2 out of 5 eggsI own this !

Pros: -Good performance and relatively smooth gaming experience for older games.

Cons: -Faulty graphics card that will die on you slowly over time.

This is a MAJOR fault many have experienced with this machine because not only will the hardware reach extreme temperatures and boil your lap (if you're not careful), the high heat will also eat away at the Nvidia card until it is completely melted onto the motherboard, so expect to reach temperature exceeding 80 Celsius on a normal basis, and even higher temperatures exceeding 100 C (212 F) when running a decent game.

My G1S's screen display eventually failed on me, so I went to my local computer repair shop and was told that I would have to replace the motherboard along with the card since it was inseparable from it. The costs for this were too much for me, so I still hold on to it hoping for the day the screen may one day come back on...

-Old laptop overall.

It runs on the dreaded Windows Vista, unless upgraded, has a pretty bulky design, and the outdated hardware shows how quickly Moore's Law operates.

Other Thoughts: My advice to anyone who is thinking about buying this Laptop? DO NOT buy it used and without warranty like I did, and if you are planning to buy it new for some reason, don't expect it to last very long--it would be remarkably naive on your part.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Charlie,

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product. It's great to know that you like the good performance and smooth gaming experience for older games with the laptop. I certainly understand your concern regarding the graphics card failing, this is an isolated case. If you need further assistance, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# 3582535 on the subject line.

Regards,

Rodel

5 out of 5 eggsGreat laptop

Pros: Great screen, fast processor, HDMI and E-Sata are another nice addition.

Cons: The hd is only 5400rpm, and the ram is only ddr2667. And this laptop has terrible battery life, about 1 hour with full performance settings, 2 with battery saving.

Other Thoughts: Great laptop for the price, there is a certain other wow laptop that is way over double the price and all you get is another video card, a physx card, and a 17" screen

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Excellent monitor with crisp and clear resolutions. Designed very well, nice and sturdy. The hardware is awesome, thats the whole reason i bought it, now we just need the rest of the industry to build more multi-threaded apps. Overall really nice quality product, what i expect from Asus.

Cons: There is always something that's ackward with every product. With this one there is no LED for the ethernet jack. i like my LED's and its a good indicator for low level troubleshooting. Plus it ships with vista, with is just an overall horrible operating system and uses way to many resources for simple things. I recommend throwing linux on it, but then you'd be limited with gaming. Oh, and the battery life is horrible <= 2hrs.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome, but replace RAM!

Pros: The instant savings on it makes it. It looks awesome, totally blows away anything out there in that regard. No, the 8600m GT is not the absolutely fastest thing in a laptop anymore, but its still very good. It almost maxes The Witcher and World in Conflict, and runs Crysis smooth on Med settings. 1680x1050 resolution blows away most other laptop monitors by far! You CAN install XP on it, no problem, with a simple BIOS flash from the ASUS website, no need to slipstream anything! If ya run the vista recovery ya can load most of the ASUS programs and just pull the disk when its almost done, go into XP and install everything. All but the Power4gear and the Webcam work just the same, and for everything else that doesnt work theres XP versions of them online, just search for em. Just make sure to have Vista and XP installed on 2 different partitions.

Cons: DDRII 667, 5400 RPM HDD, Vista, bad speakers, smudgy. I've already replaced the RAM with 4 gigs of Geil, though of course XP/ vista 32-bit only read 3 gigs. HDD i'd like to swap when i get the money, but it works just fine. Runs hot.

Other Thoughts: Overall its spectacular. The ASUS Direct flash/ customizable text on the clock LCD is uber cool, plus the IM warning that flashes if ya have windows messenger minimized. The built in Wireless A/B/G/N card flys. Runs hot, but never does anything stupid from the heat, but ya should buy a cooler anyways. Havent really found a use for the ExpressSlot yet, but its a nice addition.

5 out of 5 eggsDont have it yer

Pros: I dont have the laptop but I am considering getting it. I just had to let the one reviewer know why the laptop doesn't have ddr2 800, well simple word is that it just simply can't, because even the highest end intel chipset for laptops only supports 667 ddr2 speeds. even if you could put in 800mhz ram it will run at 667, so that is why ddr2 800 is no where to be seen in any of the laptops.

Cons: none dont have it yet

4 out of 5 eggsNice

Pros: Best screen on a laptop i have ever used. Made by samsung. comes with dvd burner with lightscribe.

Cons: comes with vista. you have to put windows XP on yourself. Runs very hot. Buy a laptop cooler pad.

Other Thoughts: I had an ASUS F3SV-X1 before this. This one is much faster and alot better with the games i play. It will even play crysis on medium setting, without going below 30fps.

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic.

Pros: Great product, with great speeds. Fantastic computer over all.

Cons: Just a couple things wrong. The CD/DVD player IS LOUD AS HECK! Also, some of the peripheral programs that come with it are annoying and need to be uninstalled.

Other Thoughts: Good shipping from newegg!

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Its absolutely great for gaming and movies! I can play almost anything at high settings, but sometimes it needs a few user tweaks to tone it down for better compatibility. The fact that you can adjust multiple options with cpu, battery, screen, etc also makes this noteworthy. Multimedia controls and keyboard functionality are nice features as well.

Cons: I have only noticed a few issues with this notebook. One, this notebook can get very hot! I would recommend a cooler with this notebook. Two, I have had issues with the speakers. This notebook tends to get "stuck" in headphone mode; it thinks headphones or a line-out is constantly plugged in. There really is no easy solution to this problem and its quite annoying resulting in much tech support and equipment repair/replacement. I'd look into this if you're concidering this notebook, Three, Vista. Its just too buggy I feel still.

Other Thoughts: All the usb ports are in the rear. Not a killer, but not convenient. All in all its a great laptop...when it works properly.

4 out of 5 eggsbest laptop for under 1500

Pros: fast 2.2ghz processor, 2gb of ram, perfect balance between performance/portability, 2 hour battery life, high resolution 1680x1050 15" screen, 8600m GT graphics, great support from ASUS, sturdy build quality, cool OLED screen above the keyboard and other neat things, this laptop has all the features

Cons: the screen is just about bright enough to pass, some blacklight bleeding from the bottom when the screen is totally dark, when typing on the keyboard the ends of your finger sometimes get stuck underneath keys unlike the macbook keyboard, im not sure if I have to get used to it or if this is just a con. comes with a lot of preloaded software, confusing to know what to remove, updating software is confusing even with asus live update. hard drive is somewhat loud but is this normal? its my first laptop and its very quiet so is the hard drive the loudest thing? USB ports only on the back, makes quickly wanting to hook up things more troublesome.

Other Thoughts: Vista 32-bit?

3 out of 5 eggsLong Term Report

Pros: Fast
Good battery life for the performance.
Excellent display.
Looks great.

Cons: Terrible speakers/sound now have no sound at all without using headphones, apparently a motherboard related problem that many are having.
USB port "cluster" in the rear is now officially annoying after one year of using the machine.
Case is cracking at the cooling vents.
Webcam does not swivel or tilt so you have to move the entire display to align your cam.
No hardware control for volume.

Other Thoughts: So, after using the machine for about one year, it is impressive in the speed, display and overall power but there are those things like the lack of a hardware volume control, no software to customize the vast number of hardware buttons and the terrible sound quality (when it worked) and failure of the speaker system says that I overpaid for this machine.
