4 out of 5 eggsQuite pleased

This review is from: MSI GS Series GS60 Ghost-007 Gaming Notebook Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 12GB Memory 750GB HDD 128GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" Windows 8.1

Pros: Thin
Light
Powerful
Beautiful

This laptop has handled everything I have thrown at it and I am quite happy with it.

Cons: The lid is feels flimsy when you open and close it. I have had to change my habit of opening it from the corner to opening it from the middle.

Bloatware. I believe there were only 3 or 4 things that I uninstalled right off the bat with this computer which is by no means horrible, just something to keep in mind. The uninstalls were straight forward and nothing tried to hang on.

Other Thoughts: My first shipment was essentially DOA either the AC adapter or something along the powerline was bad as it wasn't charging. Newegg was great with getting me a replacement right away,

I ran 8.1 for awhile just to test the waters before I switched it over to arch linux. In linux everything works out of the box other than the Optimus graphics which require bumblebee, and the webcam which I still haven't gotten working.

Awaiting full refund.

3 out of 5 eggsGreat gaming notebook but..

This review is from: MSI GS Series GS60 Ghost-007 Gaming Notebook Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 12GB Memory 750GB HDD 128GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" Windows 8.1

Pros: Quiet, ultra thin, very lightweight, good GPU.

Cons: Trackpad is pretty slow for its use, you'll have to use a mouse the majority of the time.

My biggest concern is the wireless... I'm not sure if I received a defective model or what not, but apparently my model cannot hold a steady signal. It WILL keep dropping from 0 KBytes to regular speed internet(1.2MBytes). This gets really annoying when you're doing online stuff such as browsing the internet and gaming multiplayer. I've registered and spoke with a tech at MSI but all the help they're giving me is basically software solutions. I believe that my wifi module inside the notebook is what is causing the problem. I will be doing a RMA if I can't get it fixed.

4 out of 5 eggsMemory Leaks

This review is from: MSI GS Series GS60 Ghost-007 Gaming Notebook Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 12GB Memory 750GB HDD 128GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" Windows 8.1

Pros: The laptop runs everything smoothly; all the games run amazing.

The keyboard is nice and the resolution is great.

Cons: Man this laptop just loves losing 90% of its RAM to nothing.

You sit on the desktop and it loses 90% with no background programs running at all. How is that even possible?

5 out of 5 eggsTiny pantheon of zues this machine is incredible.

This review is from: MSI GS Series GS60 Ghost-007 Gaming Notebook Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 12GB Memory 750GB HDD 128GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" Windows 8.1

Pros: Lighting fast, incredible versatile, amazingly cool, quiet, and LIGHT. Near perfection.

Cons: No Cons, I wish it had the same build as the Razer Blade or Mac Pro /w aluminum. IT WOULD NOT CHANGE MY PURCHASE DECISION I WOULD STILL BUY OVER THE 2013 RAZER BLADE MODEL.

Other Thoughts: I bought this go use in law school. It is uber light and will fit my needs PERFECTLY.

4 out of 5 eggsMSI GS Series GS60 Ghost-007

This review is from: MSI GS Series GS60 Ghost-007 Gaming Notebook Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 12GB Memory 750GB HDD 128GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" Windows 8.1

Pros: The keyboard is one of the best I have used. I have a wired full keyboard connect when at my desk but I find myself using the laptop keyboard anyway.
Powerful and fast. The SSD drive for the OS speeds up boot time. I have all my programs installed on the physical 7200 RPM D drive but I can still notice a faster, more consistent load time for games and other programs.
The option to autocratically turn off the track pad when a USB mouse is connected is a nice add. I am still learn to use this track pad.
I have a mid level gaming ( i7 CPU, Nivida GeForce GTX 560, Window 7) tower that is about 3 years old and this laptop defiantly out preforms it. I play Guild Wars II and I no longer see lag in the game when there are large number of players in an inclosed space.
The laptop is lite and seems very well built except for the plastic around the front of the display.
The display is very bright, and crisp. I have a 25 inch monitor connected and I still use the laptop display for some things because it looks so good. The font is small because of the high resolution and 15 inch display size but with Windows 8 you can adjust the font size to adapt if needed. I wear glasses and the native font size is fine when setting close to the laptop for me.
Camera imaged is good.
I like that the power light is blue for the Intel HD graphics and amber when using the Nvidia GeForce.
Sound system works great for gaming with a good head set. Built in speakers do provide some directional affect. The sound quality is average for a high end laptop. There is only so much you can do with such small space.
Lighted MSI gaming icon on the back of the display is a nice add.

Cons: This are all small issues and have little affect on my overall satisfaction.
Run your finger from the back edge of the display to the front and you can feel the sharp edge of the flimsy plastic around the front of the display. It seem so out of place considering the sold high quality of everything else on the laptop. If your going to have a week area this is the place to do it so its not that big a deal to me.
LED lights under the keys look impressive. I did not think I would care much about the lighting but I enjoy the look. That said, not all the keys on my keybaord have lighted LEDs all the way around the keys. Most keys have lighted LEDs under each corner of the key. The front LEDs do not light on F7, F8, F9, F11 and over half the keys on the numeric pad. I did call technical support about this and they said not all key have the same level a active LEDs. It is not noticeable until you set directly in from of the keys for a while.
The laptop is wider than most 15 inch laptops. I suspect this is related to the good cooling solution this laptop has. This will decrease the options for laptop bags. It does comes with it's own laptop sleeve. The fact that is weighs less than my 14 inch work laptop and is a half inch thinner makes up for it!

Other Thoughts: I work in IT so I am around laptops all the time. I am very pleased with this laptop and the ones at work seem cheap compared to this one now. I am satisfied with the laptop and I fully expect it will meet my gaming, and work from home needs for several years.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Laptop

This review is from: MSI GS Series GS60 Ghost-007 Gaming Notebook Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 12GB Memory 750GB HDD 128GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" Windows 8.1

Pros: Decent battery life, thin, lightweight, nice keyboard, nice screen. Performance has been great. I'm a Software Engineer and I use this laptop as my personal home computer for gaming and personal projects. I've used it for the last 2 months and it has been great. I love the portability, the look, and the fact that I didn't have to sacrifice much in terms of performance when I switched to this laptop from a nice desktop.

Cons: It would be nice if the battery life was better while gaming, but out of an ultra thin laptop/desktop replacement you can only ask for so much. For the tasks I usually need to accomplish while away from home (non-gaming related tasks) it works perfectly fine.

Other Thoughts: One thing I have noticed, for anyone who plays video games, sometimes the Nvidia optimus doesn't work properly. I think it is a problem with optimus or certain games, not the laptop. With battlefield 4 for example, it would often crash shortly after entering a game, because as the game launched it wasn't detecting and switching to the discrete graphics like it's supposed to. I was able to solve this problem completely by going to Nvidia Control Panel > Manage 3D Settings > Glabal Settings (tab) and set the preferred graphics processor to High-performance Nvidia processor.

5 out of 5 eggsNice but Sad

This review is from: MSI GS Series GS60 Ghost-007 Gaming Notebook Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 12GB Memory 750GB HDD 128GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" Windows 8.1

Pros: Super Slim -> Almost No laptop of this kind at this size.
Solid Build
Fast (SSD Works Nice)
Beautiful Laptop
Decent GPU (GTX 860M)

Cons: GPU GTX860M (Kepler Version. Maxwell would have been preferred at this price point)
At this price, I would expect a little higher specs like a bigger SSD or a higher GPU.

Other Thoughts: I didn't get the chance to use this for long since I ended up returning it. The piece I had received had a defective camera device which was the reason for my return.

Newegg has been most helpful in the RMA process (in progress). If it hadn't been for the camera this a 5 start laptop.

4 out of 5 eggsGood performance, build quality lacking

This review is from: MSI GS Series GS60 Ghost-007 Gaming Notebook Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 12GB Memory 750GB HDD 128GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" Windows 8.1

Pros: 1. Quiet fans, stays cool (for a gaming machine, obviously it ain't sittin' on your lap)

2. Love the keyboard, colors, feedback, font are all cool

3. Excellent speed and graphics display

Cons: 1. Build quality. Not what you'd expect for $1,600.

2. Trackpad responsiveness - not very much.

3. "Warranty void if opened" sticker on casing = no upgrades

Other Thoughts: I'm not going into details on specs, you can read that in the description and there are benchmarks all over Youtube. This is a review for the average gamer. this is an awesome computer and would get 5 stars from me if it were not for the subpar quality of plastic components around the screen. The bezel on the front separates from the LCD ever so slightly, as mentioned in many other reviews. Additionally, there is a long plastic tube that runs between the hinges that is a little loose. Definitely lacking the solid feel of the Razer Blade, for instance, its main competition. The display, however, is top notch.

Runs FFXIV, SWTOR, WoW and Wildstar all at highest graphics settings beautifully. I have encountered zero lag at highest settings in any of these. I don't play FPS games or the latest action titles, so can't speak to those.

The trackpad seems to be a common gripe among reviewers, and I concur. It has a tendency to pick up palm edges and get stuck, and the clicking responsiveness just isn't there; they really should have included separate mouse buttons. If you don't game with a mouse, be prepared to do so if you purchase this machine, or else be a bit frustrated from time to time. It isn't AWFUL, just pops up now and again (I still don't use a mouse for my MMOs, by the way, despite the pad's shortcomings).

General agreement among all reviewers regarding the Steel Series backlit keyboard and accompanying software. No dissent from me, looks and feels fantastic.

stays cool, but you aren't going to be resting this machine on your lap. I don't use a cooling pad, simply a small lap desk, and I feel no heat whatsoever. Fans are pretty quiet, much more so than the GE60 Apache, which I returned in order to purchase the Ghost.

Here's the bottom line on why I purchased this machine: The GE60 Apache was great, but too hot and fans were too loud. I started comparing the GS60 Ghost and the Razer Blade. I settled on this due to the cheaper price and greater amount of storage for data. Do I regret it? No. 14' on the Blade is too small. Blade Pro is too big. Is another 500-600 bucks worth a better build quality in the Blade's aluminum chassis? Nah, not to me. Worth the clickable buttons? Nope. I am pleased with this machine other than the separation of the screen bezel and loose plastic piece. If it really starts to bother me, I may just hit it with a dab of super glue and move on with my life. Buy and enjoy.

4 out of 5 eggsAmazing Machine. Great Value.

This review is from: MSI GS Series GS60 Ghost-007 Gaming Notebook Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 12GB Memory 750GB HDD 128GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" Windows 8.1

Pros: (I'm a Cisco network engineer by profession, and a PC + XboxOne gamer. After looking into Lenovo and Asus, decided to go with MSI. Highly recommended.)

1. Aesthetics, beautiful design, aluminum body, lightweight, gorgeous keyboard and HD screen. Sleek lines.

2. What you get for this price is very good. I'm a HC gamer. I own a custom built gaming desktop, but wanted a laptop to play games. Currently playing FIFA14, Path of Exile, and Diablo 3 on highest settings, and no issues. Runs at 60+ FPS, no issues.

3. 128GB SSD + 7200 RPM 750GB HDD is fantastic to have.

4. I thought i wouldn't like Windows8, but it's growing on me.

5. I didn't find too much bloatware to be honest with you. (they can be uninstalled if not needed)

6. SteelSeries keyboard customization engine is RIDICULOUS - how much you can do with is too cool.

7. HD 1920x1080 resolution - BEAUTIFUL screen. I'm used to playing FIFA14 on a 27in. Samsung 1080p monitor, but when I played it on this laptop with the same resolution, it looks like a whole different game. The graphics look more crisp. This GPU is solid.

8. Highly recommend it to someone looking for a gaming laptop. MSI brand has definitely upped their game, major competition to other brands.

Cons: 1. As everyone has mentioned, the mousepad is a "tricky" requires some patience getting used to it. To some it will drive crazy, but an external mouse will solve all.

2. The monitor hinges feel a little weak, but nothing too much to worry about. Hopefully you will constantly move it from place to place.

Other Thoughts: Taking out a single star because of the feel of the keyboard. Don't get me wrong, the SteelSeries keyboard with the backlit functionality is awesome. But coming from a long time ASUS keyboard, the feel of the keys will take me some time to get used.

Overall, an amazing machine, highly recommended.
