4 out of 5 eggsSecond review of this item

Pros: Awesome performance for the price

Cons: The price actually went up since Sept. 09

Other Thoughts: I've ranted on about the problem I've had with this laptop last year.
I'm happy to say after receiving a replacement from Newegg, the first one I had must have been a defective one.
This machine has so much performance for the price at the time.
After about 6months and a price hike of $200, I'm not sure its as good of a deal at this point.
I replaced the hard drive with a 7200rpm WD drive and I couldnt be happier.

2 out of 5 eggsGreat PC until hardware failed

Pros: Great Graphics card and Processor, Keyboard does not flex when typing (I hate that). Ran smooth until....see below

Cons: Larger than other 17" notebooks Ive seen. Hardware failure after less than 2 months

Other Thoughts: I bought this laptop in mid December, as soon as i received it I made recovery discs, then installed Windows 7 and it ran great until a week ago. One day the laptop just locked up, mouse and everything. I had to do a hard shutdown, and after that it blue screened once and I never find out what the error was because i could not get back into the OS long enough to check the error, it would just lockup. I ran startup repair it froze in the middle of that, froze during hard disk test, mem test, image recovery, cd recovery, new OS install. Sometimes it would not POST or display and it did not boot into Safe mode, it froze loading sys files. So needless to say its been shipped to HP for repair. I may have just received one of the bad ones, or it was jarred during shipping, but after this and seeing 2 of the brand new HP laptops at work fail, I'm kind of losing my faith in HP.

Pros: Runs Vista pretty good
Hard drive capacity
Num pad
Nice design
Screen resolution
Gigabit lan and N wireless
Two hard drive bays

Cons: Touch pad
Battery life

Its too hard to install second hard drive, especially to remove plastic covers!

2 out of 5 eggsA bit disappointed

Pros: The number pad is awesome, overall look of laptop is awesome.

Cons: Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but others mentioned the nice frame rates and how the laptop plays games such as wow in nice setting.
I've tried numerous methods to get the laptop to use it's full potential, but it would always have a stuttering graphics during play. I can't understand how a mid rage notebook can't display a 5 year old game in mid setting without stuttering.

Also, static when many different sounds are being outputted (example: 10 man raid with ventrillo on)
I couldnt hear any of the people voices because of all the static.

I've returned the laptop to Newegg because two keys on the keyboard were rubbing against something inside and making squeaky noise any time I press it.

HP support is the worst I've seen. I know most of the support staff have guide lines to follow, but I think the support staff at HP are robots with scripted replies.

Other Thoughts: This is the first time I've had to return something to Newegg and I expect great service from Newegg, but I think this may be the last time I buy HP anything.

If anyone got some suggestions on how to solve some of my problems with the graphics and sounds, please let me know.

5 out of 5 eggsA Worthy Machine

Pros: - Good GPU: ATI Mobility Radeon HD4650 is best option in price range.
- Good processor: Don't be put off by the relatively obscure P7550 processor -- performance-wise, it's about equal to the P8700.
- Solid build.

Cons: Style is a bit "casual". The machine is obviously marketed for home/entertainment use; I wouldn't buy this model for use in a professional environment.

Other Thoughts: I replaced the pre-installed Vista with a trial version of Windows 7 Enterprise. Installation was fast and smooth, and the laptop performance was noticeably faster after the new OS install -- this also wiped out the pre-installed trial software and assorted bloatware.

At time of purchase (late August 2009), I judged this the best combination of processor+graphics in a 16 or 17 inch model at roughly the thousand dollar price point. I bought through Newegg. Very satisfied so far.

Current Windows Experience Index:
Processor: 5.9
RAM: 5.9
Graphics: 6.7
Gaming Graphics: 6.7
HD: 5.8
Overall: 5.8

This seems like a good home machine, and has been problem-free for me to date. It qualifies for the Windows 2007 upgrade offered through HP.

My last home laptop was a low-end HP model (circa 2005) with a 14" screen, which cost substantially more, felt flimsier, and had a few minor problems. So far, I'm impressed with how much better my ownership experience has been.

5 out of 5 eggsNice bang for your buck

Pros: Tons of features normally found on more expensive models, looks really slick, runs much cooler and quieter than some of the older models in the DV lineup, beefy graphics hardware

Cons: Should come with a Blu-ray drive, really wish the HDD was 7200rpm. A backlit keyboard would have been nice, too.

Other Thoughts: I bought this to replace an older DV series that fried its motherboard out of warranty. The performance has improved with the hardware, obviously, but on top of that, HP has made considerable improvements in some key areas, specifically heat dissipation and noise. This runs much more quietly and much cooler than my older one. The graphics are great (runs Crysis well - it's a little choppy on high, but definitely playable), and there have been a few minor design improvements as well. They moved the optical drive to the front corner so the a/c and usb cables don't get in the way when you open it, they removed the annoying latch on the front (really, what good did that actually do?), and it seems to be lighter than my old one.

Also, I got it with a newegg preferred account, and spent just over the requisite $999, so I got 0% financing for a year. $100 a month and it'll be paid off, same as cash.

This is a good laptop for the money.

4 out of 5 eggsa great laptop

Pros: I did research on 17' laptop, dell/hp/tinkpad. Finally, I have purchased the HP laptop for my wife and she was very enjoyed it. Nice glossy wide-screen with most outputs.

Cons: it was originally running microsoft vista. I spent 3 days to downgrade to windows xp with all required driver. it's a supper laptop.

Other Thoughts: HP should install the windows XP as default

3 out of 5 eggsNice but random wifi problems

Pros: First of all the machine is reasonable for the price. The screen more than earns the title of brightview. 720p movies look fantastic, and the audio is more than I had hoped for. It came with the optional upgrade for Windows 7 which I also appreciated. Graphically, although the Radeon 4650 is rated mid-level, it really does a nice job with everyday things and everyday games. WoW runs very nice, and Crysis is fine at medium settings.

Cons: Well, here's the problem so far. We bought two of these at once. A husband/wife deal. One has run flawlessly the other ran great for a week and now drops the wireless internet signal repeatedly. The Wireless router/modem is about 2 feet from where the laptop is sitting and out of nowhere, bam, no connection. And then you might not get the connection to pick back up without going through 5-10 minutes of aggravation. The laptop uses the Intel Wifi 5100 AGN card, and if you check online, you'll see this wireless card has significant issues with dropping connection. The next question will be what is Newegg or HP going to do to help. Stay tuned

Other Thoughts: None

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect for me

Pros: Excellent display, webcam is great for skype video calls, and the speed and power is more than adequate. Plenty of hard disk space. By far the best laptop I have ever used, and its great for web development and graphic design. It even plays games very well, but is not a gaming machine by any means. The card reader is the fastest I've used and the HDMI is great for viewing things on my 52" 1080p LCD.

Cons: I was getting a blue screen when trying to update Vista after purchase. Once I updated to service pack 2, the problems went away, but it was frustrating. I recommend that if you purchase this with sp1, skip the critical updates and install sp2 right away, then do your regular updates. This was not the machines fault, I blame Vista here, so it was not enough to take away an egg.

Other Thoughts: I bought this to replace an aging desktop that was no slouch (2.53 ghz (OC to 3.2 ghz), 3gb, and Quadro Graphics), but in comparison this thing blows it away. I am now using the desktop as a media/data server.
