very nice for the price
- Pros: This notebook seems to be the best laptop available anywhere for under $1000. It comes with complete disassembly instructions and the CPU appears to be replaceable, so it looks like one could buy a 2.2 or a 2.4ghz cpu from Newegg and get something that would ordinarily be in the $1500 range. It is reasonably fast with the existing 1.8ghz cpu. The screen is extra wide and really nice. I haven't seen any problems with Bluetooth and WiFi as others reported. Newegg is always great to deal with.
- Cons: No XP driver for the camera was included on the CDs. The driver I downloaded from the ZT systems site does not work. If anyone has solved this problem, I'd like to know. It's not a really critical thing, but an extra feature is always nice.
The power supply plug in to the notebook is buggy -- I have to unplug and plug it before I get a connection and the battery icon disappears from the system tray. It would be nice to have longer battery life.
- Other Thoughts: I got rid of Vista and added memory as others recommended, spending a little over $900 for the computer, memory, and a travel mouse.
Perfect after some changes
- Pros: This laptop offers very nice specs and I am quite pleased with the performance and light weight. Audio quality isn't normally important for me in a notebook, but the Realtek ALC888 is amazing; the jacks double as an expansion to a surround-sound setup and headphone quality is entrancing.
Comes with a manual showing how to access the CPU, fan, RAM, PCI-e card, and HDD. The case makes these a breeze to access, and at the same time achieves excellent cooling. It's not the prettiest, but ZT (well, MSI) managed decent aesthetics.
Battery life in vista is 2 hrs, 3 in linux--excellent in my book. Great deal for 1.8GHz core2duo with dedicated nVidia--nice linux support, too. The site is unclear, but ZT provides a 1-yr warranty.
Single stick of ram makes upgrading less expensive. If you are good with computers, don't fret over brand-name vs. off-brand. Hardware is hardware is hardware and this hardware is a steal at this price!
- Cons: CPU fan wasn't connected and might explain the burns-outs reported. Again, the case provides easy access to check the fan connection-Takes 4 screws/10mins. If you aren't up to the task get someone who is. Not worth the money/time if it lasts a month! Came with a thing saying ZT tested it with scrutiny. Yeah right.
comes with vista32, yet supports 64 leaving several performance-enhancing features unused. I installed vista64: only the cam seems to lack 64bit drivers, didn't look into it as I don't care and rarely use windows.
Wifi card design is, well, dumb. The chipset is poor, has unstable linux drivers, and sits behind a USB controller in the PCI-e slot. This design impacts performance. I put an Intel 3945 in its place-much stronger.
Wifi/btooth switch is unintuitive but documented. Wifi can actually be used even if the indicator is off, btooth can't, so I made it just a btooth switch.
Could use more RAM, but 1GB is justifiable by the low price.
- Other Thoughts: Some users who gave low ratings or complaints about non-issues rate their technical level high. It seems some think fixing a driver issue requires high technical ability. It's sad that the rating is affected by such users.
8400M G isn't awesome but is a good card. windows users should learn the options in the config utility. For Linux use the latest drivers and read the docs-a certain feature causes sluggish compositing if mis-configured.
It's easy to eject the CD tray when grabbing the unit. I'm capable of operant learning so it doesn't happen anymore. AC input position is more an issue, it can slide out if not on a solid surface.
The power button works. There's a 3 sec or so delay before obvious activity to read temp. sensors and ascertain necessary fan speed. Off AC power you must press & hold for a sec. This delay may be confusing, but not an issue. Many laptops run the fan at full speed then adjust. A delay is arguably safer.
Clean + Effective
- Pros: Gotta say it's everything I hoped for. Put in the extra memory (Crucial 1GB 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Notebook Memory Model). I prefer XP. All the XP drivers are on the 2 CD's included. (the wireless Lan driver is on the "Communications" CD. All the other XP drivers are on the "Notebook" CD.)
- Cons: There's no backup "Vista" CD. So I made a Norton "Ghost" recovery disk to use when I want Vista again.
If you're like me and read instructions after the fact, you should know/learn that the blinking light on the far right is to show when Wireless Lan and Bluetooth are active. (activated by the same button on the keyboard.)
- Other Thoughts: It works fine. Go for it!
