Absolutly Fantastic Notebook(after some work)
- Pros: Blazing Fast. Amazing Video for a laptop. Easy RAM Upgrades (aren't they all tho...).
- Cons: Weird Port placement.
- Other Thoughts: Vista Really bites. I'm sorry for all you Vista people out there, but it does really not work at all well. I bought this laptop for running Virtual Machines and playing games. The former it does great out of the box. The latter in directx 10 games run abysmally, Although some things i have read point to DX10 being the culprit. Anyway great notebook just put XP on it. Takes some doing to get all the drivers though.
Great Notebook
- Pros: Great Notebook. It has the best features for the price that I could find. Built in webcam and WiFi. 2.0 GHz Dual core. Nice video chip 6800 GS. The screen quality is great and there is an external DVI connector. There are 4 USB connectors. Good size notebook not too thick. The keyboard feels good and the keys do not feel cheap. Vista. haha yeah I said it. I actually like vista. I've had no problems with it. I don't feel installing XP would buy me much performance enhancement. Besides, weather it sucks or not doesn't have anything to do with the notebooks quality. Asus doesn't have much choice with using an operating system. If they install XP then there are going to be end of life and support issues with XP.
- Cons: Battery life is a little low but thats what you get with a 6 cell. Only comes with 1 gig of ram but for 30 bucks you can buy another gig. It's really easy to install. Just remove 5 screws and your done. I takes about 2 minutes.
- Other Thoughts: Was worried about buying an Asus notebook because I've never used one or know anyone that has one. I really like their motherboards so I gave it a change. I am very glad that I did. I know they make (or did make) notebooks for Sony so that put my mind at ease about buying it. If the quality was good for Sony it should be good for me. I know a lot of people are bashing Vista but I've had no problems with it. The speed is fine and I haven't run into any problems using it. XP may be faster but I'm not sure it would be worth the reinstall. I did buy an extra gig of ram so I did not try running Vista with 1 gig. There are some bloatware programs that you need to remove to optimize boot up.
Nice.
- Pros: Most bang for the buck I could find. Swivel cam is nice to film the kid, and watch at the same time. Dedicated video card is great. Build quality is amazing for the price.
- Cons: A little bit heavy, but not really a con considering it is built like a tank. Partitioned HD from the factory. It's 160GB, I don't see the need to have 2 partitions. Not sure if the restore disk would allow me to change that with a reinstall, and I don't really store anything on the laptops (I have a MacBook Pro, too). Also has a trial of Norton Internet Security, which is huge and stinks, so that got uninstalled.
- Other Thoughts: This was for the wife for Xmas. Comes with Vista, and also bought 4GB of ram to go with it. Can't really complain about it. It is reasonably fast, but XP Pro would probably be twice as fast. The wife likes Vista, so it stays. Go ahead and take the plunge, the features speak for themselves. This laptop rocks.
