5 out of 5 eggsHappy with it

Pros: Very fast Core i7-2630QM. I use it for regular work-related tasks, including working with documents (MS Office) and C++/C# development. I installed Crucial M4 256GB SSD, 8GB DDR3 (cheap today) and upgraded to Win7 Pro (required for Corporate IT feature set). This thing flies without overclocking. I have CoreTemp posting highest core temperature in the task bar and it seldom gets to 50 deg C. Boots to password dialog in 17 seconds and in 25 sec start-to-WiFi authenticated. While there is only one USB 3.0 port (few laptops have more than one so far), even with HD and SDD both connected through USB 3.0 hub on the same port on motherboard, disk cloning was much faster than on USB 2.0. I am quite happy about that. I would recommend this laptop to a friend.

Cons: When replacing stock HDD with Crucial M4 256GB SSD, I found that the SSD did not fit snugly all the way in to the SATA plug for some reason. I could not tell if it is a mechanical compatibility issue of the SSD or the Acer or both are a bit out of spec tolerances and the problem happens just with the exact combination of the two. The Scorpio Blue HDD that came with it fits just fine. I had to work out some mechanical workaround to make it work not being able to use the screw holes on the chassis where HDD bracket was mounted to.
Second USB 3.0 would have been nice, but for the price, I am happy with one and use a USB 3.0 hub.

Other Thoughts: This laptop does use HM65 B2 stepping south bridge Cougar Point chipset, this might be the reason for the low price and here is why you should use this opportunity to buy this puppy. First I was concerned about the Cougar point SATA issue that has been so much publicized, so I did quite a bit of research and wanted to save you the trouble of going through this yourself.
Here is the gist:
Acer utilized the workaround proposed by Intel to PC manufacturers. It is specifically good for laptops that do not have eSATA ports (this one does not). Since this laptop cannot fit more than two internal drives (HDD/SSD and DVD-WR), both are connected to 6GB/s SATA ports 0-1 that are NOT affected (!), so you get to work over fastest SATA ports available today and you'll be happy with 6GB/s SSD performance. As for 3GB/s ports 2-5, you would not have anything to connect to them anyway and why using 3GB/s, when you have 6GB/s!

I am planning to buy a second one for my family.

2 out of 5 eggsHow long will it last? Realistically, how long can you reliably get with moderate daily usage?

Pros: What about the fact that the bug only affects 5% of chips? I guess this laptop must be one of them for sure or is it you have 95% chance that this product is not affected?

Cons: need some perspective about odds on how much of a gamble or cost benefit ratio on this. replies appreciated.

5 out of 5 eggsreponse to justnow

Pros: Currently the cheapest i7 laptop on new egg.

Cons: Integrated Intel HD 3000 graphics.
5400 rpm HDD, however most of the time is replaced anyway with the ongoing affordable prices of SSDs.

Other Thoughts: The defective cougar point chipset is old news found back in the first quarter of 2011, it was estimated by Intel that a full recovery of updated hardware would be established by April of 2011. Everyone should be informed before dismissing newegg's currently cheapest i7 laptop. Do your homework before buying.

1 out of 5 eggsNot a bad deal for i7 SB CPU

Pros: By far the best part of this notebook was the i7 Sandy Bridge CPU especially for $699.99. There's a reason why the price is that low (refer to the cons section for why).

New Egg/UPS shipping was fast. I got the delivery in 3 days! UPS damaged one side of the package. Thankfully, the notebook inside wasn't.

Cons: The 5400 RPM HDD and HD 3000 onboard graphic were the two weakest components of this notebook. WEI disagreed with me though.

One of the first thing I replaced was the WD6400BPVT (WD Scorpio Blue) HDD with a Toshiba branded 7200 RPM HDD (same score-wise).

It came with W7 Home Premium x64 and plenty of Acer's bloatware pre-installed. I made the mistake of formatting it without backing up the Acer specific drivers or creating a recovery disk. I was thinking I could just go onto Acer's website and download the drivers myself. What I did not expected was Acer got a ton of duplicate drivers since this model can be configured with different hardware components.

Be aware that this has the HM65 B2 stepping cougar-point chipset that's supposed to have been recalled. This might explained the low price for a 2nd gen i7 notebook. That's pretty shady of you Acer/Newegg!

So this $699.99 will be no good in 2 years when the SATA degrades to horrible levels due to the chipset bug.

Other Thoughts: WEI score (with 7200 RPM HDD):

Processor: 7.5
Memory (RAM): 5.9
Graphics: 6.3
Gaming graphics: 6.3
Primary hard disk: 5.9
Base score: 5.9

If you don't want a defective B2 stepping that's supposed to have been removed from the market, then steer clear of this notebook (main reason for the low score of 1 egg).

However, I'm too lazy to return it to Newegg. I've already spent several days setting everything up to the way i like it. I don't feel like RMA'ing this back and having to do everything all over again. Besides, it probably won't last for 2 years anyway (supposedly when the bug degradation at it's worst).
