1 out of 5 eggsTried Several - All have the same ISSUES

This review is from: MSI GS Series GS60 Ghost Pro 3K-095 Gaming Notebook Intel Core i7 4710HQ (2.50GHz) 16GB Memory 1TB HDD 256GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 870M 3GB GDDR5 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Slim Profile
Light Weight
Lots of Power for the Money

Cons: *BLUETOOTH
is Currently Broken on every GS60 and GS70.
(It works briefly and then falls asleep, to wake it you have to go to PC Devices then Bluetooth and once you open the page it wakes up for another 5-20 minutes.)
*WIFI
Is currently Broken. You have two options.
1. Use Windows Generic Drivers. You will get up to 50% of your internet speed. Like I get 50mbps out of 100. However doing this means you can't play online games. Titanfall won't event establish a connection because the WIFI is cutting in and out really fast. Other games will play then disconnect.
Option 2. Use Driver 17.0.5 You will be able to connect to games like Titanfall but there will be Lag. Your internet download speed will be 2% of your normally speed. I get around 2-3mbps. However that's on a good server like Speedtest.net. Expect Internet pages to take several seconds even up to a minute to fully load. Think late days of Dial-up early days of DSL at best.
Then there are the small issues, that would just make this a 4/5 of it didn't have major issues.
Lots of LED bleeding with the LED backlit screen. You can see white lines on the sides with bright screens and big areas of glow with the dark.
The Keyboard is nice but does have some flew like others mentioned. (not really an issue imo).

CUSTOMER SUPPORT
The Tech support is a Joke. Clearly they are not MSI only employees as they know almost nothing about the Brand or anything specific to MSI products. Like the WIFI and BLUETOOTH issues. Their only advice is to do a complete PC reset. Which by the way does nothing. They know nothing about which drivers work better than others. Or anything else. So don't count on support to fix you laptop.

Killer Gaming Network
It's broke! Surprise! There is an application out there that will remove this software and let you have a minimal install. Which helps I think but just another example of this product being broke out of the bag.

Drivers
Like the ones mentioned above plus several others with minor issues. It seems MSI bought a lot of fany sounding parts but put no effort in making sure they are compatible with each other. Good idea maybe, but poor execution.

Other Thoughts: Bottom line
If you can live with major issues like no Bluetooth, poorly functioning WIFI and other driver issues, web cam, The Killer Gaming Network (junkware) and more in the hopes these issues will be resolved.

5 out of 5 eggsEverything I need

This review is from: MSI GS Series GS60 Ghost Pro 3K-095 Gaming Notebook Intel Core i7 4710HQ (2.50GHz) 16GB Memory 1TB HDD 256GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 870M 3GB GDDR5 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: I'm a web developer who hadn't updated his PC in 6 years. I wanted something I could do work on as well a game comfortably, and this thing does it all. When not gaming, I can have all of my developer tools and then some and work like I'm on a meaty PC (well I am). With a mini display port to hdmi, I can get two other monitors going via hdmi for more real estate.

The keyboard is very nice, especially with the customizable back it colors. The actual keys are good to.. you can press on the very corner of a key, and the key will go down, no wobbliness.

Gaming is awesome. I've been playing through Dark Souls 2 on max settings, and with an air cooling board, it just purs.

So much RAM.

The SSD is a delight. Windows reboots in a matter of seconds.

This thing is incredibly light. That's the first thing people have noticed when they play around with my laptop. It's very thin and very light.

Cons: None. I seriously love this thing.

Other Thoughts: I did end up buying a adjustable cooler master cooling board so that I could get some extra height on the laptop monitor, as well as provide some airflow for gaming.

2 out of 5 eggsDissatisfied

This review is from: MSI GS Series GS60 Ghost Pro 3K-095 Gaming Notebook Intel Core i7 4710HQ (2.50GHz) 16GB Memory 1TB HDD 256GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 870M 3GB GDDR5 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Fast CPU, slim, light, high graphics resolution

Cons: Loud fans even when idle, mediocre gaming graphics, horrible WiFi latency during load, hardware drivers incompatibility with Windows updates

Other Thoughts: Quick shipping, was really excited to get it and try. I play BF4, so immediately installed. The NVIDIA GeForce Experience program set the "optimal" settings to "Low" on most aspects, but I didn't notice originally.

What I did notice is that I was being kicked off from servers for "high ping latency". Usually I choose the closest servers with ping less than 60ms, so I was really surprised. And indeed, during the gameplay the ping goes up to 500ms or more on WiFi. Didn’t try with wired LAN.

Well, I said to myself, if not for gaming, at least i can do some work on it with 16GB, because my software development programs require more than 8GB I’ve had on a previous laptop. Bummer, the native resolution & default 200% font size were incompatible with some of my IDEs and tools, and native resolution & 100% font size was hurting my eyes, so I’ve switched to 2048x1152. The fonts are a bit blurry, but I guess I can live with it.

The fan noise is loud even when nothing is happening in “Balanced” power mode. I didn’t find a way to control fan speed directly, and had to switch to “Power saver” to make the noise somewhat manageable, but that obviously reduced the UI responsiveness, which was why I chose this laptop for.

And then… the BSODs started. I didn’t have one for a while so that caught me off guard. About 8-10 mins after boot, it would just hang for a few secs and throw DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION. A bit of research (in between crashes) revealed that this can be caused by hardware, firmware or drivers. Next obvious step - MSI tech support.

I’ve pened a ticket, where I said that there are BSODs, and the laptop has latest windows updates. The response was that I shouldn’t have used drivers from Windows Update, and drivers should be downloaded from MSI website… WHAT? The Windows is configured to download and install updates automatically!

Anyways, since no link was supplied, I went to msi.com and through menus found http://us.msi.com/service/download/
Since the Live Update is not compatible with MSI laptops, I’ve selected in menus Notebook > Gaming Series > GS Series > GS60_Ghost_Pro_3K > Drivers. That led me to 404 (not found) page. After reporting this next obstacle, I was given a direct link to drivers. Now there are 16 drivers on the page, and the prospect of manually downloading and installing them, hoping that one of them will resolve the issue, does not really appeal to me. Once I’ve enjoyed hacking away with my hardware drivers, but right now I just want to have a machine that just works.

Starting with hardware inconveniences and issues, incompatibility with Windows default functionality, and finishing with not really helpful tech support, I’m disappointed with this purchase. Probably will go back to tried and true ThinkPads.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome Computer

This review is from: MSI GS Series GS60 Ghost Pro 3K-095 Gaming Notebook Intel Core i7 4710HQ (2.50GHz) 16GB Memory 1TB HDD 256GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 870M 3GB GDDR5 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Great build quality.

Great processor, very fast.

Enough memory, I've only ever used up to 75%.

Boots up extremely fast.

Very light.

Quite fans during normal use. They do get nosier when gaming but. nothing annoying.

HDD is 7200rpm.

SSDs are consistently reading/writing at 1,000mbs.

Can easily play games at 3k with High/Ultra settings at 30+ FPS.

Screen is beautiful. Prepare to lower the resolution. Chrome at 3k doesn't look very good. Webpages were fine but text on Chrome itself was hard on the eyes. You also might want to find a program that will change the resolution automatically when you open certain programs.

This computer has 2 Graphics Cards 1 Integrated and 1 Dedicated. On normal usage the computer will use the integrated GPU when using for above average activities it will switch to the Dedicated GPU (You can change programs default GPU with nVidia GeForce Experience)

Cons: (If you can call these cons)

A little susceptible to finger grease on the aluminum.

Some MSI bloatware (Nothing that changes performance) + Norton.

You have to press CTRL + Arrow key to turn up/down volume and brightness, (I'm used to dedicated keys).

Sound could have a little more bass.

If you plan on gaming on you lap it will be hot. With that being said I have never have my palms or fingers get hot. So the heat stays mostly in the back of the computer.

By default all the personal folders (Downloads, Documents, ect..) are on the C (SSD) drive. I moved them to the D (HDD) drive to keep space free for programs on my SSDs.

Windows key has been shifted to the right side of the space bar. Hasn't been to hard to get used to.

4 out of 5 eggsThe Laptop to Rule Them All

This review is from: MSI GS Series GS60 Ghost Pro 3K-095 Gaming Notebook Intel Core i7 4710HQ (2.50GHz) 16GB Memory 1TB HDD 256GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 870M 3GB GDDR5 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Fast - When I say fast I mean I need to turn on VSYNC in some games to ensure I'm not blowing the lid off the GPU because of high FPS. Games like World of Warcraft are running on full ultra with 4x AA and averaging between 60 and 80 FPS in a 10 man raid. Crowded areas drop, more due to the CPU usage. It laughs at Metro Last Light and gets decent frames on full ultra with Bioshock Infinite

Specs - 16Gb of RAM, 3Gb of VRAM, 4710hq new generation CPU. 2 solid states drives and a 1Tb hard disk prove for near limitless capacity.

Look and Feel - Extremely lightweight. Case feels sturdy when carrying although the screen feels somewhat flimsy. There have been poor reviews about the Steelseries keyboard, but I dig it. I love the backlighting and the key presses feel great and they're quiet. Another plus about the keyboard is the number pad...and a number pad that FITS in a laptop design.

Cons: Bloatware - There is so much bloatware installed on this thing that I did not have the sanity to go through each little piece of software and remove it. A clean install was needed to ensure everything was wiped

Hot and Loud - This badboy gets hot. And I mean Hades hot. The GPU can reach temps of 93c during long and heavy gaming sessions. When the fans kick in it's like a jet engine blowing next to me. This is expected in such a gaming laptop but still a con due to the noise.

Storage - The title of the laptop is misleading. It's not 1 SSD, nor is it 256Gb. It's 2 120Gb SSDs setup in a RAID 0 configuration. I knew what I was buying because I read all the specs, but the title is wrong. If I was supposed to get 256Gb of space I'd like to know where my missing 16Gb are

GPU - The GPU is a beast, but it's not the newer 6Gb variant. With a nextgen laptop I would've liked to see the newer card included in this machine.

Other Thoughts: Bottom line: I'm a technology and gaming geek. I've been building my own rigs for a while and have been researching for months on a desktop replacement for my new house. I was looking for near desktop speed in a lightweight form factor that I can transport around the house. This laptop exceeds all of my expectations in terms of speed, portability, look and feel and just overall awesomeness. There are some that will note the price as being a downside, but I disagree. Compare to other thin, lightweight, gaming laptops and there is currently no other laptop on the market that meets or exceeds those specifications in such a small, thin form factor like this GS60 Ghost.

I docked an egg for mainly the bloatware and heat. This laptop could've come with less bloatware. All the security software and demo software I could've done without. Also, as I noted in the cons, this baby can get hot. I highly recommend a laptop cooler if you're interested. I also did not get 256Gb of storage in the SSD raid...so not sure where the disconnect is in the title.

If you want a thin, lightweight, powerful beast of a machine that you can carry around then this is it.

5 out of 5 eggsLightweight and with lots of power.

This review is from: MSI GS Series GS60 Ghost Pro 3K-095 Gaming Notebook Intel Core i7 4710HQ (2.50GHz) 16GB Memory 1TB HDD 256GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 870M 3GB GDDR5 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: * Light weight laptop and power pack (though it would be nice if the power adapter were smaller in physical size) - total weight together is about 6 lbs
* Very sharp graphics even with it's glossy screen; there are some difficulties if viewing from the side, but it's beautiful straight on.
* Very fast boot due to having dual SSD system drives
* Decent sound system for its size and weight - yes, it's a little tinny but still better than most other laptops.

Cons: * The trackpad, to me, is awful. It may be where I need to get used to the gestures and such but, I would highly recommend getting a mouse.
* Keyboard layout is a little different where the Windows key is on the right, pg up/dn are on shared keys and there is some keyboard flex (minor).
* Screen is a little flimsy. Didn't think it was that noticeable, but since it is so light, it feels like you could snap the display off if you're a little too rough with it.
* Extra bloat ware - easily removable, but just annoying none the less
* Default display settings set the zoom at 200% which made me wonder if I got the 3k model.
* Lighted keyboard is nice but not as bright as I thought it would be, but it's not a deal breaker.

Other Thoughts: Overall it's a great lightweight laptop (though I wouldn't necessarily use it on my lap since it can get hot under high load), that is zippy enough for gaming and multimedia tasks. It is upgrade-able after registering for warranty but it's not the easiest thing to do. Since this version is pretty maxed out memory wise, you could drop in higher capacity SSD/HHD if desired. Doesn't come with a optical drive (though they include a disc for drivers... very funny MSI), but optical discs are becoming a rarity.

5 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: MSI GS Series GS60 Ghost Pro 3K-095 Gaming Notebook Intel Core i7 4710HQ (2.50GHz) 16GB Memory 1TB HDD 256GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 870M 3GB GDDR5 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Been waiting for this kind of configuration for a couple years. Wanted something to play games on any ol' where but also wanted an actual 'laptop'. Couldn't bring myself to get involved with the 8lb, 17" monsters out there. Looked at Razer Blade and it was close, but for reasons I can't really put a finger on I couldn't make myself push the buy button on it. When the GS60 released however I was sold at once. It's a couple hundred less expensive than the Razer Blade, so that helped. All the spec.s were spot-on per my dream-machine vision. Premier 2-day shipping as promised - other sites I looked at were pre-order only, so kudos to Newegg! Cool MSI shipping box too. The overall user experience is just as snappy as it can be, booting and coming out of sleep far more quickly than I expected, I assume because of the SuperRaid dual-128G SSDs, possible also due to Windows 8 which I haven't used before. 3K display is simply marvelous. Games are running great although I haven't stressed it beyond Borderlands 2, Skyrim Elder Scrolls, and Civ V. I let Nvidia GeForce Experience do the optimizations and games seem to run as well as on my desktop with an overclocked GTX 560 Ti. As far as I can tell anyway, I'm not really a GPU performance maven. Nevertheless there's no doubt the GTX 870M does the trick. What I'm happiest with is the thinness and its 4.3lb weight. I'm actually starting to carry it around different spots in the house and use it instead of my Galaxy S4 for general browsing, email, and Facebooking. Wireless and Bluetooth working fine. Better than fine actually. While setting up Steam and getting ready to install Borderlands 2, I noticed the option to play via streaming from my desktop. I thought "what the heck" I'll give it a try, and was astounded at how well it worked. Was it the Killer Network feature, my 5Ghz N router, or what? Pretty impressive whatever the reason. No CD/DVD, but who cares? Although it is funny that they ship a superfluous CD with manual and drivers on it. Battery seems to be good for 3 hours or so; probably could be improved with judicious tweaking of graphics settings. Steelseries keyboard feels perfect for me; light, responsive, just-right springiness and travel. I'm trying not to let any sort of weird cognitive dissonance color my enthusiasm, causing me to overlook glaring flaws. I.e. "I paid a lot for this thing, therefore it MUST be a great buy." The fact is that for this configuration of laptop there are no serious flaws. I am really very happy with this excellent MSI machine and would recommend it to anyone wanting a very light and handy gaming laptop.

Cons: Civilization V doesn't seem to want to go into a full screen mode. I'm sure I'll figure it out eventually with enough Googling, but everything else 'just worked' using the GeForce Experience settings at 2048x1152. Not really an issue with the machine itself I'm sure, but there it is. As with all serious gaming machines, this rascal gets might toasty under full graphics load. Heat is all towards the back so palm rests stay cool, but no denying it'll cook your left knee good without a cooling pad for gaming. Finger and palm prints are pretty noticeable. And of course there's the conventional vitriol established for our time that dictates I rant against Windows 8.1, but for the love of Pete, it's just not that bad, and frankly it's been kind of fun to play with. Could do without some of the bloatware although it's easy enough in Windows 8 to uninstall, and doing so provides a certain cathartic satisfaction.

5 out of 5 eggsAdventures in high DPI

This review is from: MSI GS Series GS60 Ghost Pro 3K-095 Gaming Notebook Intel Core i7 4710HQ (2.50GHz) 16GB Memory 1TB HDD 256GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 870M 3GB GDDR5 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: * Very fast boot time, game loading, etc. The RAID-0 SSDs are serious business!
* Excellent 3d performance. Bioshock was playable and looked great at high detail and native resolution (2880 x 1620), and was smooth on less ambitious resolutions.
* Sound is decent, with a bit of bass. I don't expect much from laptop sound systems, though. The sound got subjectively better when I turned off most of the default 'enhancements' that the SoundBlaster settings had enabled.
* I got this for work/development as well as play, and text looks great at 3k resolution (if your app and windows can be made to cooperate, see cons).
* Good ergonomics. It's not super heavy, and the keyboard feels comfortable under my hands. I love having a number pad.
* Good aesthetics. I like the understated brushed metal look, and even though the glowey under-lit keyboard is a little flashy, I find it tasteful.
* Working on high-res photos in glorious 3K!

Cons: * Slight LCD backlight bleeding around the corners. Mostly only visible on black backgrounds.
* Windows 8.1: Part of my problem is change aversion, but it takes a little getting used to. (Needing to use alt-f4 to close metro apps until I found out the silly drag-motion to do it)
* The state of the Windows software ecosystem and high DPI displays. Here is the part that presents the most irritation for me, being my first foray into over-1080HD resolutions: Older windows apps aren't built for it. You have two choices, upscale or squint. Windows' scaling options aren't really built for the power user and they took some adjustment to hit a good balance between overly tiny UIs and blurry upscaled pixels. It would be kind of nice to be able to choose scaling settings per app, and maybe windows will improve this feature some day. Metro apps handle the high resolution natively; I almost wish I could convince myself use Metro Internet Explorer, since it handles the high res display so nicely compared to Chrome.
* Dual GPU options aren't obvious, but should be configured. The desktop usually runs on the integrated intel graphics, which is fine and saves power, but if you want to do some heavy WebGL in your browser, you need to make sure that it is configured to use the NVidia part at launch. No problem, but it took a moment of research for a modern gaming laptop noob. A fun observation: If the cooling fan on the left side spins up, it's the GF870 working out, on the right, it's the Intel.

Other Thoughts: I'll be trying a few GNU/Linux flavors on this in the next few days. I'm holding out hope that I won't have to limit the resolution to 1920x1080, but I fear that this might be one area where MS/Apple have a head start.
