Question 1

I am looking at this model with the 8gb 960M PE60 6QD vs the 16gb  950M PE60 6QD for work and gaming, which would have the best of both worlds? Currently the 960 model is $899 and the 950 is $1199. I also would like to add the M.2 sdd, thoughts?

I'm a network administrator and work with low, medium, high, and insane hardware on a daily basis. I bought this laptop for my father who is 64 years old and doesn't treat machines as well as he should, so I'm telling you it's a sturdy machine. He run's a HAM radio station downstairs and his old computer just wasn't cutting it for him so after some research I picked this out as a desktop replacement, and that's exactly what it is. He uses it upstairs in the living room, playing all sorts of games and when it's time for HAM radio he takes it to his desk, plugs in a few cables and now had a multi-monitor setup. With the i7 6700HQ paired with DDR4 RAM, which runs great for a single 8GB DIMM ( 4 slots total btw so you can upgrade, I recommend you put 1 more 8GB stick in but you don't have to. Be sure to match the Cas timings and latency for optimal performance if you do. ). The backlit keyboard is very handy. The engineering put into the cooling is superb. Large copper heat pipes and plenty of heat sinks where needed. There is one button you can hit to make the fans go into overdrive, it's loud yes, but cools the system down VERY quickly. This is the only laptop I can safely say can chill on a bed, on your lap, all the no no places and it will be fine because of that burst of cooling you can give it. The display leaves a little to be desired, but gets the job done. The graphics will run off the Intel I7 chip first, the "H" in the SKU means that CPU has the best graphics chip in it. Then if needed, it will pull in the 960M to boost performance cooperating with each other for the best performance. I don't know a specific name off the top of my head for this process, but I see it taking place on this laptop. Lastly, There is a nvme port for a SSD, USE IT!!!

Question 2

Can this laptop run new, high-performance games like The Witcher 3, Fallout or Overwatch?

I run witcher 3 easily on this laptop. I do not have the other games. The only downside is you have to use the extra cooling fans that come with the laptop. Those can be a bit noisy but the extra fan feature that MSI has is amazing. The laptop stays completely cool to the touch. Witcher 3 can be run at medium to high settings depending on your fps preference. I play on high and don't really notice much of a difference in gameplay.

How is the heating on this device? Will it burn my lap? Also, about how long does the battery last, and are their options to increase it significantly?

This laptop runs nice and cool. On graphically or cpu intensive games the laptop will be warm, but never uncomfortable or hot. When I'm taking notes in class with my laptop on my lap the surface is cool but the bottom becomes a little warm if I leave it placed flush against my lap. Placing the laptop on a desk fixes this problem (that said, without a desk the laptop is never hot or uncomfortable, the warmth is also due to setting the power mode on "Power Saving" which disables the active fan cooling).

The battery does not last too long, about 4 hours on lowest settings, lowest brightness, and with wifi, microsoft office, and chrome open and active. On maximum settings without games running but the mentioned applications active (and maximum brightness) the laptop lasts up to 2 hours.

Personally I bought this laptop as a nice mix between gaming and productivity for school. I'm never really far from a power source so the 4 hour battery life is usually more than sufficient. If you disable wifi and chrome you may get more time from your battery but I have never really tried that.

what is the run time on battery?  if can lessen the fan (can increase so thinking can decrease)  do you think it would run okay and last longer?

I have been using this laptop primarily for school since I got it and have found that on the lowest brightness setting, I can still see it fine in most classrooms. The fan has not been an issue (I don't recalling it ever running in class, where I mostly take notes and run statistical software) and the battery lasts about 3.5 hours on the lowest brightness, which is long enough to get me through my longest class. I have not tested the battery with videos or games yet.

This laptop has a M.2 slot for a solid state drive. You do not need to remove the optical drive or mechanical drive included.

Can it be downgraded to Windows 7? Has anyone attempted it?

So i just bought this computer....that said i love it! but i swapped out my old hard drives from my old laptop into these, when i did that all my programs were written to windows 7, so we tried to just change the whole computer over to windows 7 since its what i knew and it would allow me to work on my programs for school immediately. BUT!!!!!! we found out that this computer is SO new and has such top of the line hardware that when and if you do switch it over to windows 7 that the software doesnt immediately recognize the windows 7 format, hence it calls for you to manually turn on all your ports once you restart (i.e usb drives, hdmi etc.) so i switched back to windows 10 had to reformat all programs to windows 10 and had to re-install a few programs such as Rhino 5, and the adobe suite package, everything other than that transferred over correctly. But all and all said, yes you can but its a hassel, much easier to just nut up and and go to windows 10. Hope that helped somewhat.

Any idea if the screen is IPS or TN? How have you found the screen to be so far (bright, crisp, dull)? Does the matte coating dull out the colours a lot?

On the laptop, the monitor is listed as "Generic PnP Monitor". I could not find any documentation on exactly what kind it is, but when viewing it from the sides, I have not noticed any distortions in colors. Colors are distorted looking from the top or bottom, though. I have had no issues with color brightness or contrast in my work, but I have done very little graphic design on it so far.

Does this laptop have expandable RAM slots and M.2 slots for an SSD?
