fine. In spite of the lack of nvidia drivers the HD4k works with generic drivers to the extent that everything just works. Blame NVIDIA for not releasing drivers for production hardware. Lastly, wrt the warranty sticker, various postings on forum sites claim MSI aren't too concerned about that as long as there is no evidence of overt damage. At least wrt US based warranty center.

1 out of 5 eggsLocked down proprietary piece of junk!

Pros: Comfortable keyboard, decent specs. Good that the display is anti-glare. Nice if you're looking for a windows only box and willing to shell out a few hundred every time you need your OS reloaded!

Cons: DOES NOT COME WITH A RESTORE CD - UNREASONABLE WARRANTY CONDITIONS! I purchased this thing thinking I could put in my own hard drives and install Linux. What a surprise - the bottom is sealed shut with a VOID IF TAMPERED sticker. So much for user serviceable parts! After wiping the existing drives and installing Linux, I soon discovered that the graphics card and Ethernet will only work on Windows. Which on its own is a surprise given that most Nvidia cards work on Linux - but in this case no proprietary driver exists for a 670m. While I can live with wireless only until a driver for the ethernet becomes available, I simply cannot work without a fully functional graphics card. So, I figured ok - I'll live with Windows for a bit *YUCK* until Nvidia comes out with a driver. OOPS - NO RESTORE CD! Just a Welcome to Windows booklet and a handy little button mixed in with the fn keys to do an auto restore. WHICH DOES NOT WORK if you've formatted your hard drives.
