1 out of 5 eggsVery disappointed

This review is from: MSI GT Series GT70 Dominator-895 Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4800MQ (2.70GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 870M 3GB 17.3" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Everything it says on the sticker is true (lots of RAM, nice CPU, improved cooling, etc.)

Cons: Same problem as its predecessors: high-performance NVidia GPU wants to commit suicide and must be talked off the ledge constantly until the inevitable happens. I regret giving this 1 star but it is factually accurate from my own experiences.

Other Thoughts: As my record on this site would show, I've been a customer of MSI hardware for a long time. I've only had nice things to say though I usually don't write reviews - but I do answer questions if I get them. Normally, I build desktops.

I purchased this unit as a replacement for my MSI gx740. I am completely disappointed and, while I still hold MSI as a good manufacturer, this may be my last MSI purchase because, in my opinion, the drop in hardware quality is starting to show and the marriage with NVidia cards is not working, at least for me.

In a nutshell - my GX740's NVidia card overheated constantly and within weeks of having purchased that computer, it burned itself. Since I do a lot of programming work on these computers and gaming is secondary, I carried on with a crippled card until I decided to purchase this Dominator about six months ago. Despite my dislike for very large laptops, I went with this huge unit because I understood the "desktop-class" NVidia GPU needed the room for cooling. Within a week I could tell something was not right - fans on all the time and I could not put the computer on my lap - it would burn my legs.

I discovered the new GeForce drivers are difficult. At first, all was well - hot, but well. Then slowly, the same symptoms as my older unit - driver crashes. Eventually, it's constantly crashing the driver(s) – it crashes even while just opening the NVidia tools. I can’t really play anything. I can work with the built-in Intel graphics but that's about it. I am pretty sure at this point that the NVidia card is damaged. I’ve tried every driver, every utility, every setting – clearly, the hardware is pretty much busted at this point.

For a starters, it insists on overclocking itself to the absolute boost limits despite my telling it not to: the card cannot handle that default boost speed, not on this unit anyway. I found out that, if I under-clocked it (using for instance, NVidiaInspector) by as much as 100 Mhz, it would actually behave - but after a while, it insisted on overclocking itself back. Now, if I under-clock it, it immediately resets itself to its maximum boost value which fries it.

About 5 months since my purchase, I've just about had it. As I said, I am pretty sure the hardware has damaged itself. I must have put 100 hours into research on this. I've posted to NVidia forums - I have no official response. But I can tell this is the same problem I had with the previous unit. The card is running way too hot until some circuit burns or something. Very disappointed; I understand things happen but, with these MSI units, for me this is more like a pattern. Maybe it is bad luck but, I build my own rigs and, outside this product line, I’ve never seen anything like this. I am going to get this unit to my daughter for school work and switch manufacturers for my next desktop. I don’t think this unit can handle the pressure.

5 out of 5 eggsLOVE IT

This review is from: MSI GT Series GT70 Dominator-895 Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4800MQ (2.70GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 870M 3GB 17.3" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Best barging cpu with graphics card you can get in laptop!

Cons: For the price none.

Other Thoughts: I installed windows 7 on this machine. I have it duel boot with windows 8. I just went into bios and enabled UEFI with CSM. Downloaded all the drivers from MSI and placed them on the hard drive that came with this and did a fresh install of windows 7 on separate SSD with no problem. transferred drivers over and runs great. Literally boots in less than 5 seconds with SSD. Use the hard drive with windows 8 as back up.

5 out of 5 eggsRuns Great

This review is from: MSI GT Series GT70 Dominator-895 Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4800MQ (2.70GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 870M 3GB 17.3" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Great performance
Speakers are top notch
Cooling system is adequate
Price
Design

Cons: A bit of a hassle to take through my school's metal detectors every day, as it is cumbersome and somewhat heavy, but it's still worth it. The only other thing I can think of is that I found a bit of bloatware upon first starting up the laptop, but I uninstalled it all quickly without a problem.

Other Thoughts: Excellent performance for a laptop, as a first time owner of a laptop I must say I had my doubts, but this beast just blows my gaming desktop completely out of the water. MSI has outdone itself with this monster of a machine.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat machine

This review is from: MSI GT Series GT70 Dominator-895 Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4800MQ (2.70GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 870M 3GB 17.3" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: -This machine has phenomonal performance
-4810MQ Nice surprise
-Nvidia 870m is great
-Seperare left and right trackpad buttons, I hate it when they are one with the trackpad

Cons: The only con for me is a software issue, this beast won't sleep. I'll close the lid and a little bit later (2 to 15 minutes) it'll surge back to life. The screen and keyboard will stay off but it obviously is awake. And no it isn't a mouse or anything.

4 out of 5 eggsGood computer but LARGE

This review is from: MSI GT Series GT70 Dominator-895 Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4800MQ (2.70GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 870M 3GB 17.3" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: The computer has good specs for the price
The graphics are decent 1920X1080
the processor is good
the ram is alright
all out of the box
the screen is 17"

Cons: This thing is a tank
the battery is a huge brick (annoying)
the computer is massive. you can always use it as a weapon if your being attacked!

This might scare you
First thing I did after setting it up was uninstall the pre-installed norton. and the OS wouldn't boot, It instantly jumped me into recovery mode (pretty scary on the first day of owning this tank of a machine.)
Recovery mode worked and got me back into the machine. No problems yet. But man I didn't realize this machine was going to be so heavy. ...
Also windows 8.1 is c r a p t a s t i c!
going to put windows 7 pro on it.

I wish it had a back lit keyboard.

Other Thoughts: if you dont mind getting a workout while your carrying this thing around it will do most anything for you. Even play some games. I bought it for work though...

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Laptop

This review is from: MSI GT Series GT70 Dominator-895 Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4800MQ (2.70GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 870M 3GB 17.3" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: The Screen has great viewing angles and color for it being a TN screen, Fast and the price of it.

Cons: Battery life is pretty poor but who cares since it is a gaming laptop and meant to be plugged in most of the time.

Other Thoughts: I think it is fantastic they added the Intel i7 4810MQ over the 4800 and find for the price I paid for this laptop $1,199.99 this is a great laptop with the Nividia GTX 870m and I actually figured a 17 inch with these specs would be out of my price range.

4 out of 5 eggsGood enough for gaming

This review is from: MSI GT Series GT70 Dominator-895 Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4800MQ (2.70GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 870M 3GB 17.3" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Came double boxed. The retail box was inside a perfectly sized outer box along with a newegg box covering that.
Good for mobile gaming. Plays most of today's games at fairly high settings.
Display looks amazing.
802.11ac Wi-fi
Nice backlit keyboard with multiple colors and transition effects.
Nice speakers with subwoofer. Has Sound Blaster Cinema software to enhance the Realtek audio it comes with.

Cons: Not even as fast as my GTX670 in my desktop.
No SSD, but transferring all of the partitions over to a SSD I bought with a 3rd party program wasn't too much of a hassle.
Opening the back to install a SSD results in a voided warranty since you have to break a sticker for one of the screws.

Other Thoughts: For the cost, it's a good mid range gaming laptop that will last for a few years to come.

Pros: great laptop for the price, it looks sharp and plays all my games I throw at it with ease

Cons: It was a pain to register to get the MSI shirt and what not. On top of that windows 8 kind of sucks balls.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat bang for your money.

This review is from: MSI GT Series GT70 Dominator-895 Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4800MQ (2.70GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 870M 3GB 17.3" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Biggest bang for the buck out of most gaming laptops out there.

Comes with an I7 4810MQ not the 4800 which is a nice suprise.

RAM/secondary hard drive easily upgraded (to a point.)

Very slick looking, pictures don't do the brushed aluminium look justice (however it is very finger-printy).

With my SSD installed, it will boot windows in about 10 seconds and i can get to the desktop(with having to enter my password) in about 15 seconds.

I also love the expand-ability of this laptop, almost every component is upgrade-able.

Speakers sound great thanks to the small woofer in the bottom (they don't get super loud but loud enough).

Cons: The laptop comes with two hard drive bays, bay A comes with a drive already installed (this is the stock 1TB drive), this drive is fine for storage but I feel like it is a serious speed limiter. It is a 7200RPM drive but if you are concerned about things like boot time and time required to launch applications I would highly recommend doing what I did and buy a Samsung 840 EVO and re-install windows onto that.

Also if you plan on installing more than a total of 3 extra ram cards, be prepared to disassemble pretty much the whole laptop because the other two ram slots are on the other side of the main-board along with access to the pre-installed hard-drive.

If you want to use MSI's hard core RAID 0 with three mSATA drives you will have to shell out another 100 dollars on top of the cost of the extra drives to MSI because the proprietary board that is used for this, is not included on this model.

Other Thoughts: Benchmarked Tomb Raider with maxed out settings and it came out with an average FPS of 35, while not incredible it is very good considering it is a laptop and you wont really notice the difference.

The fan can be loud but mainly only if you turn on the Turbo fan switch (I mainly only use this to show off or to cool it down faster after a gaming session before I pack it up.

3 out of 5 eggsGood Value Gaming Laptop

This review is from: MSI GT Series GT70 Dominator-895 Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4800MQ (2.70GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 870M 3GB 17.3" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: - Great performance at a very reasonable price point.
- Handles most games fine at max/high settings.
- Solid construction (read: heavy, but reassuringly so)

Cons: - Inordinate amount of bloatware.
- No SSD
- Heat higher than expected.

Other Thoughts: My order came with a 4810MQ, unexpected but appreciated. The price is outstanding, but it takes a lot of work to get it cleaned up. Two reasons why I took away eggs:

1. Not only was the bloatware very pronounced, but something seemed off in the configuration of the laptop. It took almost a day to fix settings, kill the the unnecessary bloat, and reconfigure the laptop to work efficiently. It would have been easier if I'd just been able to wipe it and start from scratch, but the recovery materials provided were lacking.

2. I added a 256 GB SSD, transferred the "cleaned up" OS image over, and it hums along very nicely now. But this really should have come standard, even for a few extra bucks. The CPU is good, the GPU is good, the rest of the device feels well-constructed and robust - why devalue that by putting only a single, mechanical HDD in there?

All in all, I have no regrets about my purchase and would recommend it to others. But it will need some TLC before it's really ready for use.
