5 out of 5 eggsBack from the dead.

Pros: This has now become my kids laptop, for learning and playing games.

Cons: I broke the touchpad when disassembling the laptop due to the ribbon cable being so brittle.

Other Thoughts: This computer quit working on me in 2012 so I put it in storage. I just found it last week and performed a reflow of the motherboard. Long story short... it booted right up and is working like it was before. I installed Linux Mint and it is running flawlessly. I am still using the mouse that came with it too! Still my favorite mouse. Now my kids have a computer to use so I can use the new ASUS that I replaced it with.

5 out of 5 eggs8 years old

Pros: What a machine! Bought it 8 yeas eight years ago and it is still running!

Cons: Vista was a terrible thing to do to this machine. ASUS should have set it up with XP. Vista was one of MS's worst ever operating systems. I hope someday we can all have the option of using a user friendly version of Linux and get away from the tyranny of MS OSs bad releases

Other Thoughts: Yup this review is happening now September 2015! I bought this in 2007! AND it is still relevant to this day!
Plays the "Valve" games on Steam, HALO etc. great on web surfing still and what a display compared to today's TV low rez. solutions forced on us by the "plastic box" players. We PC folks forgot how great 1920x1200 on a 17" screen looks. Lets think a bit, VHS over Beta, 4K instead of high refresh rates and better color correction. TV resolution for monitors. Trying to turn PCs into plastic toy boxes. Are we "de-evolving"?

5 out of 5 eggslong live Asus

Pros: What a Machine! This was my first laptop purchase and boy was it a good one. bought this back in 07 and it finally died on me. found that the graphics card was faulty on a lot of these, mine was good all the way through! I want to take the screen and put it on my next laptop. Its hard to find a computer as well built as this one.

Cons: I can't find replacement parts for this thing. If i could i would just replace the Motherboard and keep on trucking.

Other Thoughts: Amazing Laptop!

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic

Pros: CPU and graphiccs card are both really fast, the screen is absolutely gorgeous, i have yet to see a screen that looked as good. The laptop feels very well built, and the webcam and direct messenger screen are really nice. The included backpack is HUGE, i fit the laptop, and Xbox 360, a Wii, and all the needed cables, controllers and games in it. The DVD drive is really fast and runs quiet. The HDD is much faster than most other laptops, and also comes in two partitions so some of your data can be saved when Vista dies. Installed Ubuntu (Linux) using Wubi and Compiz Fusion works flawlessly.

Cons: Windows Vista. Had to re-install twice and use a repair disk. This current installation only has a few hiccups here and there. Other than Vista, the keyboard feels a little clakity, the ballery life is a bit low, and it does get hot.

Other Thoughts: I was kinda afraid i would be annoyed by the "glowing eye" at the touchpad, but i don't notice it now. Newegg Rocks!!!

5 out of 5 eggsSolid, Performance, Power, Quality,

Pros: Best Graphics you can touch under $3,000 and on a 17" screen. 7200rpm Hard drive (just try to find another computer with this feature), gigabit network card, Sweet Nvidia Graphics Card, Intel Core Duo 2.4ghz!! Two year warranty with one year of accident protection/replacement!
Need I say more?

Cons: Speakers are not very loud. Add on speakers/headphones.
Memory 2gb. For Vista you will need 4gb before you know it. I bought 4gb of 800mhz memory here with rebates for $69.99 look for 'GeIL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 800'.
Vista sucks.. I installed Ubuntu (Linux), side by side with Vista as an alternative, then the next time Vista booted up, Vista overwrote a portion of the boot sector on the disc. We had to reinstall Ubuntu, but now it is a straight Ubuntu 64bit computer, and we couldn't be happier with the machine. Everything works great.

Other Thoughts: We first purchased an HP from a local retailer, then after seeing how cheap those laptops are being made, we traded for a Toshiba.. Also very disappointed. Got the full refund on those, did some research found this beauty.

I was originally concerned by comments of the power cord on the right side. Don't worry, it is formed into a 90 angle and fits close to the side of the laptop. I was also worried about the orange appearance and lights not being professional. This machine is a top performer and the laptop is very professional (lights & eye are able to shut off with button).
Also concerned with it getting too hot. Not a problem, but I do recommend following another piece of advice in these comments. Buy the ZM-NC 1000 Zalman notebook cooler to keep your notebook ice cold and give a nice working platform.
This computer will out-perform many top of the line desktops!

5 out of 5 eggsWOW

Pros: Looks awesome, plays COD4 and CSS at max settings. The graphics look amazing in full HD. I'm pretty sure it would play Crysis with medium settings too, not sure about high settings though. I don't like the game so I haven't actually tried it. Performance with this laptop really is SUPPER.

Cons: are you kidding. Cons are for, well not this laptop that's for sure. Wait, yeah I do actually have one, but it's not for the laptop... It comes with Vista on it. Vista blows so get rid of that and put XP on it and you'll be flying! Drivers are not easy to find though so make sure you find those before you purchase the laptop. Go to the asus forums and search for the drivers, you will find one forum that has all the drivers you'll need. Even has the extra programs... you'll know what I mean when you get there.

Other Thoughts: As mentioned in the cons, switch to XP and you will be flying. I ran all of those games on XP so don't think your going to get that kind of performance with Vista. Backpack is bigger than you think, however it is really a great bag. Seems to be very strong material. I use it all the time and it has a lot of great padding so the laptop isn't damaged. The mouse that comes with it is also a really good mouse. It's not top of the line razer or Logitec mouse or anything but it's a good gaming mouse none the less. BTW, it is a logitec mouse.

1 out of 5 eggsFaulty audio jack

Pros: Many.

Cons: This model seems to have a defective headphone jack: After some usage the jack gets stuck in the connected position and the external speakers stop working: The notebook permanently detects the headphones as connected (even if they are not) and the external speakers are disabled.

I'm RMAing my notebook to ASUS, but a number of users report that, following motherboard replacement, the problem reappears after some time. I hope ASUS is going to solve this, because an small hardware problem is ruining this otherwise great laptop.

5 out of 5 eggsWOW!!

Pros: Great desktop replacement. Amazing screen!

Cons: Battery life!! But then again it was expected!

Other Thoughts: Num pad would have been ideal. Also it is HUGE....but it is a desktop replacement with a 17" monitor...

1 out of 5 eggsFigured out Issue with G2 video

Pros: As noted before

Cons: ASUS and I finally diagnosed the issue with the video card. All of a sudden users started complaining about artifacts on their forums. Comes to be that with Vista SP1's rewrite of Superfetch, it causes the memory to be used more often and rewritten to 100%. This causes HUGE overheating issues for the memory, and since the memory is on top of the video card it overheats both and makes the system instable or causes artifacts.

Solution: This machine is not compatable with VISTA SP1's superfetch(which sucks because its one of the few great features)

Other Thoughts: Windows XP64, here I come. I wish I knew about this incapability, I would of chosen a different model from NewEgg. Too bad my 30 days is up. Going to try for a manafacturer refund due to false advertising of 100% vista compatability.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome

Pros: Wicked fast. Great connectivity. I bought this laptop because my desktop is beginning to show signs of major hardware failure and I decided to replace it with a laptop. I was pleasantly surprised at how beautiful the display is, and believe me, it is absolutely stunning. The OLED screen is a neat feature, adds to the cool factor (or maybe it adds to the geek factor, either way I like it). eSATA is extremely useful and this thing has more than enough USB ports. The HDMI is a welcomed feature, although I'll rarely use it. The camera and related app provides at least a few minutes of fun. I think I'll have a hard time putting a real load on this computer.

Cons: The second RAM slot is under the keyboard making it a little tricky to upgrade the RAM. It's really a non-issue.

Other Thoughts: Everyone that has seen this computer (family friends) are jealous. In fact, one friend of mine decided to buy this laptop after seeing mine. Very, very worth the money.
