is notebook windows 8 different than regular windows 8 ?

This is my first time using Win 8 so I can't help you there.  Toshiba requires their specific driver for everything.  You can not use manufacture drivers.  Toshiba is horrible about updating their drivers also.  If I had it to do over again, I would have chose a different manufacture that does not lock all their drivers.

yes and much more since I bought it I have yet to find it's limits dam thing is fast and im in love with it.im in college so use it a lot is a very sweet laptop best I have ever owned.

Can the HD be shut down and the computer run from the SSD?

The computer is already set up to run from the SSD, which is the default for all programs, apps & user files (e.g. My Music or My Pictures). It's generally recommended to use the SSD for programs & apps, and the HD for file storage. But it's entirely up to you whether you want to manually store files on or move files to the HD, or to change your default user files to the HD.

Can I get this computer without windows 8?

Any new windows computers are going to come with windows 8, to get anything else you would have to buy it and install it yourself in replace of windows 8. I have windows 7 on my Imac and it works perfectly and wasn't hard to install. Just google it.

Is it at all possible to get this with a touchscreen?

I do not remember a touchscreen option when I ordered my laptop back in November. However, I can tell you that aside from that, I'm super pleased with my laptop. It's fast, efficient, and includes a lot of storage. I previously used a Dell M6700 high-performance laptop (which I also highly recommend depending on the type of work you're doing), but this Toshiba comes in a close second.

I have been researching this laptop and have found conflicting information about the HDD, is it 7200 rpm or 5400 for this X75-A7298 model?

The 1TB secondary drive is 7200.  The boot Drive is a 256gb SSD.

2. Does it have an SD-Card bay?
3. Does it have USB 3.0?
4. Is the optical drive a reader only or is it a burner too?  If it is a burner too, does that include BR?  Also, is it SuperMulti DVD±R/RW Double Layer?
5. Is the harddrive controller RAID/SATA?
6. What size is the L2 cache and does it have an L3?
7. Is the OS Windows 8, 8.1, home or Pro... can I get 8.1 Pro?
8. What type of WiFi, if any, does it have?  Does it have BlueTooth?  If so, does it have Dual Band and is the BT 4.0?
9. Does it have Firewire?
10. Does it have HDMI?
11. Does it have Lightning?
12. Can the harddrive be upgraded to 2GB?
13. Does it have built in camera/mic?  Don't want to assume and it is not mentioned here.
14. Does it have Turboboost Technology?
15. Is the monitor backlit and does it have TruBrite?
16. Does it have a built in TV receiver?  I really loved that about my old Qosmio... RIP.

1 - I think so, check MSI website.  its DDR3.  DDR5 (GDDR5) is for video memory.  DDR4 is next but its too new and expensive.
