1 out of 5 eggsRefurbished Model is Junk

Pros: Small, lightweight, fairly perky, comes with Windows 7

Cons: -Refurbished Windows 7 version lacks many drivers, add-ons and features of original Dell product
-Minor annoying cosmetic issues like missing rubber feet
-Battery does not lock fully in place, probably a worn latch (read: bad quality testing)
-Some keys on keyboard have stopped working
-"WARRANTY VOID IF REMOVED" stickers slapped on user-upgradeable areas like hard drive bay

Other Thoughts: First of all, let me say that I cannot return this item and have not tried, because I violated the warranty and replaced the hard drive. This is my responsibility and I totally accept that. I am not giving this laptop one egg because I cannot return it; I am giving it one egg because it is, in my opinion, not suitable for resale as "factory refurbished". The level of quality, features and fit and finish is far more suitable for "used", or perhaps "bought at garage sale".

The fact that it comes with Windows 7 is great, but this "upgrade" comes at a price: only the most basic driver package has been installed, and absolutely none of the original software. Many of the interesting features of this laptop (see Dell's product page for the complete list) do not work on this machine "out of the box". Some—many, in fact—will still work if you go to the trouble of downloading and installing all of the drivers and software to do so; some will not. None of this is adequately explained in the documentation, and you can pretty much completely ignore the "Overview" section of the product page here on the site.

The numerous minor scratches and dings are of no concern to me, but the fact that the battery can be easily pulled from the back of the unit because the latch does not seem to hold it in place certainly is. As is the fact that the S and W keys abruptly stopped working shortly after taking possession of the thing.

All in all, I wish I had paid a hundred bucks for this instead of three hundred twenty nine; that way I would justify my purchase of a replacement keyboard and battery. This machine, in its current iteration, is far more a "unique fixer-upper opportunity" than a "factory refurbished machine". I would avoid it if any more come up for sale.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent choice for a mobile, workhorse laptop

Pros: - Solid build (mostly, see cons)
- Good stock components
- Excellent keyboard and touchpad layout (Thinkpad-esque)
- Can hardly tell that it's a refurb

Cons: Screen bezel seems a bit weak, and there's a "loose" screw-in panel on the bottom that seems to be held in place by stickers. I'd also prefer if the screen snapped into place when closed, rather than just being kept in place by its hinges.

Other Thoughts: I've only had the laptop for a week, but the performance has been great so far. I voided the warranty right off the bat by putting in a 120GB Samsung SSD in place of the stock 160GB hard drive, and putting in 8GB of RAM. After installing Linux Mint onto the SSD (which works extremely well, very compatible with SSD and Laptop), I replaced the DVD drive with the stock hard drive using an aftermarket DVD-to-HDD caddy. I've been extremely happy with the performance -- Linux Mint boots in ~6 seconds, and the computer has handled everything I've thrown at it. I don't need the latest Intel processor, TBs of HDD storage, and video games... I needed a reliable, mobile workhorse that could handle the intensive programming I do as a computational physics student, not to mention all that other office stuff!

4 out of 5 eggsPortable Power

Pros: Solid build, long battery life.
Plays 1080p mkv's with no stuttering.
Magnesium alloy chassis.
Worthhile upgrades.

Cons: No RAID 0, only 2 USB ports, no Displayport or HDMI.
1080p mkv's look pretty good but not excellent likely due to screen limitations.
NO WAY TO UPGRADE GRAPHICS, so gaming would be limited. Not a dealbreaker for me.
Only these minor complaints.

Other Thoughts: Got mine from Dell a while back, not from the Egg- but I am a devout Egg customer.
Added the battery slice, gave me over 10 hours of 1080p mkv viewing time.
Upgraded to Samsung 128 GB SSD -from the Egg- for C: Drive. 250 MB/s write, 300 read.
Swapped the DVD out for a HDD caddy from the Bay and installed a Hitachi Refurb 640 GB- from the Egg- and have PLENTY of storage!
Mine came with the 2.53 GHz and it is plenty fast. Don't worry that this one is a little slower than that. The 4 GB RAM is plenty but upgradeable to 8. 1066 MHz only, though, either way. One downside to a Dell.
Lighted keyboard that types well.
Torrent the reinstallation ISO for Dell Windows 7 Ultimate and use Win-to-flash to install from USB Flash. Auto-activation!
Docking station available with more USB and video ports.

Very worthwhile purchase, especially if you are willing and able to make these mods/upgrades.
Why spend $1600? Save a thousand bucks!

Came close to awarding 5 stars but that is ver
