5 out of 5 eggsMSI did good!

This review is from: MSI GT Series GT70 Dominator-895 Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4800MQ (2.70GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 870M 3GB 17.3" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: great laptop for the price, it looks sharp and plays all my games I throw at it with ease

Cons: It was a pain to register to get the MSI shirt and what not. On top of that windows 8 kind of sucks balls.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat bang for your money.

This review is from: MSI GT Series GT70 Dominator-895 Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4800MQ (2.70GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 870M 3GB 17.3" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Biggest bang for the buck out of most gaming laptops out there.

Comes with an I7 4810MQ not the 4800 which is a nice suprise.

RAM/secondary hard drive easily upgraded (to a point.)

Very slick looking, pictures don't do the brushed aluminium look justice (however it is very finger-printy).

With my SSD installed, it will boot windows in about 10 seconds and i can get to the desktop(with having to enter my password) in about 15 seconds.

I also love the expand-ability of this laptop, almost every component is upgrade-able.

Speakers sound great thanks to the small woofer in the bottom (they don't get super loud but loud enough).

Cons: The laptop comes with two hard drive bays, bay A comes with a drive already installed (this is the stock 1TB drive), this drive is fine for storage but I feel like it is a serious speed limiter. It is a 7200RPM drive but if you are concerned about things like boot time and time required to launch applications I would highly recommend doing what I did and buy a Samsung 840 EVO and re-install windows onto that.

Also if you plan on installing more than a total of 3 extra ram cards, be prepared to disassemble pretty much the whole laptop because the other two ram slots are on the other side of the main-board along with access to the pre-installed hard-drive.

If you want to use MSI's hard core RAID 0 with three mSATA drives you will have to shell out another 100 dollars on top of the cost of the extra drives to MSI because the proprietary board that is used for this, is not included on this model.

Other Thoughts: Benchmarked Tomb Raider with maxed out settings and it came out with an average FPS of 35, while not incredible it is very good considering it is a laptop and you wont really notice the difference.

The fan can be loud but mainly only if you turn on the Turbo fan switch (I mainly only use this to show off or to cool it down faster after a gaming session before I pack it up.

3 out of 5 eggsGood Value Gaming Laptop

This review is from: MSI GT Series GT70 Dominator-895 Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4800MQ (2.70GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 870M 3GB 17.3" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: - Great performance at a very reasonable price point.
- Handles most games fine at max/high settings.
- Solid construction (read: heavy, but reassuringly so)

Cons: - Inordinate amount of bloatware.
- No SSD
- Heat higher than expected.

Other Thoughts: My order came with a 4810MQ, unexpected but appreciated. The price is outstanding, but it takes a lot of work to get it cleaned up. Two reasons why I took away eggs:

1. Not only was the bloatware very pronounced, but something seemed off in the configuration of the laptop. It took almost a day to fix settings, kill the the unnecessary bloat, and reconfigure the laptop to work efficiently. It would have been easier if I'd just been able to wipe it and start from scratch, but the recovery materials provided were lacking.

2. I added a 256 GB SSD, transferred the "cleaned up" OS image over, and it hums along very nicely now. But this really should have come standard, even for a few extra bucks. The CPU is good, the GPU is good, the rest of the device feels well-constructed and robust - why devalue that by putting only a single, mechanical HDD in there?

All in all, I have no regrets about my purchase and would recommend it to others. But it will need some TLC before it's really ready for use.

3 out of 5 eggsExcellent desktop replacement

This review is from: MSI GT Series GT70 Dominator-895 Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4800MQ (2.70GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 870M 3GB 17.3" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Powerful machine right out of the box coupled with an excellent high range GPU. This machine takes pretty much anything I throw at it at max settings.

The CPU: included in mine was a 4810MQ which was a pleasant surprise.

The Keyboard: is fantastic, it really feels like night and day between this machine and my work Dell machine.

Coupled with an SSD: this machine feels like a tank (More below on that...)

Cons: Mechanical hard drive: I almost thought the machine was broken (using 99% of disk resources) until I remembered I opted to get the machine without SSD. I installed an SSD in mine and now the machine works beautifully.

Upgrading basic components: For some reason, the default configuration for these machines tucks the RAM away under the keyboard. In order to upgrade the stock ram you have to...

- Unscrew the back panel
- Unscrew the tension screws on the GPU/CPU
- Pop the heatsinks (void warranty)
- Remove the cards (GPU, CPU, WIFI...)
- Unplug the keyboard ribbon
- Shim the keyboard on top
- Remove the speakers
- Remove the keyboard
- Unscrew the LCD panel
- Separate the clam shell

That's a bunch of work to replace stock ram.. and it's a pretty bad design. I realize space is at a premium in a laptop but seriously?

In order to upgrade the hard drive:

Do almost the same as above, minus the LCD and Keyboard as the stock hard drive is in a rubber stopper. You have to unblock the drive to remove it.

it's pretty bad in this day and age to have this type of design, period. These are, imo, user replaceable parts that should be supported and embraced.

Other Thoughts: Make no mistake that this item completely trounces the competition on price point. It's a fantastic value, just please understand that they took measures to enforce the fact that other models exist. Don't like the upgrade/repair procedure? order a bigger machine for $$$ more... I would love to start recommending this to others, but RAM and Hard Drive have to be user replaceable without voiding a warranty.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat semi-mobile gaming option.

This review is from: MSI GT Series GT70 Dominator-895 Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4800MQ (2.70GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 870M 3GB 17.3" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Capable of handling anything I've thrown at it thus far. Perhaps not 60fps @ max settings, but smooth and good looking.

Impressed with the sound. Often sounds better than the TV I hook it up to in whatever random hotel I happen to be staying at in a given week.

Significantly less heat buildup than my last gaming laptop.

Little wasted space in the design. I was able to fit it into my old rolling bag, which was not designed to accommodate such a large laptop. Handles conveniently enough when passing through airport security.

Boots impressively fast, even without an SSD.

Cons: Windows 8. Tried to approach it with an open mind, but I've ended up spending hours trying to make 8 be less like 8, and more like 7. I've strongly considered wiping the system and "downgrading" to 7.

Lots of bloatware and trial software. Once again, I would have greatly preferred to start with a clean OS.

1TB drive isn't exactly small, but it does keep me from keeping my entire steam library on the local machine.

Other Thoughts: I travel most weeks, and wanted a large screen, 1080p option for entertainment. This machine has not disappointed. No real issues, aside from the windows 8 hassle.

4 out of 5 eggsMSI GT Series GT70 Dominator

This review is from: MSI GT Series GT70 Dominator-895 Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4800MQ (2.70GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 870M 3GB 17.3" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Offers pretty good hardware specs for a decent price.

upgrading to a larger screen was the same price which gives me an over all bigger work space with a full 10 key.

The audio is good for being built in.

Quite unless your fan kicks on, which is a good thing.
also have a quick key to turn it on automatically that I like.

Cons: I don't like windows 8.1 (or 8) and really don't like the software bundles when purchasing any pre build computer.

Other Thoughts: I have not owned a laptop for some number of years but this guy gets the job done. I am overall well pleased with it other than windows 8. I do find that it take FOREVER to boot up. (at least 30 seconds) not sure if its a windows 8 thing or the laptop it self. To get a 5th egg I would have liked to have control over the features that take over your computer initially.

I also have not tried any games on this either. so I cant say if its good for gaming just yet. Right now its for solid modeling and it works great.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Gaming Laptop

This review is from: MSI GT Series GT70 Dominator-895 Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4800MQ (2.70GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 870M 3GB 17.3" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: If you are looking for a gaming laptop search no more. I have to say that i am pretty impressed with both build quality and performance of this laptop. I upgraded from a Lenovo y500 and i haven't looked back. The laptop is highly customizable offering you enough slots to add in a second hard drive and two sticks of ram. the day i received the laptop i installed a 240 gigabyte Kingston Hyper X SSD and 8 gigs of Kingston Hyper X Ram. I have to say it is an amazing laptop for gaming. so far I've installed about 20 games and it plays through them without breaking a sweat. The computer boots to OS rather quick and battery life has been stellar giving me 5 hours when surfing the web and about ~2 hours when gaming. I have yet to see a problem with the cooling like other people state on other reviews, so far the laptop has ran cool without having the need to manually put the computers fan in turbo mode.

Cons: None

3 out of 5 eggsMSI GT Series GT70 Dominator-895 Gaming Notebook

This review is from: MSI GT Series GT70 Dominator-895 Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4800MQ (2.70GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 870M 3GB 17.3" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Price the best price per power components hands down

Great Speed out of a laptop very fast boot times and processing

Graphics are crisp and clean produding good framerates on the highest settings GTX 870 who needs to day more awsome

Keyboard is very nice and the backlit keys are the best i have ever seen on a laptop (my favorite feature is the button to change profiles instantly)

Layout on this is very straight forward and easy to use, very well build and sturdy, yet BIG so naturally easy to work on or upgrade

Despite of the Flaws this is still such a great laptop that if given the choice again I would confidently get this one again

Cons: UPGRADES- BEWARE if you want to have the SUPER RAID 2 as advertised you will have to buy this MS-16F42 daughter board ($100) as it is not included!!!!!!!! This was not pleasent to order 3 - 240 GB ssd open up the back and now have to wait again for the board, Also do not expect it easy to find a retailer as MSI site is horrible and does not list this and the CUSTOMER SERVICE has yet to respond.

Monitor is nice and clear but is lacking in the red saturation and when comparing side by side movies (catching fire red dress) to an old mac book it is very dull and is lacking in the color.

Warrenty sticker is in the way of the screw, so by adding an additioal HD bay for SSD OR standard 2.5 HD or system MEMORY UPGRADING of any kind voids FACTORY warrenty

It is NOT A CON for me but to others when gaming this thing gets HOT and the fan is awsome throwing out heat like a jet engine taking off and sounds like one too (but not noticable with good headphones) Must have laptop cooler pad do not game with this directly on your lap!

Other Thoughts: 8.1 windows yes it is the standard for all new PCs to ship with but it is still buggy and 7 is best for work / gaming computers
YES I bought 7 to install and replace 8.1

5 out of 5 eggsThe best purchase I have made in my life, seriously!

This review is from: MSI GT Series GT70 Dominator-895 Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4800MQ (2.70GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 870M 3GB 17.3" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Really Fast laptop

Graphics card performance is excellent

Higher Connection speed over long range w/ the Killer Network Adapter

Gaming is excellent! (GW2 on max :D)

Does as advertised

Keyboard is the best I have ever used in a laptop

Audio is superb (don't blast it, no need) It has a lot of power through it's speakers

Build quality is very nice

Wrist Rest is comfortable

Cons: Heat may be an issue, but so far, I have not experienced any crashes in this laptop.

I would recommend getting an external cooler if you want to play it safely, but so far, I do not see any dire issues about the heat

Arrow keys are a little hard to get used to, but that's not an issue for me.

Other Thoughts: I have the Dominator w/ a SSD and 12GB

I would purchase this laptop w/ a SSD inside.
It really makes a difference in speed

People have been saying this is "too big." I honestly love the size of the laptop. It is just beautiful, the way it's made. I have been getting compliments how how great it looks from my girlfriend's family.

If you can afford the extra SSD in this laptop, I would seriously consider it.

I am in love with this computer. I was considering the Alienware 18/17, but after some serious thought, the MSI Dominator is just made better.

You will know what I mean after using it. They've partnered up with other companies, for that, you get the best of ALL worlds.

Killer network adapter
Dynaudio speaker setup
Steelseries Keyboard

4 out of 5 eggsWhat can be said that hasnt already?

This review is from: MSI GT Series GT70 Dominator-895 Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4800MQ (2.70GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 870M 3GB 17.3" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Solidly built, there isn't anything on this computer that is/feels flimsy or that corners were cut during manufacturing. The action of the lid provides enough resistance so that it doesn't feel like you might break it, and the weight of the computer itself allows one to open the lid with just one hand.

As one of the other commenters posted-- the keyboard is fantastic. One of the best I've ever used. I've yet to have a mistype using this keyboard. The keys move just the perfect amount for me (no need to hammer them as hard as possible), the texture is perfect, they're not slippery or anything.

After some tweaks, you'll be able to run most current gen games on their highest settings. More on this in Other Thoughts.

The majority of the plugs (power, display, ethernet, etc.) are located on the back of the computer. This was one of the main reasons why I bought this computer as opposed to some others.

The cooling vents intake from the back and exhaust on the LEFT side of the computer, so if you're right-handed, your mouse hand isn't going to get warm.

This model comes with a spare HDD bay that has room for 3 SSDs.

Cons: The "Turbo" setting has to be manually initiated using the appropriate button. The computer will not step up the fan speed to max on its own. This might be an annoyance to some.

The HD is only 5400 rpm. I knew this going into the purchase, but at this price point, and with these specs this really becomes a bottleneck and MSI could have gone with at least a 7200 rpm drive.

Another note about the HDD. This is a 1TB hard drive, but the partition decisions by the company were a bit perplexing. The boot partition was greater than half the size of the drive. Not really sure why they wanted OS to be over 500gb and the "data" partition to be the remainder, but a simple resizing fixed that.

Does not come with a blu-ray player. Again, while I knew this going into the purchase, at this price point we could have gotten a blu-ray player/burner instead of a standard dvd-burner.

Due to all the bells and whistles that this computer has, the 8gb of ram is nearly at 50% capacity before you even run any games. You'll want to consider upgrading your RAM as well as the drive if you want to use this as a serious gaming rig. That being said, however, this still performs very well with games in it's stock configuration.

Other Thoughts: Here's where the obligatory Windows 8 comments go... Not sure why there's so much hate towards the operating system. The metro page is fully customizable and is extremely useful once you take the 10 seconds to erase what's there by default and set it up the way you want it. I suppose the windows 7 / start menu fan-boys are too stuck on their desktop shortcuts or something. While this is not a touch screen laptop, Windows 8 still allows faster navigation of your resources and a more responsive system experience than any other version of windows. Hands down.

I mentioned above in the Pros section about having to make a few "tweaks" to the system. There is a bit of bloat that comes pre-installed on the computer, but it will only take you a few minutes to uninstall. If you're looking for performance, I would consider turning off the suite of software that controls the stuff like the back-lit keyboard and the various custom macros you can set up. This accounts for ~30% of your memory usage while the system is idle and could affect your gaming experience if you haven't upgraded the RAM.

A note to those that report heat issues with their laptop. I purchased this laptop along with the Cooler Master NotePal x3. The computer sits perfectly with this laptop cooler and heat has never been an issue. The cooling pad also has some cable management built into it so it helps keep the desk even more organized. This added peripheral only added $30 to the overall order and was, in my opinion, definitely worth it.
