3 out of 5 eggsupdate to my other review

Pros: Same as my other review

Cons: Same as my other review

Other Thoughts: Figured out the beeping and screen dimming problem. The warehouse help at Acer in Mesquite TX probably didn't pay a lick of attention when they boxed this laptop up and just threw in whatever power adapter was closest at hand when they also reached for the tape to wrap it out and send it out. Their high efficiency isn't as high as I thought, and it ought to cost them a new AC adapter, since the 65W they sent is only slightly insufficient to power this computer which can take up to a 120W power adapter. I determined that if I unplug the computer the screen dims and makes that beeping sound. Thought it was heat related but no, it's just the AC adapter overloading. Bad form, Acer, bad form, sending out a high end computer with an adapter made for the $300-$400 computers you sell (which are great; I own five more i3-powered Acer laptops, an i3 desktop, and three A6-powered Acer desktops as well). I would appreciate a contact back from Acer on this. I'd like to get the right adapter without spending $55+ elsewhere to get one of the universal 120W ones and then have a dozen extra tips floating around.

4 out of 5 eggsEverything you need, almost

Pros: Quad Core i7, 8GB memory, two hard drive bays, good screen resolution, snappy graphics card with extra video memory, easy to turn off trackpad (Fn-F7), has full size SD card slot up front, keyboard has full sized number pad, has Windows 7 and not 8, beautiful glossy finish, 2 USB 2.0 ports *and* 2 USB 3.0 ports (a lot of laptops give you 3 ports total so you get one of one kind and two of the other), has *both* HDMI and VGA ports.

Cons: Pokey 5400rpm hard drives ruin the speedy experience of the quad core and GT640M graphics. Glossy finish is going to be impossible to keep clean and glossy for long. Trackpad is very sensitive (issue for some - I use a mouse so I don't care). Bloatware has to be removed (McAfee, WildTangent, other typical Acer stuff). It is heavy, but it is a 17 inch laptop so that is to be expected. Panels on bottom do not expose enough of the workings of the laptop to change processors (the 2670 is a speed demon but 28x0 and 29x0 versions could be an improvement). Speakers are very tinny sounding for being "Dolby" and "Performance Tuned" but I love the speaker grill, it's very sexy. See Other Thoughts below for gaming info.

Other Thoughts: Purchased refurbished on that auction site from Acer themselves. I live in Wichita Falls TX, won the auction at 1pm on a Tuesday, they shipped ground from Mesquite TX, and it arrived 1pm Wednesday afternoon, very impressive speed there! Once I got the bloatware off the only speed hangups are from the hard drives(s) spinning up. I can't wait to pull one to replace with an SSD. Shopping for one now. Of course I'm on NewEgg for that. I paid $619 for this laptop, if you see it under $700 anywhere it's a screaming deal. Sure it's not Ivy Bridge but look at Passmark. This i7-2670QM gets 6109. The Ivy Bridge 36xxQM models get anywhere from 5700 to 7800. This Sandy Bridge chip beats two of the five Ivy models. One other slightly annoying thing, the power cord plugs in on the back right side, so if you don't get it out of the way it'll hang up on the optical drive when you open it.

GAMING: first thing I did after setup was play GTAIV with my Steam account. When it hits 80C it beeps and the screen dims for a second. Now mind you I was playing at max settings, 1600x900, 4xAA, detail and density all the way to 100, and I was getting 31-35fps with FRAPS running, and I don't have the cooler stand I ordered yet. This thing is gonna scream once it's on the cooler and I cut back from Very High to High and cut the detail/density down to 50. When not gaming, it idles between 38C and 45C, typical readings from Core Temp are in the high 40s low 50s while doing non-gaming things and about 55-60C when running updates or virus scans or playing DVDs or other intensive tasks. The thermal limit for the SBi7 is 100C. I just wish it wouldn't do that beeping thing until 90C instead of 80C.

So cliffs: change out the drives, don't think about upgrading the CPU, and use a cooler when you game.

4 out of 5 eggsOverall good

Pros: Laptop is very good specs for the price and does everything needed

Cons: The design is a bit annoying and in my first week a keyboard key (left arrow) got stuck and the design is annoying, with spaced out keys and the mouse pad is wayyyy to the left for some reason.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat laptop for the price!

Pros: Got this laptop (very) shortly before leaving for a deployment to Afghanistan (where I currently am kickin' it). I wanted something with a good bit of storage space (even though I have an external HD), enough RAM I could have photoshop open while watching old episodes of Top Gear or what-have-you, and an extended (numpad) keyboard. Got all that and a sweet graphics card for a lot less than the top of my budget, so what's not to like? It's been great so far, and I *MAY* end up increasing the RAM just for shiggles at some point to keep it going even longer.

I'm not a *HUGE* gamer by any means; just the occasional FPS, non-online (the internet out here is nowhere close to good enough for it, not that i'm a big fan of it in the first place...just not my thing), but it handles that with room to spare.

It does get warm fairly quickly, but in fairness, it gets full of dust a lot quicker than the average laptop that isn't in a deployed environment. ;)

All in all, it's everything I wanted and even a little more.

Cons: None that I can think of, MAYBE only coming with 8 gigs of RAM but honestly that's not really even a very big deal.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Laptop

Pros: -Slick design, very flashy
-4 hour battery life running integrated (roughly an hour @ 100% usage)
-About an hour or so running on the Nvidia GPU @ 100% usage
-Two HDD slots
-Supports up to 16GB of RAM
-1600x900 resolution as opposed to the 1366x768 resolution on other laptops
-Vent on the side rather than in the back
-Speakers have excellent sound quality being a laptop

Cons: -Finger print magnet
-Both HDD's @5400RPM, quite slow for today's standards
-Power button feels flimsy
-Touchpad is slightly unresponsive, although I just use my naga so this is no problem to me.
-Webcam has very poor quality, microphone is OK
-The keyboard has very small arrow keys, although it's not really a big deal.

Other Thoughts: I'm able to play Skyrim on High 1600x900 with the HD textures Addon at around ~40FPS average.
It runs Borderlands 2 maxed (Low PhysX) @ ~45fps

I recommend upgrading the hard drives to SSD or higher rpms and purchasing an external mouse.

Also, I reformatted to a fresh copy of Windows 7 64bit to save some time removing bloatware, which this thing came with a ton of it.

Overall, great price for a laptop.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat laptop, why acer?

Pros: -Great graphics (maxed out dishonored, Civ 5, etc..)
-Great CPU (only got it to 30% with a heavy Civ 5 game that use to take 5 mins with a core 2 duo at 3.0 Ghz at 100% load, now only takes 10-40 secs)
-2 USB 3.0

Cons: -Keyboard doesn't light up
-All side port USB (no rear ones)
-CPU runs really hot (maxed at 90°C
-Dolby home theater (it would automatically lower volumes of my games while in skype)

Change the settings in the nvidia control panel to use the geforce 640M 100% of the time instead of auto select, otherwise your graphics will be very bad. because it will decide to use intel 3000 HD graphics which was a difference of 15Fps on the lowest settings in dishonored to 60Fps (Maxed) on the highest settings

5 out of 5 eggsFast large looker

Pros: Huge screen
very Fast for a laptop
Low price for a fast laptop

Cons: no recovery disks (as noted in the discription).
Lots of junkware preinstalled for your incovinence.
It's for my wife, not me

Other Thoughts: My only complaint is that I wish it had an OS disk, so I could wipe the bugger, and start fresh. It is an awsome laptop for the price.

5 out of 5 eggsEXCELLENT

Pros: Loading is fast. Great Resolution. Is to setup. Keys are well spaced with an easy flow. I haven't fully took for a run around the block yet. Even for its size it is not as heavy as I expected or read it to be. Love the screen size will be great for gaming and movies. I can see myself toting it with me to work and over night stays.

Cons: Fingerprint magnet. Will probably purchase a clear laptop skin for it.

Other Thoughts: Great so far.
