The Toshiba Portege Z series notebooks are techno-wonders built with superior craftsmanship. With a unique shock-absorbing design, the ultraportable Z series laptops are built for durability as well as mobility and performance. The trim design of this ultrabook also still manages to retain all of the ports you’d expect in a standard laptop. In addition to being extremely thin and light, they’re fast-loading and can boot up within seconds.

2 out of 5 eggsCompact but Slow

Pros: This is a great little laptop, compact, light and very portable. The backlit keyboard is great and the screen is pretty good. Battery life is decent.

Cons: Memory is insufficient and can only be upgraded to 6GB...very poor design that effects performance significantly. When I purchased laptop I thought I could upgrade to at least 8GB, some websites claim this; in actuality has one removable slot of 2GB with 2GB soldered in so you can only expand that one 2GB slot to a 4GB card. I will do this and hope that it helps with the performance, if it doesn't I may have to sell the unit. I am using it for school work and the memory is always the significant factor for all my operations. I am very upset about this.

Other Thoughts: The keyboard keys are very small which is ok since my fingers are not very big but if you have big fingers don't buy. Also the mouse pad is ok.

4 out of 5 eggsQuick and light

Pros: Light weight.
Sleek look.
Quick boot time, faster than a macbook air.
Good wifi reception.
Nice looking display.
Metal case.

Cons: 128GB SSD to me is small for a complete all around machine for business use, by the time you install line of business software, office applications, and user data you have to start watching what you have on it.
No 10 key, not that there is space for it.
No backlit keys.

Other Thoughts: I have my own personal thoughts about people who use ultrabooks and macbooks, little of it is good.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Bought it for my mother-in-low, as she wanted something really light and with a bright screen. She loved it. Outstanding screen resolution, good sound, very light..

Cons: So far none

5 out of 5 eggsdido

Pros: I can confirm what most people here are saying.

I customized the software and settings for my boss and never heard a fan. I never really heard the computer. It does boot fast, etc.. like you'd expect from a SSD. Not too much crapware.

Cons: Not really a con, but every time i opened the laptop up, i keep worrying about cracking the screen or something. This thing is very light and thin.

Other Thoughts: It's my boss's laptop and he travels a lot. He bought it at Best Buy (it would have been Newegg if i had known he was buying one). I think it is going to work very well for him. I personally don't use portable computers (because my life is mostly in front of a computer), so i won't be buying one. I do highly recommend this system if you want a solid, light and fast computer. Especially for the travelling business man.

1 out of 5 eggsrun away fast

Pros: none

Cons: died on week before warranty ended.
repairs only extended the warranty 30 days.
same problem after 3 more months of use.
I have a 600.00 worthless piece of TOSHIBA GARBAGE!
15 months old. shameful.
I wanted to put 0 eggs for a review, but 1 egg is the lowest.

Other Thoughts: Toshiba's official policy is too bad for you. we got your money!
do not buy toshiba. with this policy the warranty is absolutely worthless!!!!!!!!!!!!! they don't have to actually fix it with !
and they will not!
poor customer service. shameful!
I cannot stated this harshly enough!!!!!!
never ever again.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect Balance

Pros: Light, all the ports you need on board, SSD plenty fast and big enough for this niche market, great for surfing and most anything but the most strenuous tasks. Plastic case and finish which I thought at first to be a negative is actually a big plus in not only reduced weight but it does not accumulate finger prints nearly as bad as the brushed alum. I know this doing side by side test at Best Buy. Love this Ultrabook!

Cons: I do think the screen could be better but I may be unfairly comparing to all my high rez DT systems.

Other Thoughts: Cannot stress enough how light and therefore portable this ultra feels. So nice to have the power and speed in such a light package. Oh and a bios upgrade eliminated the fan noise except during the most power intensive use which usually involves sound anyway that drowns it out.

4 out of 5 eggsToshiba Portege

Pros: Very Light. Great for Web browsing, document processing, light tasks. I5 is not worth the purchase, i3 does everything you need from an ultrabook. I don't find the fan annoying, it is ok for me. I was going to buy a tablet, glad I bought the ultrabook instead. Battery life is decent.

Cons: For what I expected, no cons. Don't expect to play games on this or have the best media streaming experience. Although I was surprised with playback of 1080P blu-ray movie and netflix. Of course, it is not Apple when it comes to multimedia.

4 out of 5 eggsHandy&Light

Pros: Open clamshell to windows 8sec or less, VeryLight, Plays Web Video well over wireless, bought to replace netbook, excelent in that reguard, not sure if I'd pay more than the 699xmas sale at best buy

Cons: Battery is only 6hrs or less and the fan is on the bottom, got to make sure its not covered when used as a laptop!
Its not a i5.

Other Thoughts: Toshiba would have a hit if the kept the price at the xmas intro, wake up toshiba and lower the price, you make the cheap SSD in it!

5 out of 5 eggsAn excellent Ultra-slim

Pros: -SSD makes it blazing fast--I'd never had the pleasure of using a Solid State Drive before this point, and nothing has ever made me appreciate the difference between one and a platter drive like this

-Backlit keyboard is surprisingly handy in a dark room at night, and even now, this early in the morning as I write this it's coming in quite handy

-Great screen with impressive image quality and resolution

-Pretty and attractive design, and the brushed metal casing means that it's durable and not inclined to scratch or ding

-Very light, and easy to carry around, even compared to my old netbook

-Four to four-and-a-half hours of battery life isn't prime, but it's enough for what I use it for

-Runs cool and quiet, with only a faint hum to indicate that it's on

-Does have a built-in webcam

-Cold boots in under eight seconds, and resumes from sleep in less than one (I mentioned it was fast already, but I felt an example would help you visualize it.)

Cons: -Screen is very thin and can flex easily, which can be scary until you realize that's you probably won't be doing that very often--it's not a touchscreen, after all

-Setting up my browser, email, etc. was a little quirky at first, but probably no fault of the computer itself

-Came with more junkware than I've come to expect from Toshiba

-You're not gonna be playing Starcraft II or Battlefield 3 on this--this isn't a gamer's laptop

-Like it or not, there are better battery lives out there

Other Thoughts: I've actually come to rely on this little baby more than my GAMING desktop anymore. It's far more comfortable to compute from bed, especially when you're mainly web-browsing, IMing, and emailing.

Serious gamers need not apply to this thing. This machine is built more for business folks or basic computing. You'll run a word processor comfortably, but try and do some video editing and you might come up short.

Toshiba has a reputation for good reliability in recent years, as well as friendly customer service. The venting fan went out on my netbook about a year ago, and they replaced it promptly and without protest. And I have a feeling if something went wrong here, they'd do the same.

One interesting note though! I bought my Toshiba Portege at Best Buy on sale for $699.99. (Here, at the time of this review, it's $899.99.) It's exactly the same in every way, but the fact that it's $200 cheaper at the brick-'n-mortar store surprises me.
