2 out of 5 eggsNot Pleased!!

Pros: Nice Keyboard
Nice screen
R290x mobile

Cons: Way underpowered CPU for gaming
My 2 year old I7 asus lappy destroys this thing
AMD dropped the ball on CPU

Other Thoughts: I mainly play WOW and it is a CPU intesive game. I figured no way this brand new laptop with a 290x and 3.5 ghz quad core would have trouble with it. It plays fine in some areas at 100 FPS, as soon as u get into a city or raid it drops to 20 to 40. My 3 year old I7 desktop with amd 8670 literally trumps this thing about 4x's over. The a10 cpu is just week. I know its and apu and all but its weak. Why MSI would even put this with a r290x and sell it is beyond me. This is the first MSI product I have bought and it may be the last. The decision by them to even make something like this and call it a gaming laptop is just absurd. Very disappointed. Very disappointed that newegg even sells this.

1 out of 5 eggsI mourn the day I decided to buy this laptop.

Pros: The pretty keyboard.
Strong Lan.

Cons: Cannot run even simple games at 60 fps.
Freezes 50% of the time I try to alt-tab.
Runs extremely hot when playing games, if you aren't using a cooling pad.
Sounds like a hurricane when you turn it on, the fans just go berserk
Windows 8.

Other Thoughts: When I was shopping for a computer about 4 months ago, I was looking for a midrange laptop that would be able to handle the games I wanted to play smoothly. Now I don't play games that take much of anything to run, league of legends, hearthstone, some steam games but usually only on medium quality. Now when I try to play these games on my newly purchased MSI Destroyer, everything craps out. I have never played on a gaming laptop that could not play league of legends at 60 frames, especially not a laptop that should be able to handle most games smoothly at ultra quality. Don't expect that from this laptop. This is quite frustrating, but even worse is when the computer freezes almost every time I alt-tab from any game. Now I thought to myself, "maybe it's my fault, maybe somehow something I downloaded on my computer is causing this". So I did a system restore and just downloaded and internet browser and league of legends. And when I played, I got 40-45 frames consistently.
Aside from the bottleneck, this laptop runs quite hot. A cooling pad is definitely an item someone with this laptop will need.
And lastly, when you turn on this laptop, the fans go absolutely nuts. It sounds like a plane taking off.
I did not want much from this laptop and it failed to fulfill my needs.

1 out of 5 eggsVery Poor for Build selection

Pros: Got here in 1 day
Pretty keyboard lights
Fast Wireless and LAN
Good GPU

Cons: Severe Bottleneck.
Terrible CPU
Expensive brick.

Other Thoughts: Bottle-necking was a huge issue at first glance. It ran slower than specs should allow. The A10 5750 has no overclocking without messing with heavy settings( not recommended). I didn't try overclocking but it was apparent that the r9 290x was actually just an 8970m by most system detection software. the APU series is awful for any sort of gaming/heavy use.

I had it a total of 2 days I used it one day before windows just gave up. It would constantly get BSOD ( which is less ominous looking in Win has a sad face ) and or freeze, before finally just not booting up windows at all. I had to recover windows with a restore. Literally all i did was defrag it and install bit defender, steam, smart defragger, cclceaner, u torrent for Gimp, and origin. There was nothing I did that could have possibly cause it to fail so bad during that time frame.
Just get any gtx 850m laptop with an i5 or something if you want performance this slow

AMD Seriously dropped the ball on the Mobile CPU series
Guess i'll just go back to intel. Their expensive but they perform well.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat laptop with some customization needed.

Pros: I bought this as a companion to my desktop since I'm spending more time away from home.

-Excellent screen
-Steel Series keyboard has made a huge difference typing (full NumPad too!)
-discrete sound card is rare in laptops at my price range and an extra treat
-Pleasant case/easy to clean

So far I haven't been able to push this laptop to its maximum potential yet, mostly because I haven't had the opportunity. However, it has amazing viewing angles on the screen, and it is made SOLID.

Cons: -Windows 8
-VariBright (Out of the box customization issue)
-No SSD :(
-Fuzzy Apps (Out of the box customization issue)

Windows 8 is annoying but not nearly as bad as it used to be, this build is updated to Win 8.1 and has a Win7/XP configuration.

VariBright was a weird problem that I had to do some snooping to solve. It caused some screen flickering issues while on battery power, but in the AMD control panel I was able to turn it off which ended that mess.

Solid build, but this is a heavy laptop. I'm glad I have a backpack to carry it around.

Considering the price of the laptop you think there would at least be an SSD, but they wanted to maximize space so they went with a 1tb drive. There are 2 expansion bays and restore media is provided from the looks of it, so its not TOO bad. The 1TB is a 7200RPM, which isn't the slowest but it does lag a bit with Win8 load-times- don't expect to pull up that quick reminder or email in a hurry.

-For non Win8 only apps you have to enable non-scaling DPI mode under compatibility settings. A lot of things, like Chrome and Steam, were appearing fuzzy because of this. The screen is TOO good.

Other Thoughts: Overall the Pros are too good hardware wise and the cons are really just minor software inconveniences. aside from not having an SSD, that with some patience and slight tweaking make this a really well put together and affordable high end gaming laptop.

I also purchased a wireless gaming mouse (Logitech G602) to take advantage of the BluTooth compatibility and it works like a charm.

4 out of 5 eggsWhat I expected

Pros: Steel Series does make this laptop feel so comfortable in your hand. It can run pretty much every current game on ultra except for battlefield4 , well it can but if only mantle is being used, which this r9 has no support for bf4 mantle just yet. The CPU got a lot of heat for it's speed, but where intel throws everything at a cpu with raw power. this A10 takes shortcuts to get the job done as an i7 would be just being crazy powerful. Think of it as a Warrior (i7) Vs Rogue (amd A10). A warrior is brute force and rogue is agile but will lose head on to a warrior. The rogue has a secret weapon called mantle! enough to take on that i7 warrior in sneaky combat. Other neat thing I like is the cooling button. if you are pushing that GPU to the limit the cooling button is a great feature. other then that the rest is just bells and whistles that any company or similar price range laptop will offer. 4.5 hours on battery if balanced. 5 hours if all power saver options turned on.

Cons: Air plane mode is a useless feature for this type of laptop.
Fn+ audio buttons are not the best idea IMO. I rather have a mute button independent of the arrow keys. Spacing of the power adapter with the Ethernet port is uncomfortable
no downgrade options for windows 7. If you are looking for a product key to windows 8, you will not find it. it is embedded in the bios.

Other Thoughts: if you plan on downgrading please don't, unless you wanna just swap out drives or do a full backup of the original OEM drive. you will not be able to install your old version windows 8 again if you change your mind. it is a 35 dollar charge to get a windows 8 recovery disk, which I think is total guano to pay money for a backup product you should have had in the first place. All in all for a true novice to gaming where they don't see a laptop in the same light as a techie it is a decent machine that will bring joy. For a techie this machine will have some frustrations but you can live with. This is still a great gaming machine and a steal for the amount you are paying for.
