3 out of 5 eggsGreat gaming computer.... but..

Pros: -Great gaming laptop. It plays all games on high resolution as long as you have it plugged up with the power cord.
-Light weight and the screen is very bright. Sometimes you have to move the screen to counter the glare.
- The keyboard takes some getting used to and when you have the mouse pad turned on sometimes while typing you'll move the curser away from where you were originally typing to another place. It can get really annoying. You can counter act it by placing your hands in the right place.
- The energy consumption is ok. Sometimes if you are running a few things it will drain it fast. Gotta constantly charge it.
- Once again great gaming for someone that is looking for something cheap but useful. I love this laptop however.....

Cons: -The only way you can play games on this laptop is by having it plugged up. Meaning you can not play a game on the run without having your charger.
- It has no light on the keyboard when it is dark so you cannot see the keys and therefore you have to know how to type without looking at the keyboard.
- Also the sound has worsen. I have to have it at like 8 notches for me to be able to hear sounds from the laptop. It works fine with headphones but the speaker on the laptop it self doesn't work great anymore.
-Some of the keys on the laptop aren't working perfectly but it doesn't bother me too much.
- ONE OF THE WORST PARTS. Is that i have only had it for less then 6 months i got it on 1/17 of this year and it has already blue screened on me 4 times. I will probably be sending it back to the manufacturer to get it replaced if it continues to happen. I love this laptop (being it is my first) and its kinda sad that after such a short time it already is blue screening.

Other Thoughts: I would of loved to give this laptop 5 eggs. I love it and it is amazing for its price. It is an amazing laptop. I would recommend it to any gamer on a budget. It works great for school and for gaming. Its a little big but hey more space on the screen :D!. Sadly, due to the speaker problems, and blue screens which have begun to happen only 6 months after i bought it. I will have to give it a 3 1/2 eggs.

5 out of 5 eggs7 Months In, Great Purchase

Pros: What sold me was the Nvidia graphic card. What kept me was the friendly lightweight dependability of this laptop. And the extremely handy number pad. It runs everything I throw at it, no problem. I use it mostly for internet surfing. I've never strained this laptop to the max but Skyrim on high ran a little choppy. Has a great screen that doesn't seem to get as bright as I want it to.

Great investment. Even though I don't use this laptop to its full capability, I know it would be able to handle whatever comes up. That is why I say it's dependable for when time calls for a full rendering in Adobe After Effects or 3D modelling in Maya. This baby will back you up.

Number pad and two finger scroll come in extremely convenient. I find myself wishing all laptops had these feature.

Great battery life. It's been 7 years and I still get 5hrs easily when fully charged. Pro-tip, when utilizing your laptop as a desktop, remove battery pack. This will elongate your battery life.

Cons: Speakers don't get very loud.

Webcam resolution is below par. Pixelated. Good enough for webcaming I guess but don't expect to make youtube videos.
As everyone says, a lit keyboard would be nice.

Other Thoughts: No matter what, the best laptop for $550.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat little laptop

Pros: It's inexpensive and performs very well in spite of the low price! The high-end video card is what makes this machine, and so far it has handled every game thrown at it. Graphics are superb!

Cons: The video camera is rather low end. This is not really surprising, but video chats have only OK quality.
Also, the sound does not get very loud. I suspect it was made primarily for headset use, but I'd like to have seen it get louder.

Other Thoughts: If you want a great gaming machine at a low cost, then this is an excellent machine!

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Laptop, does everything

Pros: I am a college student who uses this laptop for school work, including solid modeling and stuff like that. I also game with it.

This laptop is really quick. I will vouch for others that it can, and does, play games like Skyrim on high without even a blip. Wireless works better than i've seen in other laptops, and i've had no problem with the keyboard or anything.

Even the integrated graphics are nice. When running high def video, I don't notice any problems, and it looks great.

Battery is nice too. In windows i could probably get at least 5 hours of battery life with low power usage and dim backlight.

Cons: 4 GB of ram seemed decent, but I upgraded to 8 GB of 1333 DDR3 ram and the difference was impressive.

Linux was another issue. Every distribution i've tried has failed to support the backlight out of box. Also, Optimus technology has no great support in linux, and took some fiddling too. Once all of this was fixed, the battery was draining extremely quickly. While sitting idle, it could probably last 2 hours maximum. Not enoughh to knock off an egg, mainly because it may be my own fault

Other Thoughts: The person who reviewed before me I think got a defective one, because it really goes and I never saw it go above 70 C using benchmarks, which push it pretty hard.

Overall a great laptop at any price (within reason obviously), and one I would buy again.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat laptop, some issues though.

Pros: Long battery life, especially in a low power state for just taking notes in class. A decent gaming machine, can play counter strike source quite well on high settings. Powerful processor and the GT 540M is a good GPU for the money on this system. Awesome design, looks cool. Touch pad is in a convenient location. has USB 3.0.

Cons: I believe people are over boasting on the FPS rates for titles such as BF3 or Skyrim. I bench marked this thing at optimal settings after removing the bloatware and i average 28FPS on all low/off settings in BF3 Online 64 player servers. I bet Skyrim wouldn't run too well in the towns full of NPC/effects either.

Another major con can be heat. My laptop in a cold room on a laptop cooling stand will reach temperatures up to 84C underload in BF3 for example only after 15 minutes of gameplay. This is a bad temperature for the CPU and i stop playing since it continues to rise.

Other Thoughts: Bought for 600$ from another site. I believe the laptop is defective because these temperatures are way to high and its winter temperature. The intense heat could also explain for the lower than average performance other people are claiming. I will RMA mine for overheating and hope my new one works better.

I would also consider upgrading the CPU to an i7-2630QM since its the same socket size and not that much more expensive if you resell the pulled i5-2430m. Although take caution since the i7 is 10 watts more.

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing computer

Pros: So far I can't find anything to complain about. Good size, good weight, great hardware. The GT540 is enough to run almost every game out there, most on medium to high settings. It's the perfect combination of size, weight, performance and price. You can get a stronger gaming system but it will be heavier, more expensive, and the increase in performance will be minor unless you drop an extra grand or more over the price of this system.

Cons: Slow memory. I upgraded the memory to 8GB of dual channel DDR3 1333 (Newegg item N82E16820148345). It comes with DDR3 1066 memory but it accepts DDR 1333. Considering how cheap memory is these days you'd be crazy to not upgrade it for the performance boost. I don't understand why they just didn't use 1333 to begin with. They can't be saving more than a few bucks going with the slower memory. The faster memory will make a HUGE difference in the performance of your system and it's a simple and cheap upgrade to do. The only other con would be the hard drive. I wish it was a 7200 rpm drive. I don't wish it enough to pay for a replacement drive, but I would have paid a few dollars more if it had come with one.

Other Thoughts: Like I said, overall this is about the best combination of size, performance, and price. It is more than enough for the average gamer, light enough to use as an everyday laptop, and can process well enough for the vast majority of applications. The only reason to get a "better" computer is if you have a specific niche requirement like needing to run a certain engineering CAD program or you want something just for LAN parties. But plan on paying a whole lot more for that kind of specific function system. For 90+% of people out there this system will do everything they need and more.

5 out of 5 eggs3weeks in impressive

Pros: This laptop so far has been beyond impressive for me for the price I paid (was $550.00 with discounts). 3 weeks in now running and I am amazed at the speed. As a veteran gamer of 36+ years, this machine is the best bang for the buck I have seen yet. It can do everything my 25th Anniversary Qosmio 17" desktop replacement can do at a 1/3 of the price. The portability for me is a big deal as well and I got tired of building rigs and spending extra money and getting little for my return.

An example of the games I can run currently at High settings are Skyrim, Dirt 3, BF3, etc... with zero FPS issues. However, I did put 8GB of Crucial RAM into this. I also run a Cooler Master Notepal X2 that was the best bang for the buck for this laptop. The one giant fan produces enough cool air that I am satisfied and it is very quiet not to mention 3 times cheaper than my Zalman coolerpad. So far, I could not be happier with this purchase minus a few griefs in the cons section.

Cons: My biggest complaints are as follows:

1. Over bright screen on OS, however, in games, color palette, etc. looks good.

2. The ridiculous placement of the two usb ports (2.0 and 3.0) at the bottom right of laptop that is annoying as all get out with a mouse.

3. Due to #2, the disc tray is in the back right side so the design is not optimal.
4. The space bar must be hit dead center most times which is annoying.

but I can live with these gripes easily for what I get out of this machine and the capability. There is nothing current on the market gaming wise that I cannot run at high to ultra settings.

Other Thoughts: If this machine becomes available again I would even say for the listed current price its still a great bargain and will easily rival more expensive machines.

5 out of 5 eggsNice machine

Pros: Great laptop for gaming/leisure. Decent display. Good price for a 2nd gen i5 processor and GT 540M dedicated graphics card. Keyboard is nice and spacious, and also comes with a num pad. Laptop stays pretty cool even after long periods of graphic intensive use. Comes with two USB-2.0 ports and one USB-3.0, and an HDMI output.

Cons: No back-lit keyboard. Like others have said, bloatware is annoying, but not unmanageable.

Other Thoughts: I bought this to replace an aging XPS 1330 laptop. I needed one capable of gaming on the go, and this does it perfectly. No it won't push 100fps in Crysis 2 but it will play it at a tolerable frame rate. Battlefield 3, MW3 and SWTOR all play at decent frame rates, considering that this is a laptop under $700. Just Cause 2 benched at 22.46 fps with AA at x2. (Concreate Jungle run)

To boost performance, I replaced the 5400RPM 500GB drive and got a 256GB Sata 3 SSD and bumped the memory from 4GB 1066 DDR3 to 8GB 1333 DDR3, and noticed a sizeable gain in overal performance. Deffinetly worth every penny.

Considering that there are other machines with similar specs as the Aspire, and are anywhere between $800 to $1300, this is laptop is a steal. Highly recommended!!!!

3 out of 5 eggsOverall Okay

Pros: The capabilities of the gt 540m are amazing and can run any of my games on medium to high settings but my games are not as recent as skyrim or battlefield 3.

The i5 second gen. is very fast.

Cons: The MOST noticeable con of this laptop that I had was that my right speaker has a very noticeable rattling sound and it sounds like the speaker is lose or defective. I would send it back to try and exchange it for another one but I would be shipping it from NY to CA and would have to wait another 2 weeks before I even get the laptop back. I know laptop speakers are not supposed to be all that great but this rattling sound is VERY noticeable and VERY hard to just "ignore". There is a possibility that all of these laptops have that sound but I highly doubt that.

The pixels of the screen can literally be seen if you look close enough meaning you can see the lines and rows of pixels on the screen. This doesn't affect the laptop quality that much, however it can become really noticeable sometimes and looks very unappealing.

The HD is not partitioned so if you can a virus that is destroying your one HD of information because you had to store it there, be ready to look to extreme measur

Other Thoughts: For the price of the laptop (I got it for $550) I wouldn't demand that all my problems be fixed, but the speakers should've been constructed better, no matter the price tag.
